I always loved Johnny Cougar. As a young woman he captured me with his down to earth, grassroot melodies and lyrics. As I got older I came to appreciate his lyrics even more and today I think he is a underrated poet.

I'm 48. I still remember hearing him being called "John Cougar" on the radio. Then John Cougar Mellencamp. Then eventually John Mellencamp. Never really thought about it, but I grew up listening to this guy. I guess that's why I'm still not sick of him even after hearing every one of his songs 1,000 times.

I disagree. There were Plenty of bad days. My dads factory closed in 1982 and he was out of work for a long time and the unemployment rate was really high. Mellencamp was great though
