John Martyn - In Search Of Anna Lyrics

She came to me so young and free, and put her arms around me
She said that she would always stay, with me until my dying day
We grew up in a dirty town, where they like to kick you when you're down
If you show an easy side, they twist the knife and open you wide

Oh Anna, oh Anna

Remember how you cried when I bought a gun. I've never been one to turn and run
Everybody's got to have a dream to help them make it down the stream
If they cannot chain or buy you... you know they'll try to crucify you
Now I'm out here on the road, thinking about my way back home

Oh Anna, oh Anna

We had a dream that didn't last, like a fly in amber I'm trapped in the past
Stay on your feet in this human race, you think about a lover or a special place
Lost you somewhere down the road now I hear you singing when I'm all alone
You're the only one, makes me feel this way... keep on searching for you every day

Oh, Anna, oh Anna
Oh, Anna, oh Anna

John Martyn In Search Of Anna Comments

Haven't visited this post for a while so FWIW John didn't write the lyrics .....this was a song about a woman called Jane who was one of my first loves and also I used elements of the film. The Director of the film In Search of Anna, had written the script about his own lost lover and as MD of the film I wrote the lyrics about mine. Small Hours was an instrumental that John put down for the film soundtrack and we cobbled together my lyrics with his music. In his live renditions of this song he blended some of his Small Hours lyrics with the Anna lyrics. I remember him fondly and when I perform I often do my own version of this song as well as May You Never..... I still have quite a number of the tracks we recorded for the film and also a gig he did in Sydney before leaving. We tried to get them released way back as an album but the logistics were overly confusing with a number of UK people squabbling over it .... so it never happened.

Unbelievable to find & hear, after all these years! I actually did the final mix of this track in 1978 at United Sound Studios in Sydney, Australia. The other side had no drums & bass, which I much preferred. It had more 'air' & 'realism', so to speak! Shame that I've lost that master. Paul Radcliffe. I'm on FB, if you have queries as to how the song was done. The man was a brilliant Composer/Performer!

"I hear you singing when I'm all alone", what a line ... thought this was about his second wife, the love of his life, who was killed in a car crash. Don't know anything for sure mind. Check out Tree Green if you're bored people.

Hi Ned...If you read 5 above you'll see that this is the single version but with a bit of tweaking that I did about 10 years ago for my own satisfaction. ...and yes i've got a few copies of the single which I intend to keep safe. I was always hoping that one day the song would get some kind of recognition, so good old Youtube is making it posssible.... Cheers Michael Norton

Sorry I posted it twice MN

I wondered when this would hit youtube.... I wrote the lyrics and produced this track for the film In Search of Anna back in the 70's....but it isn't exactly the version that was released on the single back in"78. .
I was never satisfied with the mix of the single so I found the lead break from a previous rough mix of the song and laid it over the vinyl mix. I also put a couple of synth fx in just before the solo comes in underneath the tympani, there's also an extended ending just coz, I could

As a JM fan here in Oz I am always on lookout for this somewhere..and I have never heard this version..*what a find* !! So, thank you very, very much for this...it's made my day..absolutely. This 'sister' of small hours sees JM starting to shine on electric guitar -and *that voice* anall' . He also did some great live performances of it (eg NY 83). Thanks once again !
