Johnny Cash - Ballad Of A Teenage Queen Lyrics

(Dream on, dream on teenage queen prettiest girl we've ever seen)

There's a story in our town
Of the prettiest girl around
Golden hair and eyes of blue
How those eyes could flash at you (How those eyes could flash at you)
Boys hung 'round her by the score
But she loved the boy next door who worked at the candy store
(Dream on, dream on teenage queen prettiest girl we've ever seen)

She was tops in all they said
It never once went to her head
She had everything it seems
Not a care, this teenage queen (Not a care, this teenage queen)
Other boys could offer more
But she loved the boy next door who worked at the candy store
(Dream on, dream on teenage queen you should be a movie queen)

He would marry her next spring
Saved his money, bought a ring
Then one day a movie scout
Came to town to take her out (Came to town to take her out)
Hollywood could offer more
So she left the boy next door working at the candy store
(Dream on, dream on teenage queen see you on the movie screen)

Very soon she was a star
Pretty house and shiny car
Swimming pool and a fence around
But she missed her old home town (But she missed her old home town)
All the world was at her door
All except the boy next door who worked at the candy store
(Dream on, dream on teenage queen saddest girl we've ever seen)

Then one day the teenage star
Sold her house and all her cars
Gave up all her wealth and fame
Left it all and caught a train (Left it all and caught a train)
Do I have to tell you more
She came back to the boy next door who worked at the candy store

(Now this story has some more, you'll hear it all at the candy store)

  38. G.... F....

    This is a good song.

  39. J.... B....

"Oldies" (30s, 40s, 50s, 60s) music had the best rhythms and lyrics; told the best stories, melodically and synchronized. Music will never be the same.

  40. D.... B....

I wasn't yet 13-YO when this song popped up on a Los Angeles station, maybe KDAY because radio stations KFWB, KRLA, and KHJ were still out on the horizo at the time. I don't recall anyone not liking it, although we all thought Johnny sounded a little like a farmer, but we liked him. Little did I know that little more than 4-years later, after chasing all the hometown girls, while working working at the liquor store, I'd be listening to Johhny and other country singers 24/7 while plowing through the Pacific on a destroyer. Well, I converted to the Nashville Sound and the Texas Sound and the Bakersfield Sound and never went back to R&R.

  41. c.... r....

we lost a good one whem we lost cash, nothing can compare to this gold music

  42. T.... P....

  43. J.... S....

  44. Z.... ....

Johnny didn't really like that song. Guess why he did...

    Z.... ....

@TSMPimpDaddyPain for a record player needle

    Z.... ....

    Because he experienced that...

  45. r.... ....

I was soooooo in love with a girl who lived in my modest subdivision when this song was popular. Her name was Patsy Kelley. I think I was, maybe, y years old. I once asked my Mother if it was OK for little girls to spend the night with little boys. Her reply was my earliest lesson in what would become many regarding the differences between the genders.

  46. M.... R....

my dad used to sing this to me.

    M.... R....

    Mindysue Robison that’s really sweet.

  47. J.... K....

RI.P THANKS FOR AL YOU SONGS I LOVE IT .

  53. J.... D....

    great song and story

  54. R.... ....

During the early days of Rock N Roll, A lot of Country Artists crossed over to the Top 40. Johnny did so on 2/3/58 with this song that went to No. 14, and stayed charted 19 weeks!

  55. S.... H....

don't make artists like this anymore. RIP Johnny

    S.... H....

    Scott Haydock agreed

  56. R.... V....

    D.... W....

have to find out at the candy store!

    D.... W....

yes you will illl kick your ass

    D.... W....

I would guess no. “Cowboy” Jack Clement was a great songwriter and this is “just” one of many he wrote. My personal favorite he wrote was Just Between You and Me for Charley Pride.

  59. A.... J....

God I love this gem of a hit beautiful just beautiful to listen to over and over again I love you johnny stay forever gold up there with June peace to everyone out there.

  60. J.... S....

I lived in a small town in Oklahoma back in the fifties when I first started to listen to radio on a regular basis. I was 10 years old back and this Johnny Cash song was one of the first records I remember hearing.

    J.... S....

    Im from Okie!!

    J.... S....

    Norman.

    J.... S....

    you are a lucky generation!

    J.... S....

Cash wasn't really crazy about this song. It was given to him by Jack Clement as a potential "hit" but he thought it was a little juvenile.

    J.... S....

John Schlobohm where did u live in ok

  61. S.... M....

  62. C.... ....

    ❤️XXXOOOXXX❤️

  63. D.... L....

These older songs are way better than the songs that my generation listens to, this song actually tells a good story unlike the ones we here now about The same old sob love stories, i should really show this to my friends

    D.... L....

This is a love song, do you know the words

    D.... L....

+Dalen Lewin modern songs dont tell stories, its about random stuff

this song is a real story

  64. N.... ....

Does anyone understand the logic behind this recording - it was recorded the same day as 'Big River' which featured a full band. Where were they when this song was recorded! - no Luther Perkins or Marshall Grant - It's Johnny Cash strumming an acoustic and someone playing a snare with brushes - later on they add a vocal chorus - and it's a big hit!! - strange.

    N.... ....

The backgroung vocals were added by Jack Clemet. The Gene Lowery Singers. Some who have heard to alternate takes without the background, and like it better. On some of the Sun music that well maybe true, but this song is best with the background singers. The Alternative takes can be heard on the Bear Family recordings.

    N.... ....

@Marvin Thayer Cowboy Jack wrote it.

    N.... ....

The snare sound was paper in the frets of Cash's guitar. Cash has mentioned that several times , including on Marty Stuarts first show. That Marty Party. This song also has the melody of twinkle twinkle little star. Down the Street to 309 is the same melody.

    N.... ....

@city zen He wrote the lyrics, the melody is twinkle twinkle little star.

  65. G.... C....

    kinda crackly

    G.... C....

That's how records sound. It gives them that vintage that many people love about them.

  66. R.... P....

i need a new needle for record player

    R.... P....

    mill music renfrew ontario

  67. R.... S....

I was 13, I think, living in the rurals of Sonoma, CA when I got this record - the Sun records 45. I listened to it over and over. I can't hear it without thinking of my stay there.

  68. r.... t....

I WAS 14 @ THE TIME IT CAME ON THE BARN RADIO i think the cows gave more milk when they heard  JONNY

    r.... t....

ronald tooke ...nice that was funny....sorry I took so long to respond.....I got here as soon as I wanted....plus I had to wait up for those dang cows because all I had was Elvis.....

  69. J.... S....

John Sebastian does a great version of this song.

    J.... S....

    John? Or joan

  70. J.... ....

He wouldn't want that, though. He was a man of values.

  71. V.... ....

I went to the candy store today to here more and they just looked at me

  72. B.... D....

    Calm yourself.

  73. E.... ....

Here you left your dignity back at my place.

  74. b.... ....

This was the first record I ever bought! Bought it at Kranick's Music Store, down on West Broadway, in Ocala, Florida! It's a 45rpm, and I think the cost was 50/75 cents! (A fortune for a 14 year old back then!) I still have it, and have been a Johnny Cash since then! Hard to believe he's gone, but at least the music remains!) (Thanks O.V.R.)

  75. H.... P....

    love you gabs

  76. L.... H....

Johnny Cash is the best! This is real country music.

  77. 6.... ....

Blimey Cheyan I dread to think what his mate a certain Mr Presley would do to you

  78. m.... ....

This hit by Johnny Cash went to #14 on the Top 40 charts. It hit #1 on the Country & Western charts. It would finish at #81 for the year, 1958.

  79. P.... B....

I cant believe 50 +years after I first bought this I'm still drooling over it! Thank you Mr Cash for the lifelong pleasure you have given me!

  80. b.... ....

This version sounds real i like it.

  81. h.... ....

I remember listening to this song when I was in jail...lol...

  82. D.... F....

    He's dead.

  83. P.... H....

Yea this sounds like the original. I could be wrong but I think it's the flip side if the original Big River on a 78 rpm.

  84. f.... ....

thats true any 45 will sound MUCH better then any cd. mp3 tape or youtube vid
thats why 45's are so awsome, its the real deal the original as it was meant to be heard
my collection is 500 and growing daily if you hear one playing on a decent tun table you will def notice how much better it sounds

  85. C.... ....

    @Chambersaviator
    Released January 6, 1958

  86. a.... ....

    @Dunwyche Lucky :D

  87. P.... ....

@mishmouse67 No its not just you, music sounds better on record because your getting the whole sound wave instead of a digitalized version in which you don't get the whole sound wave let alone the greatness of each band and song....

  88. J.... ....

@Dunwyche i envy you so much right now xD

  89. m.... ....

Is it just me or does music sound better on record?

  90. W.... ....

    A godlike voice

  91. S.... ....

    @taterbodine1 Great song now, too!

  92. v.... g....

@RaananVolesPianist i wouldnt say that but i agree it sounds alittle more...upbeat? than say...i walk the line or home of the blues but its a really good song

  95. D.... ....

I'm proud to say I have this on vinyl. w00t!

    D~

  96. R.... ....

I'm a big Johnny cash fan, and this is way below his usual material. It's an ultra-commercial song that doesn't stand the test of time.
