John Prine - Crazy As A Loon Lyrics

Back before I was a movie star
Straight off of the farm
I had a picture of another man's wife
Tattooed on my arm
With a pack of Camel cigarettes
In the sleeve of my tee shirt
I'm headin' out to Hollywood
Just to have my feelings hurt

That town will make you crazy
Just give it a little time
You'll be walking 'round in circles
Down at Hollywood and Vine
You'll be waitin' on a phone call
At the wrong end of a broom
Yes, that town'll make you crazy
Crazy as a loon

So, I headed down to Nashville
To become a country star
Every night you'd find me hangin'
At every honky-tonk and bar
Pretty soon I met a woman
Pretty soon she done me wrong
Pretty soon my life got sadder
Than any country song

That town will make you crazy
Just give it a little time
You'll be walking 'round in circles
Lookin' for that country rhyme
You'll be waitin' on a phone call
At the wrong end of a broom
Yea, that town'll make you crazy
Crazy as a loon

So, I gathered up my savvy
Bought myself a business suit
I headed up to New York City
Where a man can make some loot
I got hired Monday morning
Downsized that afternoon
Overcome with grief that evening
Now I'm crazy as a loon

So I'm up here in the north woods
Just staring at a lake
Wondering just exactly how much
They think a man can take
I eat fish to pass the time away
'Neath this blue Canadian moon
This old world has made me crazy
Crazy as a loon
Lord, this world will make you crazy
Crazy as a loon

  16. p.... p....

The lead guitar player might be crazy as a loon, but he's one of the best I've ever heard.

    p.... p....

Gotta feel it to play it well. He was definitely feeling it

    p.... p....

The mandolin player is JP's son. He is much better playing than the guy playing lead, who this is the first time I've ever seen him with JP. The bass player is the usual too.

  17. M.... C....

i agree with one of the comments....why now that i'm 46 did it take me so long to find this guy? looking forward to seeing him in concert soon.

  18. W.... D....

Anyone who hit dislike needs their head examined. How uncool can you be?! Go someplace else. You don’t have enough cool points to be here.

  19. s.... ....

  24. R.... G....

I like listening to good music, it doesn’t get gooder than this.

  25. R.... M....

I discovered him in 1975 or 76. I've listened to a wide variety of music from a young age, and picking an all time favorite was always something I said I couldn't really do, until recently. Not that I ever stopped listening to it for very long, but I've now revisited JP's music at several stages of my life, and I kind of decided recently that I can say he is probably my all time favorite artist. He is absolutely a treasure. Glad you discovered him. My life would not be as rich without his music.

  26. j.... ....

I'm 53 and I remember when I was a kid, my cousin could play guitar and played Dear Abby and Paradise for his father. I thought those songs were so cool. Then when I got to be a teenager, I asked my cousin about those songs and where they came from and that was my real introduction to the greatest songwriter ever.

New country artists can't come close to artists like John Prine. His songs get better the more you listen to them.

  37. S.... C....

My wife and I saw John Prine in New York recently. Was good until he called the President of the United States an as#@$le! I sent a respectful email expressing my displeasure but he wasn’t man enough to reply. PEOPLE WHO HAVE DIFFERENT IDEOLOGIES ARE NOT WELCOME AT JOHN PRINE CONCERTS!

    S.... C....

he calls it as he sees it just saying

    S.... C....

As a huge fan for over 40 years that is very disappointing. I had not heard John get political. So genuinely sorry to hear.

  38. H.... C....

Jason is a compliment to the Man,as well as the character on the strat. The lack of me knowing the name,is not meant as disrespect, all blend to become what I consider magic. Thanks, and respect to the group !!

  47. K.... I....

TO BE HONEST, OUT OF ALL THE MUSICIANS I HAVE HEARD IN MY LIFE, NO ONE BEATS PRINE IN HIS PRIME, OR ANY OTHER TIME. TY @ THECOUGHS ; WOW 8 YEARS SINCE THIS UPLOAD!

  48. J.... ....

Sometimes I like imagining the absurd. Sometimes I think about the music. Think about the artists. Their friends that helped them along the way. Helped inspire or even compose a song. Then I think about all the artists who never cut an album and never got on the radio. Think about all the millions of songs that I'll never hear. Then again, I think I'm as crazy as a loon.

  49. 1.... ....

Some people are saying that he may be the Messiah but I don't believe that. He's not even Jewish and his Mamma was not a virgin as far as I know.

  50. A.... H....

I was given a cassette entitled"Prime Prine" in my freshman year @ College(78') by a friend. An instant fan I became to this day! The term "Musical Genius" is rarely true(especially nowadays)But in John Prine's case, No other description will suffice...

  51. S.... C....

John Prine, Bob Dylan, Loudon Wainwright III, Ike Reilly (order random)

    d.... p....

Need Kris K in the group too

  75. t.... ....

Dylan songs sound best when somebody else sings them. Price songs are best when he (Price) sings them himself. It goes straight to your heart.

  76. N.... J....

John Prine writes songs to tell us about how we were wrong all along.

  77. S.... W....

    Looking and sounding sharp!!

  78. G.... B....

Great song, great writer, but Jesus, maybe it's just me...but I think that lead guitar player needs to do the physical equivalent of "shut the fuck up and play"...all that weaving and gyrating around especially while the man is singing is just distracting from the tune and that is the main thing a lead guitar player should not do. Your job is to help the song not bring attention to yourself.

  79. j.... ....

    Music that lasts forever
