Johnny Cash - I've Got A Thing About Trains Lyrics
Train train train I've got a thing about trains
I get a sad kind of feeling when I see a passenger train
In this fast movin' world that we live in nobody rides 'em much these days
Maybe I'm a little sentimental cause I know that things have to change
But I'd still like to go for a train ride cause I've got a thing about trains
Train train train you're fading from the scene
But you've had your days of glory train train train
Train they say you're too slow for travelin' but I'm gonna miss you some day
When my little boy says daddy what was it like to ride a train
I'll just say it was a good way to travel when things didn't move quite so fast
And I'm sorry son that you can't ride one the trains are the thing of the past
Train train train you're fading from the scene
And I'm gonna mourn your passing train train train

Johnny Cash I've Got A Thing About Trains Comments
Johnny cash, im sure, would be happy with Union pacific bringing back 4014
I almost got fooled that this was going to be Country Roads when the song started lol.
I played hooky to watch trains.
To quote some words of wisdom from former Vice President Joe Biden: "AMTRAK!"
Roses are Red
Violets are Blue
I like trains
and Mr. Cash does too
only if johnny could see what trains are now like UP4014
Ah~ just for my rank 10 needs.
Rode a train from Denver to Reno. Unforgettable experience over the Rocky Mountains and through Glenwood Canyon. The desert skies and sunsets. The stops along the way in small town America. Everyone should take a train ride. There's nothing like a train.
sadly I've never ridden one
I cant help it, the US Army MADE me this way :)
"I got a THING about trains!"
For six years,....I rod'em all OVER Germany

I first heard the song I’ve got a thing about trains 48 years ago when Radio Station WDEL in Wilmington, Delaware played the song in March of 1970. In 1971 on May 1,1971 Amtrak came into being and it will be 47 years this May 1st. That Amtrak has been in existence. I travel long distance on Amtrak and when I’m home in the San Diego area for visits up to a week, I ride to & from Los Angeles & Oxnard on Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliners alternating my visits between the 2 cities. I enjoy & love train travel very much, it’s much better than the bus, flying is a hassle & a drudgery. Many of the nations interstate highways in most of he urban/suburban metro areas are now parking lots where people will drive slow on them for the sake of driving slow on purpose where there are no construction zones, no accidents & in nice dry weather.

Trains are not a thing of the past in Europe. 200 kph there.
Dumbass...
How easy the past is forgotten.
May the steam trains stay on the rails forever.
We'll keep 'em. They're still of use and love.
And Stephenson knows they deserve it.
This is my kinda song. I've got a thing about trains 🚂🚃🚃🚃
evan may i hear buddy
This song bring back good memories I still have the original lp
The Johnny Cash song I’ve go a thing about trains was played on many radio stations when the song came out in March,1970, May 1,1971 Amtrak came into being. The Boeing 747 is almost a thing of the past, the McDonnel-Douglas DC-10 & MD-11 which is a DC-11 & the Lockheed L-1011 Tristar don’t fly anymore. When I travel in Southern California between San Diego,Los Angeles & Oxnard,CA-alternating my visits between the 2 cities, I travel on the Pacific Surfliners and the very same Interstate highways that killed off many passenger trains are the same highways that are bringing the trains back in many urban areas. I also travel long distance on Amtrak. The train is the way to travel.
So glad Cash was wrong about trains...I know he would be as well
Trains are still around. But all the great passenger trains of the past are gone along with most of the beautiful stations from back then.
Johnny cash I walk the line
: Sure wish he had been wrong about Amtrak's Desert Wind (esp. L.A. to Las Vegas), 1979-1997, RIP.
Me too:)
I love it's song in R.I.P I hope you rest in haven we all love you we all miss you.
I've got a thing about the 611
Memories Forever the Norfolk & Western railroads streamlined steam engine number 611 4-8-4 which was built by the Norfolk & Western in their shops in Roanoke, VA along with the Lima built GS-4 Southern Pacific Daylight number X4449 and the Alco built 4-6-4 streamlined Super Hudson that pulled the Empire State Express on the New York Central were the most beautiful streamlined steam engines of all time. Two of those 3 I mentioned still run excursions.
Im picking up one Friday evening
Johnny cash
Freight and passenger trains are alive and well and always will be:)
Yeah but modern diesel-electrics are boring compared to steams..:)
Sacramento Amtrak station is just 2 miles from my apartment. I drive past it every single morning on my way to work and admire how old and historical it is, and yes, I listen to Johnny and imagine him being there during his performance at Folsom.
Terje Tangen
Evan May Nice looking train station there. I can always appreciate a beautiful historic building. Thank you for pointing it out, first time I've ever seen pictures of Sacramento (from a guy who's seen every state east of the Mississippi, and lived out of the country for almost 15 years)
in Europe Freight is actually near max capacity and they are building more tracks to get the freight away from the passenger tracks.
@Thungsten Kid, not all! In Switzerland they have very modern steam engines and currently planning on future trains riding on bio ethanol from sugar plants.
http://www.dlm-ag.ch/
There is a future for this. And if the Swiss do something, they do it right!
I've got a thing 'bout Narrow Gauge trains- steamers, to be certain. Peep-peeeep!!
trains seem way safer than air-fair...
Miranda Lambert
@Rigamorte just shut up
@Rigamorte flying sucks so much
@Rigamorte my vacotion almost got canceled because of air planes they are realy not efishent at all and they are way more dangeruos than trains
@Banana Bug i would probly chose then stupid engineer than a pilot because planes when they crash you would most likely die and trains are made of strong steel
i vote for pro-trains!!!!!
Cody Buckler very good, I also vote the same, I love train travel, always will, I travel long distance by Amtrak trains & in the future when I'm in the San Diego area, I will be riding on the Pacific Surfliners between San Diego, Los Angeles & Oxnard, CA more often.
@Christopher O'Rourke nice one on you comrade
I got a thing about trains, too! My thing is model trains- Marklin HO scale. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE real trains.
The Susquehanna RR has a single track line that runs through my town here in northern NJ & is 1 block from my home. There are 2 grade crossings, & I when I was young (over 50 yrs ago), my grandmother & I would walk up to the tracks & I would wave to the engineer of a 1-car passenger train as he passed by. Most times, he gave me a little 'boop-boop' on the whistle of his grey RS-1. HE made my day!! Now, only freight trains roll through, & I suppose the engineer figures that if HE is up at 3:30 or 4:00AM, everyone else should be too. Still love them trains :-))
SUSQUEHANNA?!?!??! DON'T MENTION THAT NAME TO ME EVER.
(It's a joke, look up Abbot and Costello Susquehanna hat company :) )
And yeah, trains are cool :)
LOVE THE OLD TRAIN
If we dident have these damn airports n shit we would still be riding trains. Thanks evolution. ;-;
Clare The Xenomorph so true
Not only that, back then the U.S. govt. taxed the h--- out of the railroads and used that money to subsidize the railroad's competitors!
Ander Lander yep , “ damn “ airports is a “ modern man “. I Don’t think he nee worry airports are here to stay ; shit is also here to stay.
But taking Amtrak from Boston to Dublin is not really an option.
this is the shisniz
And then in 1977 along came the double stack trains. Also the Staggers Act which deregulated the railroads so they could compete with other forms of transportation.
"Maybe I am a little sentimental, but I know that things have to change"..........................Remembering those long horns I run out of the shop to view that long train counting how many rail vehicles it has 21......22......23........24...........oh finished..........Bye bye Mr Train Engineer
9 dislikes came from CSX
@CNSD75I probably from Hunter Harrison
@CSX EMD RAILFAN Yeah no.
Erich Diebold sound much more like anti passenger train Arizona to me. I travel by Amtrak when I travel long distance.
Chicken Shit Express. Been a railfan and worker for 35 years. Bring back Conrail and bring back the memories!
CSX don’t hate steam locos they just don’t see the point in making them.
I say nothing beats the old steamers, Sure these modern things are faster and stronger but nothing compares to hearing and feeling the steady beat of pistons and a blast from the whistle.
@Charles Grimes Oh, they're still around... I promise.
brandos451 ,,, they were designed to last a hundred years for they had to be over hauled ( steam was really perfected it was very efficient at the end of the steam train era
@Will Millington No.
Honestly, steam is more powerful. Maybe not as fast but could definitely haul a darn lot. Look at all the diesels it takes to pull a 100 car train, and it would take one steam locomotive
@jax c That's actually not true at all. Research tractive effort...
...BUT I STILL LIKE TO GO FOR A TRAIN RIDE...
Love this.
I GOT A THING ABOUT TRAINS
!
My daughter drives a train. "When my little boy says, "Mommy, what was it like to drive a train." :)
GREAT!Always Johnny Cash is my idol
ding..ding..ding...Cash $...ding..ding..ding..i like my singer job $..ding..ding..ding ....
Me too - I've got a thing about Johnny Cash. A very special person.
Me too. My mother's worried about me because I listen to him A LOT!
sad song! My Grandpa used to work for the railroad. He died on The City Of San Francisco. I love aviation, but it would be cool to have planes AND trains.
Me too! ;)
I've got a thing about Cash
The I Like Trains Kid's theme song.
thanks for sharing looks and sound fantastic
I travel by Amtrak when I travel long distance, it's a great way to travel, see the country, and my days of flying are finished except when it's a trans Pacific flight to Hawaii. the Philippines, Singapore, and Japan. I rode on Amtraks Sunset Limited, Crescent, Cardinal and Texas Eagle trains last September & October when I went to my 40 year high school class reunion in Newark, Delaware. Passenger trains are needed between Scranton,PA & Philadelphia,New York,Washington and Buffalo.
The man who works on the General was down in the firebox replacing fire bricks when he heard a noise in the cab. "Who's up there?" he yelled. Came back a deep voice, "Johnny Cash." He died only seven years after commuter rail passenger counts began to rise in 1996.
mine too!
my 2 favorite things johnny cash & train
Good song, made me think a bit about history. Now there are Bullet Trains and Light Rail, and the concord came and went. And the train is alive again.
Iv'e got a thing about trains too. But its not the same as Cash.
2 dislikes?!?!?, Oh you stupid LADY GAGA!!!!!!!
just about every single thing you touch or use in your daily life, whether you wear it, drive it, or eat it has been on a Train. Trains didn't get old, they got Better!
I would give it a dislike, because trains today, are kicking ASS!!! Steam trains are more of a thing in the past including the roads we all new. still good song.
Theres 2 dislikes they must have never heard a steam loco chuggin or a diesel in notch 8
i can remember clearly the old steam engine trains that came to Huntingburg, IN. in the 60's and 70's from the Southern Railway. Trains played a big role in our cities economy at one time. just watch the old Huntingburg Video posted on this site. the railway is still a major artery but instead moves Toyota parts and cars.
This song really touched me hard when I think about ground transportation in North America. All the passenger train services that once existed such as the Canadian Pacific and other small train companies have all vanished. Via Rail and Amtrak have all the monopoly for expensive passenger train service. Plus there is no 300 km/h high speed rail in US or Canada. You want to get that service, come here to Japan, or go to Europe, Korea, Taiwan, and China.
I clicked on this because I like Johnny Cash and also.....I kind of have a thing for trains too.
big train fan
GEEZ! ~ I can feel the "clickity-clack" beneath my feet. I used to be a switchman/trainman on the "P-Company". Way back when!
Still love trains and their wondeful melodies....

I was 6 years old in 1970 and I got this record for Christmas that year, thanks for posting this Rob.
