John Mellencamp - Cherry Bomb Lyrics
Well I lived on the outskirts of town
In an eight room farmhouse, baby
When my brothers and friends were around
There was always somethin' doin'
Had me a couple of real nice girlfriends
When I think back about those days
All I can do is sit and smile
That's when a sport was a sport
And groovin' was groovin'
And dancin' meant everything
We were young and we were improvin'
Laughin', laughin' with our friends
Holdin' hands meant somethin', baby
Outside the club "Cherry Bomb"
Say yeah yeah yeah
Say yeah yeah yeah
The winter days they last forever
But the weekends went by so quick
Went ridin' around this little country town
We were goin' nuts, girl, out in the sticks
One night, me with my big mouth
A couple guys had to put me in my place
When I see those guys these days
We just laugh and say do you remember when
That's when a sport was a sport
And groovin' was groovin'
And dancin' meant everything
We were young and we were improvin'
Laughin', laughin' with our friends
Holdin' hands meant somethin', baby
Outside the club "Cherry Bomb"
Our hearts were really thumpin'
Say yeah yeah yeah
Say yeah yeah yeah
Say yeah yeah yeah
Say yeah yeah yeah
Seventeen has turned thirty-five
I'm surprised that we're still livin'
If we've done any wrong
I hope that we're forgiven
Got a few kids of my own
And some days I still don't know what to do
I hope that they're not laughing too loud
When they hear me talkin'
Like this to you
That's when a sport was a sport
And groovin' was groovin'
And dancin' meant everything
We were young and we were improvin'
Laughin', laughin' with our friends
Holdin' hands meant so much, baby
Outside the club "Cherry Bomb"
Our hearts were really thumpin'
Say yeah yeah yeah
Say yeah yeah yeah

Groovin yeah yeah yeah
The part of the vid where the two girls are dancing in unison is such a great look into American nostalgia and it warms my heart to see the simple America where dancing "meant everything"...one of the greatest songs to flood the mind with thoughts of the past and how great it was!!!
AMEN JEFF

Just as the racially mixed couple in the video (once utterly verboten in American society), so will the Shi'ite and Sunni forces SOON, VERY SOON, be together...

I love how they shovel racemixing down your throat.

My favorite Mellancamp song ever! Makes you realize you need to enjoy the little things and make memories. Don't spend your life working. Enjoy life while you have it ❤
Mellencamp looks like Eddie the werewolf in The Howling.

Oh the flack he must have gotten on having a black guy and white girl dancing in the video..lol..don't bar an eye now..but back then...love it..great song..great memories..but i still call him john melloncougarcamp..
John has always had love for all races. He wrote Jack and Diane based on a interracial couple in which the guy was black and the woman was white, but he faced pressure from the record company to change the song. I'm glad he stayed determined and got the video of Cherry Bomb to have an interracial dancing couple. John is a rock'n'roll superstar, up there with Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Neil Young, Kris Kristofferson, Tom Petty, David Crosby, Billy Joel, Jackson Browne, Bob Seger, Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Linda Ronstadt and all the other musical superstars of that generation. I'll always cherish their music.
@Tommy Vilanch i love that his rebel attitude has stayed intact..he's a rare breed..sticks by what he believes in no matter what others think
Karen Menard
John's great grandfather came over from Germany, and he married a black woman. ♥️
@Tommy Vilanch Damn, I didn't know Jack and Diane was based on an interracial couple. Need to revisit that song.

1987, I was 23 years old full of piss and vinegar, now I'm 55 and counting. I miss my youth.
Great musician long live the cougar
What do you call that move at around 1:40? It’s like he’s hefting a baseball bat. I am not making fun of his moves, I think JCM is a great dancer in his own unique way.
Adam
He is doing the Boogaloo dance. ♥️
Music is colorless good is good
Haha I like this song
Where does the time go ?
He looks like Pauly Shore dancing in this video.
Thangs have changed. Now it's a circus
MB Canada here!
This tune instantly became one of my all time favorites the first time I heard it. That never changed. Its a timeless song that exemplifies a period of Classic Americana somehow.
Velox Versutus Vigilans
Whenever I hears this song, I gets up and starts dancing....and I ain't gots no legs!
🤣😂🤘
until the day I hit the grave I will continue to listen sing and dance to good old American bands. They made music over decades that to this day is better than the nosie pollution they now call music.
Linda from Wetmor City Limits in San Antonio Texas used to wait on me and my brother, we always pitched in for the jukeboxk she always played this. Get down Linda......Ray and Tony

Im a Black man and i approve of this awesome Artist cougar always had a nice sound that broke thru racial barriers.
Bully Times- I'm African American, as well; this is still one of my all time favorite songs. I throw it right in the midst of any R&B dusties, rock, or country mix list.
Jack and diane was originally written about an interracial couple but the record company made him change it to football star
Yeah man. I never knew but went to the rock and roll hall of fame and they told his story there. apparently the idea of the mixed couple dancing to his song came to mind and he told the studio. They told him they wouldnt let him - as a country star - have that music video. He said if they wouldnt let him have his music video, he woudlnt let them release his album. It all got released :) Real good dude, and real good music.
AMEN TO U BILLY. WHITE BOYS USUALLY HAVE NO SOUL BUT THIS IS AN EXCEPTION. FROM THE DELLPHONICS TO ALL THE GREAT SOUL MUSIC THAT WE ALL LUV

Connie Doyle
Rewind it before it gets to the end.
You can listen to it over and over with no ads, just the first ad before the video. ♥️
17 has turned 35...and I was ...
Now 62..dam where has the time gone...but still love this song and had to hear it tonight ...
I first heard John Cougar in early 1980 fell in love with this guy. He's a real gift ya'll. Read his story... fist EVER survivor of spinabifida surgery. It's something he never talked about...... on YouTube
Terrific autobiographical song. The video is a blast. that part with the knuckleheads in High School at the dance was great. The cheerleaders at the end were terrific too. Loved how they did their routine in sync with their routine. Music in his songs is always the best and the words really have a heartfelt message.
Ol boy can dance!
Jeff Albillar
Yes, the Boogaloo. ♥️💋
I have always loved this song and Mr. Mellencamp certainly has some smooth dance moves❣💃🎶🎵💃
Victoria G
Yes, he is dancing the Boogaloo. ♥️💋
@Chesapeake Bay indeed!
love this one.
I finally know the name of this song. That's when a smoke was a smoke. And groovin was groovin
Smoke was a smoke or sport was a sport? I see it different ways in different lyrics sources.
Smoke was a smoke seems to make more sense (smoking was a cigarette, not marijuana) but who knows? Refrain 1 sounds like sport and the others sound lime smoke. I'm baffled.
@Cornelius McGillicuddy that's when a smoke was a smoke....
And groovin was groovin.
Jeff Albillar
The lyrics say "sport" but I sing "smoke". ♥️
@Chesapeake Bay I just googled it & wow. I just learned something else about this song. Thank you, Deary
Trump 2020!!
