John Stewart - Gold Lyrics
When the lights go down in the California town
People are in for the evening
I jump into my car and I throw in my guitar
My heartbeat in time with my breathing
There's people out there turning music into gold
Ah, my buddy Jim Bass, he's a-working pumping gas
And he makes two-fifty for an hour
He's got rhythm in his hands as he's tapping on the cans
Sings rock and roll in the shower
Driving over Kanan, singing to his soul
There's people out there turning music into gold
Each one a song in the making
Singing right to me, I can hear the melody
Story is there for the taking
Driving over Kanan, singing to my soul
There's people out there turning music into gold
(Ooh)
Driving over Kanan, singing to my soul
There's people out there turning music into gold
When the lights go down in the California town
People are in for the evening
I jump into my car and I throw in my guitar
My heartbeat in time with my breathing
Driving over Kanan, singing to my soul
There's people out there turning music into gold
Flying over Kanan, singing to my soul
People out there turning music into gold
People out there turning music into gold
People out there turning music into gold
(Ooh, yeah)
People out there turning music into gold (into gold)
People out there turning music into gold (into gold)
People out there turning music into gold (into gold)
(Yes, babe)
People out there turning music into gold (into gold)
Rocking on the radio
People out there turning music into gold (into gold)
Slipping down the back road
People out there turning music into gold (into gold)
People out there turning music into gold (into gold)

Heard this playing in a grocery store got home and googled it
Heard it at the grocery store and googled it because I could 't remember who recorded it.
Same here
The songs they play in stores are targeting age groups who they think are spending money, put them in a good mood
Got lucky with this song playing at devils bowl speedway in vermont back in the day.brings back alot of good memories for sure!!
Timeless song... will never get old or tired of listen 2 :-)
Loved John Stewart. His California Bloodlines album is still one my favorites of all time.
Love this song
RIP John Stewart. I remember.
here again!! wishing I was back there again-when this came out. Worry free!!!!!!
Wow!! A very great song!! Remember when it came out. $2.50 an hour pumping gas. Still had some gas stations that pumped the gas for customers. m :)
Can still get your gas pumped for you in some places in Australia.
so 70's SOOO AWESOME!!!!!!!
Where's Stevie Nicks?
Jeez. Sings duet with Stewart on the chorus.
Professional courtesy to not steal the limelight appearing in the vid.
Say what......ya can't tell her voice????
This version should be on Apple Music for real
Once upon a time, there was an incredible music industry with thousands of groups and soloists turning music into gold ... and then came Rap music ... and it all turned to SHIT!
the only fault with this is no stevie nicks. but otherwise nice to place a face with the name.
He recently did a remix on spotify ruining his own song. I don't even think this version is on Spotify...???
alphazoom II he passed away a few years ago, but this originally was huge with gay clubs, we just loved it !
Hard believe this man wrote The Monkees and Canadian Anne Murray hit Daydream Believer! and sang in the 1960s folk group The Kingston Trio.
this is why i love the net. thanks for the info.
i was playing music for a living when this song came out - i immediately started doing it. every musician who's ever struggled on the road can identify.
This is real music for sure!
Dude plays white Strat and even strums it like Lindsay. Sounds like a Buckingham solo too.
Scott McLennan Gibson Les Paul.
princeofd 66 yeah what was I thinking?
Summer of 79!!
This song makes me remember riding my bike in that most wonderful of all summers- 1979, with my transistor radio swinging from my handlebars. This song blarin' from that tiny speaker as I cruised my subdivision. Loved this song then and love it still. Kids today just don't have a clue, do they? I don't think it got any better, coming of age in the 1970s.....did it?
simpler times my friend
@William Morse At the expense of having "old home week" I will expand a bit on my locale as well. I live in a town which is bisected by the mighty Tennessee River. To my east is The Blue Ridge Mtns and western North Carolina (which very well could be "God's Country") and to the west are the Cumberland Mtns, both of which are older mountain ranges than the Rockies. To my south is the Great State of Georgia up from which Chickamauga Creek flows up into TN very close by me. There are so many Cherokee words for towns and landmarks around here that I won't bore you with. Anyway finally, yes it does indeed sound as if we kindred spirits even if you are a Yankee. Ha Ha, just kidding Mr. Morse. Merry Christmas from Dixie to you and yours as well and may you prosper in the New Year.
@Tennessee Ridgerunner thank you for giving me the lay of the land.... very interesting snapshot of an area
I last hitchhiked through in the autumn of '74 (on a lark).... if you took pictures of where we both live, no
doubt there would be strong similarities... you probably love freight trains winding up and down grade as
well.
again, God blessings on you and yours.... we are entering a most interesting year....
Yes!!!!
@Tennessee Ridgerunner 'Pain' by The War on Drugs; 'Lo/Hi' by The Black Keys; 'Weird Ways' by Strand of Oaks; 'Rylan' by The National, just to get you started
Which people is he referring to I wonder lol...
RIP, John.
Remember this from whence I was a little little guy...never have forgotten it...
"Gold" from the album Bombs Away Dream Babies released in 1979. Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, both of Fleetwood Mac, appeared on the album. Nicks sang background vocals. Buckingham sang, played guitar, and co-produced.
Song you hear is original recording, his mouth is not in sync with the, music plus where is stevie nicks in video?
john diesel this is not the original video the original has over 700 thousand views this is the performance off of solid gold TV show in the original the crowd is clapping in the beginning and in the end in this video you don't hear the crowd at all this video it has been edited
And back when music meant something
Can’t find this version on iTunes. Or google music wicked lame
I was just a kid when this song came , and we were in some dusty town where the wind was blowing and this song was playing . Oddly enough it was perfect considering how bleak the scenery was . That was about 1979 and that song has been a favorite .
Tony Gutierrez I have similar experiences quite a bit with these 70s tunes. funny how it brings you back to that scene like it was yesterday.
Thank you. Great musics lasts.
Pretty gay
Then you should like it
CaptainSpauIding it seemed like music to me. Unlike modern videos there isn’t any sex in it. Where did you get gay from?
Go back to bed pajama boy...
Funny quote from my old man on this song back in the day “drink a lot of liquor fall into the road” lol great song nonetheless of course !
Formerly of the Kingston Trio from the 60s
Hadn't heard this since I was a kid. It came on the radio here in Dallas.
heard on XM ch. 32 this morning!
This song came out when I was a kid..loved it then, kinda forgot about it. Thrilled to have found it again, love it even more now. Stevie on background and harmonizing with John is so terrific! Thanks for sharing it.
Again- anyone know who Stewart used on keys for this performance?
I believe it was Joey Carbone.
👍👌
Blast from the past...great song..
Good thing this video is in 4K, it really improves the quality
>.>
Very nice Sammy! Thanks! 👏
Big fave of mine!! Tiger.
Big hit here!!
Same with me, Tiger. Thanks!
I didn't know that Tiger!
Great matching to the video footage Sammy. I think I hear this one for the first time...
Thanks Jacob. Most likely not promoted outside the U.S.
Great song...tha man who wrote "Daydream Believer"...Stevie Nicks is the uncredited background singer
Thought I heard her back there
@Alfred S Lindsay on guitar as well.
Lindsey produced the album.
I heard her!
