Johnny Cash - Can't Help But Wonder Where I'm Bound Lyrics

It's a long and dusty road, It's a hot and a heavy load
and the folks I meet ain't always kind
Some are bad and some are good
Some have done the best they could
Some have tried to ease my troubled mind

And I can't help but wonder
Where I'm bound, where I'm bound
Can't help but wonder where I'm bound

I've been wanderin' through this land just a-doin' the best I can
Tryin' to find what I was meant to do
And the people that I see look as worried as can be
And it looks like they are wonderin' too (To Chorus)

We, I had a little girl one time, she had lips like sherry wine
And she loved me till my head went plumb insane
But I was too blind to see she was driftin' away from me
And my good gal went off on the morning train (To Chorus)

If you see me passing by and you sit and you wonder why
and you wish that you were rambling too
Nail your shoes to the kitchen floor, lace 'em up and bar the door
Thank your stars for the roof that's over you

And I can't help but wonder
Where I'm bound, where I'm bound
Can't help but wonder where I'm bound

Johnny Cash Can't Help But Wonder Where I'm Bound Comments
  1. B.... ....

I believe in many ways I like this version of Johnny Cash as much as I liked the original. Older, care-warn, experienced with a voice that that carries the conviction of knowing what he's singing is true.

  2. v.... ....

    Truly a great singer..RIP Johnny...you were a one in a million..

  4. K.... ....

This song is how I think John Marston is feeling at the the end of Red Dead Redemption 2.

  5. F.... K....

The lyric that sticks with me the most is "I'm just wandering threw this land doing the best I can. Trying to find what I was meant to do" because in the end everyone can say that

  6. B.... F....

Dion dimucci did an absolutely amazing job with this song.

    B.... F....

Bobby Ferguson yes he did. It was at a very dark time for Dion too. This version is brilliant also.

  7. J.... 2....

I don't care what anyone says Cash was and is still is one of the kings of music. I listen to his music almost every day, this is one of my favourites. So relatable for me and I'm sure for many others too. He is a true legend.

  8. j.... ....

Just a fantastic wonderful piece of music ,lyrics are so true and right on.

  9. A.... C....

Hello guys! Since English is not my mother language and I can't get the "real" meaning of the chorus can someone explain exactly how an English speaker would interpretate it?

  10. j.... ....

Beautiful song ,so realistic,ie real Life

  11. j.... ....

I've just heard this song recently and I'm 60, this is fantastic so sad melancholic, God I'm crying as I write this, R.I.P the great Johnny Cash.

  13. p.... l....

only one johnny cash love ya man thankyou so much x

  14. C.... H....

Cash is the only person who topped Gram Parsons in covering Tim Paxton material in my humble opinion.

  15. J.... M....

appreciate the pain its a blessing - Cash

  16. J.... Z....

    Help me

    E.... v....

Eduard van de bilt grow up.

    E.... v....

You seem to think the same so maybe you can answer that. You commented!

    E.... v....

maybe because they are alone and just need to get it out.....even if no one cares

    E.... v....

Eduard van de bilt you are fucking retarded

  20. H.... D....

When I here a song from the American recordings albums, I get all emotional. They speak to me in ways that no other music does. And songs like this one make me wish that Mr. Cash didn't die when I was so young

    H.... D....

Heath Day so True i have the same thing. But now that i want to live again i can cry and Smile right after these moments

    H.... D....

  27. H.... V....

Where are all wandering, rambling and bound for the same place. It is what and who you wander past that matters.

  28. E.... D....

I adore Johnny Cash, playing this on guitar tonight. I love the American VI: Ain't No Grave album where Johnny Cash confronts mortality.

  29. G.... D....

This is such a deep and rich song and really  just fits it my life right now.  But it also offers an acceptance and a chance for redemption.  I want to live a good life.

  30. L.... B....

Got 3 of the American cds for Christmas and this is becoming a firm favourite!

  31. G.... H....

If only my life had a theme song

    G.... H....

+Grant Henderson that's easy make your own :)

    G.... H....

it does, everyone's life has a theme song. you just have to decide what song it'll be.

  32. R.... H....

I always listen to this song on my birthday.

    R.... H....

i listen to it every night headset on laying in bed ,

  33. D.... C....

    Miss you Johnny, RIP

  34. F.... N....

    Quero chorar mas não consigo

    F.... N....

Essa música é foda. Na voz do Cash, ficou ainda melhor.

  35. M.... T....

From what i have heard of Johnny's religion, he's not being fair to Christianity, because the *certainty* I have on 'where I'm bound' depends on the God in Whom I've trusted, not my ability/works/character.

    M.... T....

    what's your problem,man...

    M.... T....

+Michael Thompson The entire American VI album is about him confronting mortality. This is definitely about heaven or hell for him.

    M.... T....

Michael don't worry about it, just love the song, ie fuck all that religious bullshit, the biggest con of all mankind and the biggest cause of mankind's wars

  36. G.... J....

    Rambling too

  37. M.... B....

A second nod to Steven Delopoulos. Fabulous.

  40. M.... T....

Do we hear governments, the mass media, and academia calling for Japan to bring in millions of non-Japanese people and assimilate with them because they're "not diverse enough"?

Exactly -- we ONLY hear this about White countries. You anti-Whites are calling for the genocide of White people.

    Anti-racist is a codeword for anti-White.

    M.... T....

    What are you on about?

    M.... T....

What does this have to do with Johnny Cash...?

    M.... T....

    You're bent

I love this song it's helped me with some of the most troubling times in my life

  42. T.... ....

Thank you Johnny for helping with a terrible night

  43. G.... C....

It sounds like it is probably a synthesizer with a electronic keyboard effect.

  44. f.... ....

Nice said! And I guess you got what he gave while singing. He is not the only one, but one of those who don't just have a "job" to make as much money as possible. But they have a "profession" and something to say. Did you listen to Nick Drake? Leonard Cohen or neil young? Patty Smith, Billy Holliday?

  45. t.... ....

every song on Cash's album are his best songs @Khvito75

  46. 1.... ....

But what's the instrument at the end?

  54. J.... H....

I'm already a Cash fan. This is one of my favorites of all time. Powerful

  55. M.... M....

Did you notice the chorus is the same tune as "Blowin' in the Wind"? Pretty cool

  56. D.... ....

What a great song for Cash to do at the end of his life - it's a reflection of his life and career. RIP JRC, you're still the best.

  60. V.... ....

What beautiful lyrics ~ and Johnny Cash's voice was the perfect one to sing them. Thank you for posting this ... I am going to buy the CD it came from.

  61. J.... E....

This song is the story of my life. God Bless Johnny Cash R.I.P

  62. J.... ....

This was written by Tom Paxton, and English folk singer. Great song.

    J.... ....

Tom Paxton, born in Chicago, grew up in Oklahoma and got started as folksinger/songwriter in Greenwich Village, NY....but, yes, very popular in England.

  63. M.... D....

  67. b.... ....

    miss you johnny

  68. M.... ....

@Khvito75 Well how bout all of Cash's albums? : )

  69. Z.... B....

Whenever I listen to Johnny Cash on youtube, it annoys me that I can only give Thumbs Up once.

  70. I.... ....

that reminds me of my Grandfather.

  71. C.... ....

Actually he was the King of Music Period, because he crossed all musical boundaries successfully, and made whatever he sang his own.

  72. s.... h....

    great song

  73. m.... ....

@PearlJammer07 theres still a few im trying to find like orange blossom special thats a rare one lol

  74. P.... ....

@johanemil The king of country as well.

  75. P.... ....

@mofoca22 I buy most of my music at Best Buy. For the rare or hard to find stuff i go to a specialty record store. There for it is not your average music store. :) Amazon only had a few of the OLD Johnny Cash records on CD. Thank you for the info.

  76. m.... ....

@PearlJammer07 they are out is just that you'll never see them at your average store where you buy your music. look on amazon they have tons.

  77. P.... ....

What a good song. Cash never put out a bad album. I cannot help but wonder why many of his older albums are not out on CD? I guess there are so many cover songs on them Columbia does not want to buy the rights to the songs again. Cash's albums with American records are master pieces in their own right.

  78. P.... B....

I love Johnny's version of just about everything he does. But this is really beautiful and touching. Like it was written for him. That was his gift. He could take "any" song and make it his own.
    Paul

  79. C.... G....

    Great!!!

  80. J.... B....

i think this is my favorite song on the album

  81. h.... ....

The first time I listen to this I almost shed some tears...and believe me, I am not used to that.

  82. J.... R....

Beautifully performed. The best track on the album, if you ask me.

  83. H.... H....

Heh, thank Universal Music Group for not putting the bannhammer down on this video, or it's audiotrack. :)

  84. m.... k....

Swiat jest maly hihihi......... pozdrawiam po polsku ,chociaz nie z Polski

  85. M.... ....

Thak You Henrik for this SONG :)
