I am not a big Johnny Cash fan, but I like this one a lot. This is the only Johnny Cash song I cannot stop listening to. (I am more into hard rock and metal.) I must admit, country music sounds better in German for some reason.

No, Johnny Cash had in fact mostly scottish / irish ancestors...the reason why he sings in german is probably because when he was young and served in the army, he was stationed in.......GERMANY!! Yes, he spent about 1 or 2 years in my home country. It's also the place where he began to write many of his now well-known songs.

If I think about the original lyrics of "walk the line" this song has nothing to do with a possible german translation of the original song, right? It´s just the same melody.

It has similar sentiment or mood, but you're right that they aren't translation of one another. The English one he has already found June and so he has found his way; the German version despite being hopeful, he was still searching for something that will help him find and stay within "the line".

I wonder what the deal with Germany is/was... I just mean, I've heard the Beatles, Johnny Cash and Elvis sing songs in German (for a German audience, mind you), and even saw a Monty Python episode in German (again, for Germans). But I've never run into them singing for the French, or Spanish... Was Germany a much bigger market? Or did Germans like English and American music better than other countries did?

well, german pronunciation seems a bit more close to english pronunciation than french or spanish; therefore, the rhymes and rhythms of the two languages are naturally closer than trying to match with a romance language. German language also seems more masculine, and maybe mainstream supported that. Germany has always been big in media too, with broadcasting technologies, television, etc. But Johnny Cash had to serve in the military in Germany and his first band was even there, so it made sense that he would want to sing in German. :) I don't know about others, maybe they were just copying him ;) (jk)
