Johnny Cash - Down There By The Train Lyrics

There's a place I know where the train goes slow
Where the sinner can be washed in the blood of the lamb
There's a river by the trestle down by sinner's grove
Down where the willow and the dogwood grow

You can hear the whistle, you can hear the bell
From the halls of heaven to the gates of hell
And there's room for the forsaken if you're there on time
You'll be washed of all your sins and all of your crimes
If you're down there by the train
Down there by the train
Down there by the train
Down there by the train
Down there where the train goes slow

There's a golden moon that shines up through the mist
And I know that your name can be on that list
There's no eye for an eye, there's no tooth for a tooth
I saw Judas Iscariot carrying John Wilkes Booth
He was down there by the train
Down there by the train
Down there by the train
Down there by the train
He was down there where the train goes slow

If you've lost all your hope, if you've lost all your faith
I know you can be cared for and I know you can be safe
And all the shamefuls and all of the whores
And even the soldier who pierced the side of the Lord
Is down there by the train
Down there by the train
Down there by the train
Down there by the train
Down there where the train goes slow

Well, I've never asked forgiveness and I've never said a prayer
Never given of myself, never truly cared
I've left the ones who loved me and I'm still raising
Cain I've taken the low road and if you've done the same
Meet me down there by the train
Down there by the train
Down there by the train
Down there by the train
Down there where the train goes slow

Meet me down there by the train
Down there by the train
Down there by the train
Down there by the train
Down there where the train goes slow

Johnny Cash Down There By The Train Comments
  1. C.... S....

What's cool is the reason Cash ended up recording the cover in the first place was cause Tom was asked if there were any of his tunes he'd love to send Johnny's way for an upcoming album where he would cover the material of others. Tom'd initially written it for John Hammond, who never ended up recording it. He figured if anyone was more fit for the material, it'd be Cash for sure.

    Cash is king, full stop.

  3. a.... ....

I am a huge fan of both... this is just christmas morning for a guy like me... often listen to one followed by the other

  4. M.... ....

Cannot beat Tom Waits singing this. Plus he cuts out such a great part. I like Johnny Cash but this song was made for Tom's heartbreaking voice and piano.

    M.... ....

Cash cuts out a great part.

    Also try this: -> www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHfjKjIfZQw (ca. 3 Minutes) ;-)

  6. S.... C....

This song had me choking on sobs , it was used at the ending of the film Miral

  7. W.... L....

you can't really beat Waits on most of his songs. but this is a good cover anyway!

  8. T.... T....

Both Cash and Waits did great. But it's almost impossible for artists to outshine Tom in his own songs

    T.... T....

    Who's Tom?

    T.... T....

@Guts Tom Waits. He wrote this song.

  9. m.... ....

Choosing between the Cash and Waits versions is like picking between a white church and a black church.

    m.... ....

the songs are always better in a black church but the lord is at both

  10. N.... R....

Huge fan of cash. Was unaware Waits wrote this. Should have know. Cash sure does it justice but Tom kills it.

  11. A.... C....

    Waits version is better no?

    A.... C....

    Yep. Tom gives it soul.

  12. D.... B....

Love Johnny Cash but there's no engineer and no conductor on the train. It's just another sleazy hustle.

  13. W.... D....

Combine Johnny Cash and Tom Waits and you get some of most magnificent music ever recorded. I would buy the first American album for this song alone even if I had to pay $100 for it.

  14. M.... ....

    Tom waits

I've spent most of my life contemplating which is the quintessential Johnny Cash song, combining his singing, songwriting and core message, and after considering many others over the years, I think this is it. Here's the man who evangelized with Billy Graham and spoke for a nation confessing utter weakness and selfishness, saved only by a faith in God's forgiveness. He says, "meet me" by the train. Brings tears to my eyes every time.

+MagusMirificus You, sir, are both a true philosopher and a true decent human being. Not to mention a man who I would look up to and wish to speak to in times of darkness and doubt. All the best to you always my friend. The world could use millions more people like yourself.

+William Doyle Wow, thanks. If my internet comments made me seem that interesting, I don't know what my songs would do.

    Allan Classen amen

yes, both versions are fucking amazing. . I have a slight preference for Waits version but I ain't fast forwarding this one any day of the week.
of course I might be biased toward Waits since he took my soul and gave it back to me in verse.

    A.... C....

Tom Waits DID write it but he specifically wrote it for Johnny Cash, in tribute and homage to his unparalleled influence on American music.

i saw him once in uk. was given a ticket had to rush to theater after work. a front row middle fantastical seat. the curtain drew up and he was standing right in front of me, all dressed in black. without even drawing breath, he said, "I'm Johnny Cash" and i nearly fell off my seat at the awesome power of that voice. he launched immediately into the first song. i feel so fortunate to have seen the man in black up so close. johnny cash you will rock my heart forever.

  24. r.... ....

Just an incredible song. This is a song about the God I want to believe in - a God that loves us all, no matter how many times we slip and fall.

  25. I.... O....

this is not true just too good

  26. I.... ....

I saw Cash twice. Once with June Carter at the Tennessee Theatre, and his last show ever at the Carter Family Fold. I'll forget either performance. The only time I ever prayed was when June fell sick and Johnny asked for prayers for her. I haven't ever prayed again.

  27. L.... N....
