John Prine - God Only Knows Lyrics

God only knows the price that you pay
For the ones you hurt along the way
If I should betray myself today
God only knows the price I pay

God only knows
God only knows
God only knows the way that I feel
Is only a part of the way I feel
If I can't reveal the way that I feel
God only knows the way I feel
God only knows
God only knows

Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
If I should die before I wake
I pray the Lord my soul to take

God only knows
God only knows
God only knows
God only knows

God only knows when I'm not true
To the things that I say, and the things I do
And if I can't be true to the things that I do
God only knows the way I feel

God only knows
God only knows
God only knows
God only knows

I have four favorite singer/songwriters... John Prine, Kris Kristofferson, Delbert McClinton, Bob Seger. Have I got good taste or what?!

  2. B.... R....

There will be forever only ONE John Prine. Just like God, he never fails us!

  10. M.... S....

Incredibly profound song - but wrapped in simplicity ...anyone who is really concerned with a spiritual life......will face these questions , especially to oneself , I can relate to this song .

  11. W.... S....

John Prine has helped me make a small amount of sense out of the world. Amen Brother !

    W.... S....

You'll get mesmerized by alibis and limbo dance in Pairs
Please lock that door, it don't make much sense
That common sense, don't make no sense no more
It don't make much sense, that common sense
Don't make no sense no more

  12. W.... S....

    [Verse 3]
    Last night
    For a split sec
    I was a train-wreck
    I was a complicated guy
    I hope we don't find
    This's the last time
    We ever say "Goodbye"

    God Only Knows?

    very bob dylan

    C.... T....

Uh, no.. Dylan was a good one man artist. Some of his songs were insightful and cleverly written. Worth a listen. But that's it. John is a lyrical Einstein. There is no one now, or who will ever be born that can hold a candle to him. Not ever.

  14. B.... N....

The second verse is either genius or terrifying. Lol

  15. s.... &....

Loved you my entire life... your bus driver way back graduated with my dad and is still a neighbor all these years later so i have seen and enjoyed your music since birth!

  16. R.... S....

Great music WHEN driving long distances across anywhere.

  18. N.... D....

    Better than the beach boys?!?

  19. C.... P....

I've always been someone firmly in the boat of not liking country music. I've been forced to listen to pop and bro country on the car radio for years and it's driven me away from the genre entirely. That being said, I'm glad I gave this a listen. I don't know if it's going to make me a fan or if I'll even add it to my daily catalogue of music, but I did enjoy or and certainly appreciate it's roots. I will be exploring more of John Prine's work and searching out more true to form country music. Also a shout out to Anthony Fantano, without whom I wouldn't have heard this otherwise.

  20. S.... A....

Wow an actual good country artist

  21. c.... ....

i wanna see neil young's face when he listened to this the first time - omg <3

  45. M.... H....

Another ripper! John's vocal 'sustain' only getting better. And didn't the band get together and around this tangy piece!

  46. j.... b....

Saw John at the Paramount Theater in Seattle back in the 80's. He came on stage by himself, no band. I was at first disappointed, but he put on a solo concert that to this day is the best concert I have ever been too! Wow, great story teller and entertainer. Awesome.

  47. D.... B....

God only knows how thankful I am for new John Prine music! What a great gift.

  48. S.... t....

  51. D.... ....

God bless John Prine. One of the most underappreciated artists of all time. I wish more people knew of him and his genius.

    D.... ....

Saw him on PBS Austin city limits May 11, 2019. He sang songs that I wished would never end. I hear you!!!!!!

  59. b.... c....

    nice job my friend!!

  60. A.... L....

    Amen Brother John!

  61. G.... S....

Still producing great music. Is this filmed in Co Antrim?

    G.... S....

Grant. That was my immediate reaction also. It looks like that part of the video was shot from Carnlough, Co. Antrim, looking across Carnlough Bay towards Glenarm. I was born in that part of the country and it sure looked very familiar. ......... John Prine ...... Brilliant !!! Love his music and his wit. Missed him in Chicago last week :-) but I have been to some previous concerts.

  62. J.... ....

    Not his best work.

    J.... ....

    Where is your work?

  63. M.... ....

A great song with simple but true lyrics. It reminds me of Dylan's "Knocking on Heaven's Door". Also, it must be great to be in a point in your career where ALL the best musicians and singers want to be on record with you. The reason is that John is so great. He deserves all the attention.

  64. j.... ....

love it John, u still got it! fantastic new song of yours!

  65. H.... S....

What's god got to do with it?

    H.... S....

    That's easy: Everything!

    H.... S....

God does know and he's given some guidelines John. Read his book it's very enlightening. I love the song.

  66. M.... S....

mr prine, it was an honor to work with you at casino new Brunswick, Moncton , nb Canada. thanks for everything. you are the best

  67. s.... l....

Another beaut. Four (?) songs in and this album already sounds like classic Prine

  68. P.... G....

Like every other song you've done, I absolutely love this and it showed up on a day that I really needed it. Thanks John, once again you've pulled me out of what could have been a bad day! God bless you! My heart is smiling!!!!

  69. P.... W....

thanks for john prine, the man,

  70. m.... ....

Thanks John - you've been a huge songwriting inspiration over my decades at it - your ability to tonally and lyrically slow down complex emotions and situations so a mind can glimpse them for what they are and what they aren't is rare. You've made a huge contribution to art and its evolution - thank you and my best _ mario

  71. g.... s....

Thank you so much for this, Mr. John

  72. B.... C....

Thanks for continuing to bless us with new music even after all these years.

  73. c.... ....

Wishing you all the best Mr. Prine.

  74. H.... ....

That Jason Isbell feller sure is an underrated picker. Jason, on the off chance you are reading this comment (God only knows the odds of that), you should check out George Harrison's slide playing on his last album Brainwashed. You remind me a lot of his later work when you put the little tube on your finger. Hell of a song, as always -- Prine never disappoints.

    H.... ....

His name is Jason Wilbur. Love him. An Indiana boy.

    H.... ....

Ginger Jones , Jason Wilbur is of course John's amazing long time guitarist.
However in this song, John is accompanied by Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires.

    H.... ....

4199ny that's right! When i first saw the NPR Tiny Desk mini concert and heard Summer's End, i was so moved - to tears. I started reading about and heard mention of Isbel. I mixed up the names when somewhere I said that his addition to the show was one of the greatest things I could imagine-it's Jason Wilbur. His playing is superb.

    H.... ....

Ginger Jones I bet you feel a lot of pride when Tom Petty (Rest his gypsy soul) sang 'She grew up in an Indiana town ... with those Indiana boys on an Indiana night.' I know myself, being from Texas-a state many mention in song, when I heard Chris Rhea sing about going to Texas, I said What?! I felt something a little magical. Just like when John says, 'there's a motel in Shreveport, don't ask me where please...' I'm from a small town about an hour from Shreveport. I found it fascinating that John mentioned lil ole Shreveport. ;-)

    H.... ....

yeh jason has been a loyal deputy ....and one day - should carry on the torch for prine i reckon .

  75. m.... d....

Yes, Amen, God DOES know, and He understands, and the price He paid He knows, when He took it all and paid for ALL our sin on the cross, pouring out His love and dying in our place, then rising 3 days later, conquering sin and death, securing our place in His heaven and giving us the gift of eternal life, and all we gotta do is believe on Jesus!

Sometimes I wonder why He would save even a wretch like me, and the answer is pretty much the same ... God only knows! 😃
    Amazing grace. 🤗

God bless you, John, with all His love and grace, goodness and mercy.
Really looking fwd to the new release, and I pray it reaches and blesses many☺️ .

'My sheep hear My voice and I know them and they follow Me:
And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand.
My Father, which gave them Me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of My Father's hand.
I and My Father are one.' ~John10:27-30 King James Version~
    (and Psalm23, too)...with joy! ☺️

  76. l.... ....

    God bless you, John.

    l.... ....

Ron Bardwell ...and that's what made the tears start to flow in this song. There's nothing like... no other challenge like facing your own mortality and knowing that there's no way out. Yet whatever lies Beyond I hope John's there.

  77. J.... S....

I love ya. man. See ya in Champaign. This is so bucket llist.

  78. g.... w....

Thank you John. Beautiful having you and a couple of other favorites together.

  79. s.... ....
