John Martyn - Don't Think Twice It's Alright Lyrics
It ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
If you don't know by now
It ain't no use to sit and wonder why, baby
It just don't matter anyhow
When the rooster crows at the break of dawn
You're the reason that I'm travelling on
Don't think twice, it's all right
It ain't no use you calling out my name, girl
Like you never done before
It ain't no use you calling out my name, girl
I just can't hear you any more
I wish there was something that you might do or say
To make me change my mind and stay
We never did too much talking anyway
It ain't no use you turning on your light, babe
The light that I never knew
It ain't no use you turning on your light, baby
'Cause I'm on the dark side of the road
Well, I'm not saying that you treated me unkind
You could have done better, I just don't mind
You just kind of wasted my precious time
Don't think twice, it's all right
I'm walking down my long lonesome road, babe
Where I'm bound I can't tell
Goodbye is too good a word, baby
So I'll just say Fare thee well
I'm thinking and I'm wondering all the way down the road
I once loved a woman, a child I'm told
I gave her my heart but she wanted my soul
Don't think twice
Don't think twice
Don't think twice, it's all right

Beautiful.
This album made me take up guitar, love you mr Martyn my fellow Glaswegian!!
Jameson Crested . God bless ya John.
Great take on one of my favorite Dylan classics. You can really feel his life history come through in this one. God bless ya John! You are one in a millennium!!!
Embarrassingly bad.
Wow. Just amazing.
This is the only time John finished second best. Yet what a brilliant second best. I wonder if Zimme has heard this?
Although I’ve been away so many lonely nights.....
i wonder has sufjan stevens been influenced by john martyn's fingerpicking style here. on "carrie and lowell". great cover.
My opinion, mine only, better than Bob's. Sorry if I upset any one.
Why does one have to be "better"? Just enjoy both.
Nimlin Munro It’s not a competition....without Bob the song doesn’t exist
No argument Nimlin...I agree. Show Bob how to do the Job. LOL. Go get em, buddy.
orribile versione
bought this album when it came out .saw him live a couple of times back then
saw his last tour as well. and in between.
leaves a tear in the eyes. genius
Great Cover !!!
"We never did too much talking anyway...." how many relationships end that way. Dylan was 21 when he wrote this so mature....Martyn not much older when he covered it.Perfect song from a perfect composer sung by the great Martyn....I love this song and recording....I miss John Martyn so much.....saw him live many times. Felt really sad when he died.
Well said my friend.....I'm going thru stuff right now...and this song is helping
Brilliant stuff. Love his take on music. Seen him live, and he's even better live. He was a great performer.
I guess this isn't blocked for you, aah i need to hear this :(
+Bballbunny10 I'm in Scotland mate. If he was blocked here, there would be a riot ;)
amen john.
What a wonderful easy tempo--So sweet
Great song.
Always turn to john when I'm drunk.
got a reputation for that, hard to shake.
hahahaha.............you old softy
Beautiful just beautiful
Sure this is John Martyn ... Sounds like Ralph McTell (Streets album)....
I think a lot of those folk singer/guitarists that congregated in the same part of London around that time sounded a bit like this; it also sounds quite Bert Jansch-y (eg Strolling Down the Highway).
3:42 the woman was his ex wife. She said she divorced him because he put all of his emotion into his music and there was none left for her. Now, here he says, "I once loved a woman... I gave her my heart but she wanted my soul."
Trina Bean this is a Bob Dylan song he covered.
This album was released in 1967 when presumably he and Beverley were happy in each other's company. Indeed, on his '75 release Sunday's Child several songs make reference to his young family. Just a few years on, however, his addiction to drink and drugs eventually led to his marriage break up. When I met him in '79 he was a very troubled soul. His 1980 release Grace and Danger is his account of the break up.
Still Miss The Big Man..........................
@*****
Hope he makes it on...
Its like a hole in yer heart.
The best Don't Think Twice cover I've ever heard.
exactly! even more beautiful than nick drake's take. sounds so jolly and carefree to me.
There use to sit down and wonder why like you never done before.. Don't think twice it's alright..
Having one of those days... I was supposed to go to a braai (barbeque), but my Spirit told me no ! You know, things you're supposed to do, but "don;t want to do" ! Well, "Don't think twice it's Alright" came to mind.... Bye the way, all you guys who dig John Martyn as much as I do, keep your eye peeled for the Tribute to John Martyn, called "Johnny Boy would Love This !". Just got it & it's bloomin' Great !" 2 cds & a DVD. One complaint. Just like John's life here, it's "too short !"
Sounds so like Nick drake there.
I know he knew him but I never heard his influence like that before.
Wow,
Luv and Peace.
This song has been covered so many times over the years, but trust John Martyn to reveal the true beauty and almost unbearable sadness in it.
Hadn't heard this before but just shows what talent JM had. Miss him loads.
What a great version.
