Johnny Cash - Who's Gene Autry? Lyrics

Whoopi tai ai oh, rockin' to and fro
Back in the saddle again

My little boy said, "Daddy, who's Gene Autry?"
His old movie was comin' on TV
And I said, "Let me tell you about him, son"
And I took him upon my knee

"Why, when I was a little boy about your size
And just about every Saturday night
When I could scrape up a dime for the movies
And when my Daddy said alright"

"I'd be right downtown at the picture show
Like everybody else that could
To see a handsome man
On a big fine stallion goin' about, doin' good"

Singin', "Whoopi tai ai oh, rockin' to and fro
Put him back in the saddle again
Whoopi tai ai yeh, let him go on his way
Back in the saddle again"

"Well, he could ride his horse and play his guitar
And sing all at the same time
And I was ridin' right along there beside him
On that broomstick pony of mine"

"And you know his pistol never ran out of bullets
When the bad guys had to be stopped
And somehow his bullets never drew any blood
But the bad guys dropped when he shot"

"Yeah, old Gene was an image of justice
And goodness and purity
And in the eyes of a poor, little country boy
He made the world look better to me"

Singin', "Whoopi tai ai oh, rockin' to and fro
Put him back in the saddle again
Whoopi tai ai yeh, let him go on his way
Back in the saddle again"

"And you know the way
He rescued the rancher's daughter
He'd sent a thrill right up the aisle
And the endin' would always send us home
With a good victorious smile"

"Now you ask me, 'Who's Gene Autry?'
Well, son, go ahead and watch the show
And then ride off into the sunset with him
Like I did forty years ago"

Singin', "Whoopi tai ai oh, rockin' to and fro
Put him back in the saddle again
Whoopi tai ai yeh, let him go on his way
Back in the saddle again"

He's from a very small Texas town called Tioga. I place I gladly call home. We've got a sign up by the main road which reads "welcome to the birth place of Gene Autry"

  4. R.... G....

Yappy ti i a the good old days Gene Autry, Roy Roger's and Wild Bill Hickok every Saturday matinee at the local theaters for a 25 cents you got 2 movies a sreal and three cartoons, Mighty Mouse, Tom and Gery, Sylvester and Tweety Bird. The good old days all gone now all you get on TV now is garbage. Same with the Netflix movies all garbage. Just murder and thensome. Good that YouTube shows the past.

Although I went straight to Rock & Roll once I taught myself to play, Marty Robbins, Porter Wagoner, Buck Owens, Roy Clark, the "Ragin' Cajun" Doug Kershaw and, most especially, the Man in Black, Johnny Cash all were a tremendous influence on me. All were consummate showmen and professionals in every sense of the word. Mr. Cash embraced new music for what it was, a natural evolutionary outgrowth of what had come before and an expression of music seen through eyes of a new generation. I often wish that my aunt had kept track of Johnny's comedy album. "A Boy Named Sue" isn't the only funny song he did, just the most well known. "I'm Being Eaten By A Boa Constrictor" is a good example of a man who wouldn't let fame & success cost him the ability to have a good laugh.

Thank You for posting this. Somehow, this one had never come to my attention.

Get punched in the face, rolled down a steep cliff and get back up with your hat still on your head.

    H.... M....

Believe it or not, that was from the movie The Old Corral, and the man who got tossed over the cliff was Roy Rogers before he was a big deal himself!!!

  13. J.... A....

This is what you would call "Wholesome American Propaganda".

  14. J.... A....

Those kind of Saturday morning western always left me cold. Lonesome Dove is one western I truly liked.

I watch things like this and it makes me think I"m so glad that I lived in the era which I have. I can look back at these videos from the 50s, or 30s, or the silents, and I can read and learn about what people knew and did during the centuries before me. I learn about how life was in biblical times, or the ancient Egyptians, or can even learn about times before men existed. I'm sure after I'm gone there will be things that would be wonderful to see, but not too much. Maybe some medical advances or space travel, but that's it. We have phones that can fit in my pocket and cars that drive themselves, so how much more advancement do we really need? In the future, the bad things that are happening will probably out-weigh the good, so my era may have been the best to be alive. All the great stars from my day are passing on, and I'm not interested in the new ones that come out, so screw it.

  16. T.... H....

Two absolute Legends . Thanks for sharing .

  17. A.... ....

My mom and dad love his movies. Greetings from México.

  18. b.... w....

I love Gene Autry always brings a good memory...

  19. E.... L....

    love gene

He was one of the great examples of what a good man should be. During the Second World War he gave up his multi-million dollar career in Hollywood and became a Sergeant in the Air Force risking his life flying supplies into the war zones for our troops to defend our freedom. He is one of the few people known to have been a 33 Degree Freemason. A man of great virtue with the respect of nearly everybody who knew him.

  20. M.... A....

this is very educational on my part as a musical historian,,, the music in my grandma's days , oh, my first time to hear this song, so beautiful!

    M.... A....

Gene also is known for "Here Comes Santa Claus" and "Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer." among his many classic songs.

  21. L.... S....

    thanks for share.

  22. b.... ....

So Sad, mostly all gone, including Johnny....

    b.... ....

Gene is I believe the only person ever to achieve five stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His songs are still sung, His films and television shows are still watched today. Millions of people like Johnny Cash have taken bits and pieces of who Gene was into their hearts for almost a century now. Gone is a very narrow somewhat over-simplistic way to describe people like Gene or Johnny who were larger in life than merely the mortal flesh they resided in.

    b.... ....

not gone, just not here =)

  23. D.... L....

These were the days when kids could watch something on television without being mentally traumatized with murders and violence and wondering if their grandmother is a serial killer.

    D.... L....

    so true

  24. B.... E....

    Noone was ever greater

    B.... E....

Personally, although I really liked Gene, I never cared much for Noone.

  25. C.... D....

When i watch any western movie anymore about Gene Autry i cry... My grandfather was an Autry fan and i think his father was too as my papaws middle name was Autry... He died two years ago to cancer... But this was the best way to spend time with him, watching Gene Autry movies.

    C.... D....

One of my former bishops was related to Gene Autry.

    C.... D....

Crystal Biddle .. This comment hit me hard, as I was raised by my grandparents and was so close to my grandpa. We spent many days watching old westerns whether it be Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Lone Ranger, etc. He passed 10 years ago though, but he left an indelible impression in my life.

    C.... D....

    I'm sorry for your loss.

    C.... D....

Crystal Biddle- watching this because I just lost my grandpa too, but he loved the Lone Ranger. Said he hated those goddamn singing cowboys haha.

  26. G.... P....

    Gene Autry is my cousin!!

    G.... P....

Also one of my former bishops was a distant cousin of Gene Autry.

    G.... P....

my dog is a cousin of his too

    G.... P....

Gene Autry is a distant relative of mine too. My close relatives don't seem to know much about him, not even sure if he's related by blood or marriage, so I've been searching YouTube and other places trying to learn about who he was.

    G.... P....

    Gene Autry is my uncle

  27. A.... W....

A marque announced that the movie the were showing was a Gene Autry movie. Later the movie theater received a call from Gene and he said, "I can't stop you from showing my movie but I will sue you if you don't remove my name from your marque". The movie was part of the public domain but his name was not part of the deal.

    A.... W....

This surprises me.  There must have been some legal fine point involved.  Because, I know for a fact that this man was the real thing, no pretender to The White Hat.  in 1973, I found myself in LA and ran into him.  Being a callow youth, I proceeded to totally geek out, telling him stories about the records of his that I'd gotten for Christmas, when I was 5, and seeing 'Phantom Empire' for the first time, at a Texas comicon, two years before.  He hadn't been on the screen in more than 15 years, was rich beyond belief and would have paid no price for giving me the finger.  But, friends, he acted as if it were 1935 and I was the first pimply faced yokel to ever walk up and ask to shake his hand.  Gene from the Screen.  Via con Dios, Mi Amigo.

    A.... W....

you know his foundation's site sells all his stuff remastered on DVD's - including FULL phantom menace series.

    A.... W....

That is right! He retained all his publishing and rights to his films as much as he could. Amazing business man!

    A.... W....

Many years ago (1969), I was attending a recognition dinner for Orange County, California Eagle Scouts at Knott's Berry Farm. We were all wearing our uniforms, and, when it was over and I was walking to my car, I noticed an elderly woman unsuccessfully trying to parallel-park a new, white Lincoln Continental in the "VIP PARKING" area. After watching her for a minute or so, I walked up to her window and asked if she needed some help. She replied, "Oh, yes, young man!" and slid over so that I could drive the car (Must have been the uniform!).

Well, I parked the car, and she thanked me profusely. As I got out of the car, a fairly large man, whom I thought I recognized -- but couldn't "place" -- briskly walked up and asked, "What's going on here?" I explained what had happened, and, after looking at the lady for confirmation of my story, he said, "Well, thank you, young fella!" As I walked away, I looked back and saw that the license plate (California) was "KMPC1", KMPC being, of course, the callsign of one of the most popular radio stations in Southern California (the world?) at the time. I suddenly realized who the "big fella" was, knowing that Gene Autry owned the station. I, too, would probably have "geeked out" if I had made the connection a few seconds sooner.

    Ah, memories...

  28. j.... ....

What are the title to all the films in this video?

  29. g.... e....

Gene Autry was the very 1st concert I ever attended. I even got an autographed album from him:0) I still have it cover and all and it still doesn't skip!!!

  30. S.... ....

Thank you... My daddy really enjoyed this... We shared a "moment" together.. :) he is 70

  31. t.... ....

I must admit I laughed when I saw the scene where Gene jumps from one car to another in pursuit of a bad guy. Possibly one of the easiest stunts if you could call it that! Excellent song by Johnny Cash as well as the neat way you linked all the footage together. Well done.

  32. P.... ....

2:32 Those hats surely were glued to their skulls.....;']

  33. T.... H....

I also need to change my name. Sir Hunter doesn't sound to right.

  34. T.... H....

Gene Autry is my cousin and my best-friend's Aunt dated Elvis..a bunch a girls probably did haha.

  35. c.... ....

Sir Hunter - It isn`t clear who your cousin is Gene Autry or Juhnny Cash? Since both are heroes, congratulations to you. Also for serving in the US Marines. I severed with the Army in Korea.

  36. T.... H....

    That's my cousin (:

  37. c.... ....

He was my first movie heroe. I was four years old in 1949 when I saw that first movie in New york City. I thought that all cowboys rode horses and sang songs. I am still impressed by Gene Autry in 2012.

  38. c.... ....

1n the 1930's in our small town in the U K we had Cowboy Matinees on Saturday mornings All the greats Tom Mix -Ken Maynard-Buck Rodgers you name 'em we had'em

  39. 3.... ....

A great American sings about another great American in this song video. You know, I can understand that a lot of younger people may not know who Gene Autry was, cause heck those great days were a long time before their time. But, I will never understand, and it makes me really angry, when they don't give a damn and would rather watch the crap put out on television and the big screen today ... thinking it's great stuff. It's a sad world today. Now, I know why they called 'em the "good old days".

  40. D.... S....

the best Cash song I had never heard until now....

  41. R.... D....

    love this song

  42. M.... N....

This song was used in a documentary on Gene Autry. They showed kids coming to a Saturday afternoon movie in the back of a pickup truck. Of course, it was staged, but it did show how Autry's films were big at neighborhood theaters in the South and rural areas. They would run a Roy Rogers-Gene Autry double feature in my town and the line stretched for miles.

  43. L.... ....

I always thought ‘B’ films were superior to ‘A’ films, and yet you hardly ever see one released in the cinemas today. Nothing ever equaled 'B' Westerns.

  44. J.... ....

Where are these type of men now? Gene, Roy, Clayton Moore-aka Lone Ranger, Charles Starett-aka Darango Kid, Smiley Burnett-aka Frog Millhouse, George Gabby Hayes, to name a few. These men although not perfect did portray good moral values and in Clayton Moore's case even carried them off screen. Not to say others didn't just listed him as an example.

  45. J.... ....

    @zipper179 Amen bud!

  46. J.... P....

My dad used to watch Gene when he was a kid, and when they started showing them on TV a while ago, he used to watch them all the time. I'd sit with him and watch whatever he was watching. I asked him what he was watching and he said Gene Autry. I then asked him 'Who is Gene Autry?" He told me, and then he'd tell me about how he used to watch it when he was a kid. He died almost a year ago, and I only discovered this song very recently and it made me smile.

  47. J.... ....

A great song for a great hero, Gene Autry.
