John Mayer - 83 Lyrics
I've these dreams I'm
Walking home
Home when it used to be
And everything is
As it was
Here I stand
6 feet small
romanticizing years ago
it's a bitter sweet feeling hearing "Wrapped Around Your Finger" on the
radio
and these days
I wish I was 6 again
Oh make me a red cape
Oh, if only my life was more like
1983
all these things would be more like they were at the
start of me
had it made in 83
thinking bout my brother Ben
I miss him every day
He looks just like his brother John
But on an 18 month delay
Here I stand
6 feet small
and smiling cause I'm scared as hell
kind of like my life is like a sequel to a movie
where the actor's names have changed
oh well
well these days
I wish I was 6 again
Oh make me a red cape
I wanna be Superman
Oh, if only my life was more like
1983
all these things would be more like they were at the
start of me
If my life was more like
1983
I'd plot a course to the source of the purest little part of me
and most my memories
have escaped me
or confused themselves with dreams
if heaven's all we want it to be
send your prayers to me
care of 1983
you can paint that house a rainbow of colors
rip out the floorboards
replace the shutters but
that's my plastic in the dirt
whatever happened to my
whatever happened to my
whatever happened to my lunchbox
when came the day that it got
thrown away and don't you think I should have had some say
in that decision

So John Mayer, so true, when we are growing up that's how we feel deep down, but we try to appear "confident as hell"
My brother was born 83

Love this song
The song was amazing. But from 3:25 - 4:51 is definitely my favorite part of the song.. dammit John
Muito legal essa música . Mostra que todos temos máquinas do tempo dentro de nós, os que nos levam ao passado são as lembranças e os sonhos nos fazem ir ao futuro.
Nostalgia defined in a song
3:17-3:40 i love the instrumentals here my lord
Man I wonder what happened to my lunch box too! Bout to call my mam! I love this song.
I love new johns just as much as old John but old really hits home 🤷🏻♂️
This is probably the most beautiful and well written song I have ever heard recorded. Thank you Mr. Mayer for bringing me back to '83 ☺
I don't think people really believe it but this ENTIRE album is GREAT. Just give it a chance.
Hi April Shipp Hazuka.
Im reliving my high school days!❤️
Whatever happened to his lunch box?
3:32 Is my favorite part
My ex-wife and I discovered this album together. What a magical time. Alas...
John Mayer is like Jack Johnson’s level up 🤔
John Mayer is an enigma and an anomaly, he's part James Taylor, part Hendrix/ SRV and part Harry Chapin/ Don McLean
👍👍👍👍
I identify w this song prolly more than any other song i know
This song has always made me think of the innocence and nostalgia of my childhood, but after losing my older sister it is bittersweet to look back at those good old days. My sister was born in 1983 and died this year. My perception of this song will forever be changed because I will think about my sister, and the memories we once shared and will never get to reminisce about together again. Although "83" now reminds me of loss, it will keep my sister's memory alive because it will be impossible to not think of her and the memories we created when I hear it.
john always reminds me my objective that song always saving to be sadness "i wish i was six again" memorable:
Take me back to the early 2000's
“That’s my plastic in the dirt!”
so beautiful....
I would marry him and have all his babies!!!
Hes sexy as all and talented, coming from a black woman , hes amazing!!!! I gotta say some white boys are just soo sexy and wonderful!!!
Can you tell I love this song?
Most of my memories have escaped me, or have confused themselves with dreams...always loved that lyric.
2003 is relatively my 1983. ☺️
seriously tho what happened to my lunchbox...
Love love love to this day, more today than yesterday. Time flies
2:45 "Bigger than My Body" Vibes
bossa in John! ❤

leny andrea ortuste landivar but no drummer ever got nostalgic about that Police song ("Wrapped Around Your Finger"). Including Stewart Copeland.
nostalgic...his music stirs up emotions I've never felt before...quite a quality to be able to do that. I love/adore this man...
he's seriously unlike any other musician. His music is unique
so sad i only now discovered this gem.
Atleast you discovered it!
I grew up on this album. Everybody should check out Room for Squares imo Mayer's best album
Hah woozer. I changed the lyrics. I was born in '93
Better late than never

"Here I stand, six feet small" ..... So much imagery in a such a tiny sentenceJohn Mayer is a lyrical genius
Room for Squares, Continuum, Battle Studies
Esteban Rezarpi not his best those two folk albums are not very good
Joy L. My 3 favorites!! ❤
Joy L. YES, YES and YES
Born in raised has some of Johns best song writing imo
Hell yeah Joy!
2016 and still listening to his classic hits
2017 and still listening
2018 and still listening
I wish I was six again
This album is beautiful in every single way
I couldn't agree more
Scarlate M. is beautiful in every single way.
You are beautiful in every single way ♥️
bittersweet
This tune just grooves!
oh feel so good
Introspective but chilled out. Not trying too hard to bare his soul. I like it!
insidious
A good song warms a harte.
Where is THIS John Mayer? Come back, buddy.
his music is still good and filled with soul, its just different, i agree though because i prefer this style from him. much more nostalgic
I feel like John Mayer grows exponentially with each album. I love them all, but I do find myself listening to his older stuff more often. Maybe like someone else mentioned, it's a nostalgic thing. Some of my favorite individual songs come from his newer stuff tho, Born and Raised, Walt Grace, In the Blood. He's definitely my favorite solo artist of all time.
Hey do checkout his newest song, I Guess I Just Feel Like. Not old, but gold.
@Novranda Alifthari will do
Question is, where are you? He's been touring around the world. check his instagram, think he's in New York in a few days 🗽
I'd have to say 1963 for this to make sense for me. Lord I'm old.
For me, it's 2003
For me 2004 😂😂
Aww. "I wanna be superman" got me deep somehow, haha!
Such a great song with Nir Z on drums, always great DeLa on the Fender Jazz bass, Brandon Bush on organ, all under John's guitar and vocals. 15 years ago. Still sounds fresh today. Great songwriting. Great chord changes. Really good groove that just takes you along with it through the entire song and into the repeat and fade. Great pop music with signature John Mayer jazzy inflection. Very nice!
+brewer9565 I played keyboard and drums on this album

57fairlane but then, what # is this song?
That guy's a hell of a drummer. You can tell it's written on a 6 string. The drums go AROUND the acoustic guitar. Not stomping on them. Which works for some things, but not this. Easy to step on guitar players. You never want them to turn and look at you unless they're smiling their asses off.
Lots of that clicking in the verses w acoustic guitars (called cross stick or notated x-stick, also heard it called a knock in.CO). Then to 16ths on hats for the busier part.
1. "No Such Thing"
2. "Why Georgia"
3. "My Stupid Mouth"
4. "Your Body Is a Wonderland"
5. "Neon"
6. "City Love"
7. "83"
8. "3×5"
9. "Love Song for No One"
10. "Back to You"
11. "Great Indoors"
12. "Not Myself"
14. "St. Patrick's Day"
Curiouscreature99: you look like a who-uh. Are you a n love with John, you little twerp?
3:10 - a belch in the background? Gross.
Listen to 3:10-3:12 Just after "Send your prayers to me". (@curiouscreature99 screw you, you don't know me, deaf guy.)
No, I won't, because there is no belch, you fuckin moron.
+Jane Bang it's probably one of these: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ratchet_%28instrument%29
+Jane Bang Hahahaha that's funny, but there's no belch.
It's a vibra slap
With his music, John Mayer takes me to a place that no other musician has been able to bring me to.
to my knees - gravity
Climax?
Exactly how I feel.
My favourite song melodically and harmonically by John Mayer. That and "Neon".
So because you're Aussie, you have to spell things like an idiot?
+mike albert knew*
Everyone on this thread's living out their 1983 selves... smdh.
+Evelyn Kelly thats my point bitch...you understand what I was saying right? Many on u-tube would rather spell or grammar check every fucking word and miss what one is trying to say..you are a great example of that...bitch!
I'm TOTALLY with you!!!
I was 9 in 1983. So I grew up in the same era. And what happend to my Peanuts lunchbox?
Six feet small!
Of all the words in this song the lunch box being thrown has more significance with everyone . Thats beautiful :) .
Serendipity
It is just a introspective of him looking back into his childhood, and the carefree, responsibility-free world of A 6 year old.
Emmet The Otter I get the same feeling having been a kid during that period. He’s amazing
Crazy to think that this album debuted in 2001. God, where has the time gone?? Debuted in 2001...planned since '83. Ha!
LOVE this album!
This song is about his childhood. The phrase ``whatever happened to my luchbox´´ I think symbolizes his school days.
@Ford CruZ Definitely bro has reminiscent theme to it. No Such Thing about (High School) 83 about (Childhood). Great album
@Ford CruZ Well no shit sherlock
+Ford CruZ I always thought it was a symbol of innocence
He goes into his "plastic in the dirt" and "oh make me a red cape," so yeah...
My all time favorite Mayer song.
Great sound!
"Plot a course to the source of the Purest little part of me"
Now that's nice rhyming and alliteration.
Such a great song!
"i wish i was six again" :,)
Whatever happened to my lunchbox
Love this song, it reminds me of years past.
It refers to John Mayer wondering what happened to his childhood.
``whatever happened to my luchbox´´. the wirdest sentance of a John Mayer song ever.
one of my fav!
Love this song
