John Mayer - Tracing Lyrics
Do you ever get the feelin'
That we started in the middle?
Or have you ever had the sense
That we've been lying just a little?
I mean come on
And I can't say I really blame you for being bored with the beginning
Always staring at the score to figure out who's barely winning
But don't you know
There is a reason strong, move slow
And I'm okay
If you're okay with wasting time
But when you trace
You always see the bottom line
We are tracing
I hope you know
We are tracing
And if you want to know the moment
I knew that I was still alone
I found I never learned your number
I only stored it in my phone
You'd think by now
Id know the shape of calling home
And I'm okay
If you're okay with wasting time
But when you trace
You always see the bottom line
We are tracing
I hope you know
We are tracing
Were both alone
We are tracing
We are tracing
Did you ever get the feeling
That we started in the middle?
Or have you ever had the sense
That we've been lying just a little?
I mean come on
Its not like we've knew ourselves that long

Amazing
Normal person composes this: *Holy shit, this is great! I gotta publish it*
John Mayer composes this: *meh*
1:34 "And if you want to know the moment, I knew that I was still alone, I found I'd never learned your number, I only stored it in my phone. You'd think by now, I'd know the shape of calling home" Phenomenal songwriting!
This will forever be a favorite. I bought this album as an import years and years just for this song.
Awesome!
what does he mean by tracing? 🤔

This is a lyrical masterpiece
Still listening in this in 2019 😊
absolutely beautiful
How was this person able to get this track off of the single “bigger than my body” through the cd or ?
Carter Watson it isn’t from bigger than my body. It’s from Johns first ever studio album that also has Man on the Side on it. I have the CD somewhere. This is my fave JM song
Upload the live version pls.
I freakin’ love this song. Hits me right in the feels. Young Mayer.
This song makes me think John Mayer is Canadian.

Thanks for this! Been looking for a studio version. It's one of my faves from him. Is this on any of his CD's?
Trilha sonora da minha vida
This song is 15 years old, it's still sounds so fresh.
Could you perhaps share the audio file? I'm looking for mp3 of tracing and breakaway in 320 kbps. Impossible to find.
the only people who relate to this are the melancholy high school pseudo-preps whose parents were rich enough to give their kids a cell phone in the late 90s.
lol. Song came out in like 2004, around the time everyone had a cell phone. Do you still not have a cell phone? Is that why you can't relate to the song?
He's Brilliant & so good live!!! See in concert must.
Personally speaking Mayer presently is...& will be regarded as ~keeper of the flame~ during the flurry of "fluffer" electronic music.
JM is modern day Don Henley with his introspective soul searching songs, intersecting Steve Ray Vaughn's sexy, guitar slickie~style.
I absolutely hate his new album he's releasing in "waves". I miss the old John.
One of the few who has such easy listening music
For some reason it reminds me of On The Way Home.
Relaxing Korean thought the exact same thing the first time I heard it
so much better though...
Similar beat signature that's why
Johnny needs to just record an album of all these unreleased tunes. He easily has enough for 1 - 2 records
He is. Its coming out next year. Both a new album, and another one full of unreleased songs
Greg m well you’re 1 for 2
@Greg m but the last time he was asked about in your atmosphere, he said we won't hear studio version of it.
Greg m he didnt release it!
When's he gonna make music like this again? Seriously! 😒
I dunno how to describe it.. This song just gives every bad relationship a better ending.
and that is how you say it
Have you ever had the sense that we've been lying, just a little?
Yep. This one. Hits me right in the gut.
we are tracing
Someone recently covered this song and claimed they wrote it for me. LOL! As if I wasn't going to find that out. It is a very pretty song.
That's funny! At least they chose to steal from a songwriting master if they were gonna try to pull something like that 😂
Keep them. They tried covering a JM song for you.
"And if you want to know the moment
I knew that I was still alone,
I found I never learned your number
I only stored it in my phone
You'd think by now,
Id know the shape of calling home"
Fuck, John Mayer is a musical God. He's like a God from Greek mythology, the God of music. This probably hits so many people, but it definitely hits me right now.
I just moved cities, and I know no one here. Whenever I hear this song I think of home. Hits me hard too, man.
CarpeNoctem77 you know it
this song is so good, but I can see why it's not on any cd's. thematically it doesn't really mesh with any of his albums. would've worked well on room for squares, but it was written after that. lyrically it would work on battle studies, the instrumental would have to have an electric lead though. I think this should've been on where the light is, but maybe he's still keeping it up his sleeve!
Donald Regan it would have fit on Heavier Things. It has the same vibe has Split Screen Sadness in my opinion.
I think you're correct for this version; I must have been thinking of the live acoustic version of Tracing on my iTunes. It has a much brighter sound than this one, which is probably why I disregarded putting it on Heavier Things, even though it was written in that same time period.
I think it would fit perfectly On Heavier Things. When you consider songs like Split Screen Sadness and Wheel,
this song is like the missing piece.
I feel like his unpopular songs were his best.
agree paradise valley feel
Looking back at this, it kind of has a Paradise Valley feel. Should bring it back!
agreed!
Alex Desmall that's only because Wildfire and this song both start on a Dmaj sus2 chord.
Mayer could have done so much more with this, I love this song. One of my favorite songs of his.
It's so easy to just close your eyes and get lost in this song... simple yet beautiful
I know there is a bit more there Babe.
As of for now it is enough for me.
Q: How much would you rate as of 'enough'?
Q: How often do you evaluate yourself and the way of living?
Definitely not as much as we should probably...
Q: How often do I provide charity?
Know what is R from all the wrongs.

man youre fucking lucky.
Now this is some deep/powerful shit.. How can this song be so underrated is beyond me.
Right?! It better go on Zero, his unreleased compilation album he's gonna release.
+Francesco - imyourfm he's gonna do that?? Dear god I'd die
You'd think by now, I'd know the shape of calling home
The feels.
Thank u for uploading
John is a genius
That's amazing song!!!! Repeat mode on
I can't find it on iTunes. Can you please upload the audio file?
http://www.youtube-mp3.org/
I want high quality audio file. Preferably cd rip.
@Piyush Rawal clipconverter.cc
I never heard Mayer's tracing until now, and this song is too good to be off the track in bigger than my body album. :p
Good but i think his live version in As/is is actually better
Coming back I realise this is better! The vibe is lovely
awe!!!
Amazing !!! Nice job ! I record Tracing in my homestudio too. Check and tell me what you think about.
Delicious!
Beautiful song
Amazing
There is a reason strong, move slow, And I'm okay If your okay with Wasting time
But when we trace You always see the bottom line...
I love love love this. Can't beleive I've never heard this before. Wish this was on Itunes...
it is, but only the live version on As/Is album, 9th track
Can you sned me the studio version?
14 Katy perry fans.
This appears on the B-Side of "Bigger Than my Body", along with a cover of Radiohead's "Kid A". Check it on Amazon, it's less than $10. Also, I saw him in Grand Rapids last night and someone requested this and he forgot most of the lyrics to it.
so simple...yet genius...
Maybe because it's in the same key and also the same strum pattern..
It kinda reminds me of "On the way home". It could've totally be on Paradise Valley
I believe "Tracing" was only released on the Austrailian or European versions of "Heavier Things".
Would you be able to send me this song??
You'd think by now, I'd know the shape of calling home.
What a great song writer
sorry for your lost man! :-(
amazing. never listened to this version before. no way! I need this single, on no. I need all his albums. I need him :/
His voice gives me chills a lot of time.. goes straight to the heart.
i assume he plays guitar, at first staring very intently on the guitar as if he doesn't care about the world, only him and the music. then walks a beautiful blonde/brunette/red-head, whatever you like, and he looks up while sing "we are tracing, i hope you know" and smiles at the girl - no winking because that'd be rude. he stares into the girl and she hears his passion singing towards her. of course, after the sex he tells her "i mean, come on. it's not like we known ourselves that long."
how, bro? :)
Best artist ever. I love this song
BEST THING EVER, thank you that gave me a seriously amazing laugh and made my day
Could've been on Born and Raised. Should've. Bonus track, maybe? With some slide.
That was nicely done.
please... just let me cry... now...?
You're welcome, you're in my playlist ;)
When iTunes released the John Mayer Collection, I was SO hoping that this song would finally be available as a bonus track or something. I already bought the Bigger Than My Body CD single so I have it, but the John Mayer public REALLY needs to know this song. If any of John Mayer's lost songs needs to exposed more, it would be this one hands down.
Also when I saw him in Dallas in 2010, he performed this as part of a medley and I did backflips in my chair! JM, you're the best!
Thank you thank you for this. I had never heard it. I've just fell in love with him all over again.
dude...Its a cover of "I can be your hero" by 50 cent...dude
Nope, it's his own original song that was released in the EP Bigger than my Body, it's called Tracing as you can see in the title
Who dates a person named Regina?
he is just so good so wonderful
How come I've never heard this before??!! I like it.
Where can I get this at? I've never heard the studio version. I need to find this!
