John Martyn - Sapphire Lyrics
I watch the day go down
Sapphire
I watch my luck turn round
A high flyer
I threw my bones around
I watch the current run
Live wire
Clear blue
Too true
Clear blue
Too true
I don't know what to do
I got no place to go
Oh the day I lost my sweet Sapphire
There's nothing left to trust
Oh the days I'll miss sweet Sapphire
I saw her running round
Sweet liar
And I ran the garden path
Sweet briar
I did just what I could
So tired
I threw my keys away
With no desire
Clear blue
Too true
I don't know what to do
I got no place to go
Oh the days I miss sweet Sapphire
My precious gems are dust
There's nothing left to trust
Oh the days I'll miss sweet Sapphire
I got no place to go
I don't know what to do
Ooh, the dream about Sapphire
I don't know what to do
I got nowhere to go
I got no face to show without Sapphire
My precious gems are dust
There's nothing left to trust
Oh since the day I lost my sweet Sapphire
There's nothing I can trust
My precious gems are dust
Oh, the day I lost sweet Sapphire
I don't know what to do
I don't know where to go
Oh the day I lost my sweet Sapphire

John Martyn Sapphire Comments
This song is a appropriate for me. As I call my lovely bride Sapphire.
Ed Sheeran views in the millions.. Here John Martyn gets 4.2 k. Go figure. I know who is the true artist. The true musician. The true genius.
I turned on a college radio station in Toronto one afternoon in the late 80's when I was 18 years old and hear the tail end of this song when the chorus was repeating. It went straight to my soul as some of the most deeply passionate singing of some of the most haunting lyrics I had ever heard. I scrambled and grabbed a cassette recorder, put it next to my clock radio and recorded the last 20 seconds or so which I played over and over again. The DJ never came back on and said the name of the song or the artist. For the next 31 years, that 20 second tape recording was all I had. I had tried to find the song on the Internet through lyric searches once in a while over that time but no luck. Today, my quest has been fulfilled and I couldn't be happier. Thanks for posting this neglected gem! (Pun entirely intended!)
I know the feeling! Good man - well done.
