John Mellencamp - Peaceful World Lyrics
Come on baby take a ride with me
I'm up from Indiana down to Tennessee
Everything is cool as can be
In a peaceful world
We're sick and tired of being politically correct
If I see through it now but I didn't at first
The hypocrites made it worse and worse
Lookin' down their noses at what people say
These are just words and words are okay
It's what you do and not what you say
If you're not part of the future then get out of the way
Come on baby take a ride with me
I'm up from Indiana down to Tennessee
In a peaceful world
Racism lives in the U.S. today
Better get hip to what Martin Luther King had to say
I don't want my kids being brought up this way
Hatred to each other is not okay
Well I'm not a preacher just a singer son
But I can see more work to be done
It's what you do and not what you say
If you're not part of the future then get out of the way
Come on baby take a ride with me
I'm up from Indiana down to Tennessee
Everything is cool as can be
In a peaceful world
Lay back the top and ride with me
I'm up from Indiana down to Tennessee
Everything is cool as can be
In a peaceful world
The money's good and the work is okay
Looks like everything is rollin our way
'Til you gotta look the devil in the eye
You know that bastard's one big lie
So be careful with your heart and what you love
Make sure that it was sent from above
It's what you do and not what you say
If you're not part of the future then get out of the way
Come on baby take a ride with me
I'm up from Indiana down to Tennessee
Everything is cool as can be
In a peaceful world
Lay back the top and ride with me
I'm up from Indiana down to Tennessee
Everything is cool as can be
In a peaceful world
Hey yeah
Hey yeah
Hey yeah
Hey yeah

Master-peaceful!
This song didn't get the attention or airplay it should have
This song goes to show that a good message can come from someone you may not really agree with much. And it's just a good tune.
I am an Indiana born Hoosier that’s witnessed more harm than good on our society; at the end of day let’s try our best to find our inner peace within.
Thanks y’all and God bless!

Johnny's. A real musicans and artist......hands down
He doesn't wright no pop songs ......👍👍👍👍
I've been looking for this song for a long time. RIP John
Plus the drums sound. Oh my god how good. Mellencamp always had a strong and interesting snare sound
Were a big fan between 1992-1994, then somehow lost Mellencamp. Ok, this is alredy real old song, but for me it is new. And what a song it is!!! As usual, production is soooo airy and fresh!!1
Would be a GREAT song for Pete to use!!!
Love you hearts
Me and my middle Daughter Gabrielles song. Lay back the top and take a ride with me......

555666 Love You Hearts !!!
This was on the radio when 9 11 happened. I remember it just like it was yesterday and think about it often.
You are absolutely right.. I actually saw him live in concert on September 15, 2001 in Hershey PA believe it or not, and he played this as it was brand new at the time. It was pretty wild I will never forget it I actually thought for sure the concert was going to be cancelled, being just 4 days after 9-11 and the state the country was in, but they did have the concert.. I remember so well just even driving down there the feeling of somber almost eerie, not like the feeling on the way to any other concert I have ever been to..
Not a whole lot of people showed up, understandable, MAYBE a few thousand. And I remember three guys standing near the front rows draped in American flags, and people began chanting USA USA... Whole thing had a very patriotic feel to it. And Mellencamp said some pretty emotional statements..
Anyway sorry for rambling on a bit lol..
Comment just caught my eye and it stoked a memory... Great song
Damn, spot on for like ever, John always falls on the right side of history, Check it Out!

This song, although awesome, still reminds me of 9/11. It played on the radio the morning of 9/11 as I drove to work before the attacks 30 minutes later. Creeps me out now as I listen today, especially at 2:39
content of character !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love this song.
So be careful with Your heart and what You love,
make sure it was sent from above :)
It was difficult to figure out exactly what that instrument was that did the killer solo...it was so processed ....they did the live gig on late night......and it was apparent that it was a violin
Everything is cool as can be........great instrumental
Right On dambo!

s ' right
This song is the jam this is what I listen to on long car rides
I don't remember why I went down reading through the comments but boy was that a mistake,. I was already depressed. Apparently this came out around 9/11 and so the haters (democrats) had to rag on Pres Bush. Oh, and the comment just before this one was another one. Isn't it funny how the republicans wanted revenge on binLaden (that means war) and the democrats just wanted to apologize to binLaden, thinking that we our country surely did something to piss the poor guy off. And since we pissed him off, he had planes flown into the world trade towers killing 3,000+ people. War costs money....we didn't start it, binLaden did. By the way, LOVE the song John.
And yet it was the Democratic President who got Bin Laden. Why do Republicans live on lies? Bush went into the wrong damn country which is what Democrats were against.
Dude is cool as you like. Brilliant song.
Why have I not heard of this song or ever heard it on the radio? It sounds good, in all sorts of ways!
What an amazing voice this woman has, what a duet, just brilliant
I have always loved John Cougar Mellencamp but this song is one of his best.....also I can't stop playing this song and I saw u first......great artist all the way around I've been listening to his music for almost 35 yrs now......

This came out right after 9/11, I always thought it was said in defiance of those who were responsible and hoping we would live in fear after that event. By the video, it looks like not was not the intent, but at the time I think that issue was closer to people's conscience than this one, which pretty much most people are past, at least where I am from....
Well Charles - This was released right before 9/11. The fact that we were attacked & the whole country watched over 3,000 Americans die a violent death might have had something to do with the mood. Genius
Such a beautiful song, not played nearly enough on the radio.
A beautifull duet its what you do not what you say
never heard this from MY HUSBAND lol
LOVE IT
It's what you do not what you say. Live it.
this is what the USA needs today....!!!!!
What an artist!

AMEN! Let's keep on "Makin America Great!!!
When it comes to Ari herself, or John, its people like this who live in a world far beyond doing things based on the level 'am I gonna be listed in the credits? John has had many great musicians join him and leave him over the years. Ate through them like popsicles, too! But anytime I had the opportunity of engaging with this level of people I sense a people all individually focused having mainly there single one purpose is the final completion of joined efforts to produce a piece of art together, have juices and bagels together in passing, get their pay, and jolly out for another creational gathering episode in their career. It's all about the music! I think this is partly an explanation for John's lackadaisical premiering of such inclusions and who did what when? He could do a better job of crediting all participants per performance? He will have to for his next album release. It is going to be a dynamite crossing over to country-ism while enabling him to step back in time create songs as if he had written them many years ago? Might be kinda real Mellencamp-ish to the ears folks! Might be rated #1 on all charts? I havn't bought a cd in years. But I can't wait for this! Wait til you hear a song originally called Grandview! shhhh! It's nice and level, baby!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHN!!! Don't read the posts below because testosterone is still running rampant and men are still killing each other with words. LOVE YOU BROTHER!!!
JM at his very best. Incredible song. Voice is fire.
fire? you're an idiot
We can hope for peace. Hope is all we have.
lets do it
I remember hearing this song a couple of weeks after 9/11....
I remember this song on the radio in the uncertain days after 9-11. It made me feel better.
I'm don't know if YouTube can change info about the song or video after the fact, but when you go to more info, India Ari gets credit for the song. Are people not seeing this or am I missing something?
One of the best songs JM ever did--too bad the US was in such a hating, bombing, killing mood when the song was released.
Well put Stanley.
With that windy response from you Chuck, I come to the conclusion that I cannot fix stupid! Oh yea, it was a inside job! IDIOT!
Chuck you trash Tabletop & yet your the man mans with a kitty on your pic! Oh that says a lot!
Hey Chucky, if ya hate it here so much , move the fuck over there!
Tabletop, Vinny and Stan. And what has to be the ugliest gyrine I have ever seen. LMFAO.
It's sung as a duet with India Arie--NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT.
All I want is a peaceful world, but is too late?
If YOU are not part of peaceful solutions, get outta the way.
- my take on "cougar" ;-)
May 2016 be a better year than the one just gone.
If your not part of the future, then get out of the way.
John Mellencamp did not sing this alone. If you want to post a song about racism, INCLUDE THE BLACK WOMAN WHO SANG A MAJOR PART in your credits and title, please. India Arie did a wonderful job here and is a magnificent singer. Give credit where credit is due. Peace.

"Peaceful World (feat. India.Arie)" by John Mellencamp maybe get some glasses hey,
S. Peters Shut up.
S. Peters his purpose is to end shit like you, yeah big deal another person isn't included but pay attention to all his other music, lyrics, etc. damn
Now the information about India Arie is missing from the text below the song.
STFU....she was paid a lot of money to be part of this song ....
more than likely signed a contract....that she would be singing on this song .
Admittedly, without her....the song would have probably sucked...
haha blessings
Does it ever bother anyone else that India Arie has been given absolutely no credit here on youtube?
It's there, you have to click on SHOW MORE. She didn't write the song, she just sang it as a duet with JM, the writer, producer, and person who played on the song as well. She did an excellent job though.
I didn't say she wrote it or produced it. And when *I* posted this, I'm almost certain that credit wasn't there. If you'd notice, my comment was done 8 months ago. PLENTY of time to change credits. Still, it should be up there in the song title, imo.
I agree because it is a duet.
at 2:05 is an awesome instrumental that brings us all home....amazing
Racism lives in the USA, Get hip to what Marting Luther King had to say, I don't want my kids being brought up this way, Hatred to each other is NOT okay!
i think most honest to god racists are dead now. instead we have hucksters on all sides trying to make it out to be a big problem because the more people they convince that there is a problem = more power for the huckster.
but ultimately you know it doesnt really matter if someone is a racist. it doesnt really matter if people hate others based on skin color. why? because we all know that person is a fool and society as a whole treats them as pariah.
the problem becomes when people act on that hatred or racism - thats when it becomes a crime. nothing illegal about being a racist, plenty illegal about discrimination. it should be every bit as illegal to stoke racial tensions to try to earn a living from them.
@none I have taken a lot of college classes (I have nearly finished my psychology degree), and there is TONS of research showing that racism is still very common. Just one example: fake resumes with stereotypical black names are far less likely to be called in for an interview (when resumes are otherwise identical). People just don't admit to being racist now, because they will be treated as pariahs.
@Tahira Watkins congrats on the degree. i got my psych degree back in 96.
i am aware of bias. that is NOT the same thing as racism.
racism is defined as believing one race (usually your own) is superior to other races and that other races usually have certain racial characteristics and traits.
bias works with any group against all other groups.
every group naturally favors its own group to the exclusion of other groups.
i realize that the rev sharptons of the world make their living off of preaching that its a racial war of whites against blacks but its not true, nor is the antisemitism he espouses truth. hes just a con man. someone who discovered he can create a charity that makes 4 million and pay himself a million of that , not need to work hard with his hands, get power, and be important.
@Alfred Razzell yeah your right. my italian wife from sardegna whos blacker than black.. i married her a decade ago just to have something else to hide behind. and my very lightly dark daughter .. we just let her live with us so its another fig leaf to hide behind. right?
but way to toss out calling someone a racist with zero proof except a few sentences written on youtube. your willingness to call "racist" and point the finger just amply demonstrates that YOU are indeed part of the problem.
Regards from Germany. ...a wonderfull song that goes direct in the blood :-)
LOVE&PEACE is the answer in this crazy times

Love M'shell!!!
It's India Arie.
India Arie.
The thing about Mellencamp that I (and his many fans "get") about him is that he truly means what he writes and sings. He's the real deal! No bullshit. He writes and sings from the heart and if you don't like it, so be it. He's not going to change. He's not going to pretend. He's who he is to the core and it resonates through his music.
He's the 'Poor Man's' Springsteen...
Spruce Bringsteen ?...well....fell asleep snawww
Actually...early Top was amazoid
Bruce is a coward who told the draft board he was gay. Can't stand his music anyways.
