Johnny Cash - The Evening Train Lyrics

I heard the laughter at the depot
But my tears fell like the rain
When I saw them place that long white casket
In the baggage coach of the evening train

The baby's eyes are red from weeping
Its little heart is filled with pain
Oh Daddy cried they're taking Mama
Away from us on the evening train

As I turned to walk away from the depot
It seemed I heard her call my name
Take care of my baby and tell him darling
That I'm going home on the evening train

I pray that God will give me courage
To carry on 'til we meet again
It's hard to know she's gone forever
They're carrying her home on the evening train

Johnny cash was like a fine wine , he just got better and better with age. I think yu could hear his life story in his voice . His ability to pass on the raw emotion of life through lyrics, and music, with empathy and compassion is a mesure of his greatness. Without doubt Johnny and merle haggard , the best.

  9. J.... K....

one of the most haunting and beautiful songs ive ever heard

No one can sing a song like Johnny cash. Just great. Love his music. Music for the soul. This song makes me think of my late mother and cry. Miss her so much.

There's few men that can pull your heart out of your chest and cover it with tears but John R Cash was one of those

  12. D.... ....

I love this song. The fact that you can hear the pain in John's voice and in his heart makes this one of the most special recordings of his entire career.
I personally find it hard to hold back tears when you can hear how hard he's fighting just to get the words out. I think this was his final tribute to June after she passed

I was never a country music artist, but I love Johnny Cash songs. Too me he had the most soulful songs. This is another great one. And another thing I love is I can pick up my acoustic, and play along, and be part of the band while listening. RIP Mr. Cash.

  19. K.... T....

This is one of my favorite Johnny Cash songs. It has such raw emotion and sadness. There will be another singer as great as Johnny Cash!!!!!!! Rest In Peace Johnny.

This is the most beautiful saddest song ever. We lost my girlfriend's best friends mother yesterday, she was a single mother of 4 and had been sick a long time and to watch the funeral home take her away, this song came to mind. Thanks Johnny, we miss you and June!

  21. B.... P....

This is an old Hank Williams tune

    B.... P....

Not just a Hank song, but Hank AND wife Audrey Williams. The only song to their co-credit, as far as I know

May your Mom Be in the arms of Jesus!

  26. I.... ....

I loved every song off of this album, but this is my favorite. So mournful. I appreciated the fact that you can hear his gasps and at times discomfort as he created this music and it wasn't cleaned up or covered in any way. He was a true artist and this album was the greatest he ever did in my opinion.

  27. j.... m....

this song always reminds me of my nans funeral...was a day tht was emotional, but will always stick with me, an even though its a sombre one it does remind me of happier times r.i.p nan
