John Prine - Sweet Revenge Lyrics

I got kicked off Noah's Ark
I turn my cheek to unkind remarks
There was two of everything
But one of me
And when the rains came tumbling down
I held my breath and I stood my ground
And I watched that ship go sailing
Out to sea.

[Chorus:]
Take it back
Take it back
Oh no, you can't say that
All of my friends
Are not dead or in jail
Through rock and through stone
The black wind still moans
Sweet revenge
Sweet revenge
Without fail.

I caught an aisle seat on a plane
And drove an English teacher half insane
Making up jokes about bicycle spokes
And red balloons
So I called up my local deejay
And he didn't have a lot to say
But the radio
Has learned all of my favorite tunes.

[Chorus]

The white meat is on the run
And the dark meat is far too done
And the milkman left me a note yesterday
Get out of this town by noon
You're coming on way too soon
And besides that
We never liked you any way.

[Chorus]

Johnny stay alive you look AMAZING.

  2. Miles North

First verse = rejected because of his individuality and he couldn't possibly care any less knowing he'll fair well on his own. Great song, maybe my favorite of his.

  31. truthseeker215

Sounds like a rap song "all my friends are dead or in jail"

    Mike Kapaun

quite the opposite... "are *not dead or in jail"

    Cactass Dupree

are Not dead or in jail...  tellem mike

    Mister EIE

+Cactass Dupree Actually I always thought it was "are now dead, or in jail".

    Cactass Dupree

+Mister EIE thank you you very well could be that I don't hear that well and make up my own words sometimes thank you again

    Cactass Dupree

+Mister EIE PS I still love this guy's music and his spirit

  32. Beth A. Franke

Thank you to John, the first performer I met in my little music world, which now, at age 52, is a continuum of styles & players relating to everything I knew when I met & began photographing John Prine at age 17.  I do believe life runs in circles... probably until the point you "get it" and "I'm Still Tryin'..."  The people I now know are the best fingerstyle guitarists in the world... and it all started with one person in Addison, IL.  Thanks, John

  33. Calvin Snow

Wish I could write like that, poor me, sheltered life.   ; )

  34. Kiwi Jake

Second best - after Tom T. Hall - but none the less, a classic.

  38. treblejunkie

    Pitch Perfecter.

  39. cptnspldng

If you are looking for songs that will truly break your heart, may I suggest "Sam Stone," "Donald & Lydia," and "Far from Me." He has written many wonderful songs, but those three will cut you deep.

    Thomas McGowan

    Don't hello in there

  40. cptnspldng

I just made a point of dropping a link to this song to the showrunner of "Justified." Prine should be heavily featured on that show anyway, but this song must be featured if Dickie Bennett and/or Dewey Crowe ever return.

  41. fart813

    lawd have mercy........

  42. Shiori Gum

I got a court martial in 1972, was found guilty even though I was innocent. I had a bad case of aphasia and the judge knew it. I still want sweet revenge.

"I got kicked off of Noah's ark ... there was two of everything and one of me"....

  59. Joe H

@Sfpsycho415 Not here for the same reason, "leaves of grass" great movie... Great artist right here nonetheless

  60. jamjax

Been a Prine fan for years. But i'm here for Big Fan!!!

    Randy Beeman

@jamjax a late brither of mine turned me on to this in 77 . In high school

  61. Jake Jarrell

I am here because John Prine is Dylan with a soul, I've seen Prine 30+ times and I'm only 30 years old.

    The Free Radical Art

I love Prine too, was listening to him at 10 yrs old. To imply that Dylan has no soul is off course and uninformed. Look into his song "Hurricane" in which he sings about a boxer wrongfully convicted of murder. That man was released because of Dylan's song.

  62. Edward Balko

Dedicated to the "uninvited".... The Renegade King.

  63. Bob Baggins

you should upload often is a word i seldom use

  64. suckerpawnch

Thank you, Sklar Bro country, for leading me to Big Fan, and this song!

  65. Jerry Stanaway

I wonder if anyone ever pointed out to John Prine that this song has the same tune as the hit song "Delta Dawn."

  66. samuidesune

love the little guitar intro to this great song

  67. Gregory W

    @yukonnoka amen

  68. Larry Harris

@TheHeliumkid A question ain't really a question if you know the answer ,too.( to answer your question) I think it's one of his all-time best , but it does get kinda over-looked . My favorite of all his songs , though is also greatly over-looked . "Come Back to us Barbara Lewis , Hare Krishna Beauregard " . Besides such a great title , some of the best lyrics he ever wrote. " My spirit's broke , my mind's a joke , and getting up's real hard . "

  69. Larry Harris

What movie ? They made a movie of Sweet Revenge ? When ? Why didn't I hear about it ? I've been following JP since 1973 and the only movie I know about was the Billy Bob thing a few years back . Was this song in that ? I don't remember .
Where is "Come Back to us Barbara Lewis... " on here?

  70. yukonnoka

I dedicate this song to every good person that is in jail but doesn't belong there...

  71. Murray-Baugh Songs

    damn great songwriter...

  72. Bart Barcroft

He is the greatest song writer ever! He is the only performer to ever play at the library of congress. He is a legend in his own time!

  73. chavedappelle

    @MrTehproworld How is that "gay"?

  74. Kmak 91

The white meat is on the run and the dark meat's far too done and the milk-man left me a note the other dayyyyy...get outta this town by noon, your comin on way too soon and besides that! we never liked you anywayyyy <<<<< my fave verse in this song

  75. Noah B

    Prine is a genius

  76. TheHeliumkid

does anyone else think clocks and spoons is overlooked?

  77. MrTehproworld

is'n it real gay how most of the people who know about JOHN PRINE found out about him cause of that movie BIG FAN? Cmon people he's like a legend!

    Jaxxon Wilcox

MrTehproworld I don't know what movie u are referring to but it doesn't matter how people came to know and love John Prine, be thankful his music reaches new ears everyday. I came across him by mistake in jail. I was a trustee and I asked the matron to burn me some cds with Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Primus, Acid Bath, Lollipop Lust Kill, and u know, hard ass shit, and she puts In Spite of Ourselves on it and it becomes my favorite song to immediately. when I got out I looked up all his stuff. I love his music. Quite possibly the greatest song writer of all-time. It doesn't matter how one comes to hear it, what's important is that they do

  78. marcards steve

C'mon Eagle fans don't you wish Patton Oswalt would have shot Joe Banner or Andy Reid with red and blue paint balls? Great song and it was released right after Delta Dawn--72 the other 73.

  79. tfe423

Gobbingirl. Lol movie not exatley a chick flick. And your right , not a good movie, I liked because I know guys that call those talk shows and act like that. The film did have an element of revenge at the end, hence the song

  80. tfe423

I also heard this first at the end of Big Fan , I knew it was John Prine but was not famaliar with the song. Good movie. Great song. John Prine is a incredible song writer . Check out some of his other stuff on here and you'll see what I'm talking about ,

  81. Alex Daboub
