John Mark McMillan - The Road, The Rocks, And The Weeds Lyrics

Come down from the stars
Show your human scars
Tell me what it's like to believe
Through my Christ haunted thoughts
That the losses you bought
Are the nights that you peopled with your dreams
Well, I've got no answers
For heartbreaks or cancers
But a Savior who suffers them with me
Singing goodbye, Olympus
The heart of my Maker
Is spread out on the road, the rocks, and the weeds

Come down from your mountain
Your high-rise apartment
And tell me of the God you know who bleeds
And what to tell my daughter
When she asks so many questions
And I fail to fill her heaviness with peace
When I've got no answers
For hurt knees or cancers
But a Savior who suffers them with me
Singing goodbye, Olympus
The heart of my Maker
Is spread out on the road, the rocks, and the weeds

And Aphrodite would not weep
Nor Zeus would suffer for the weak
But have you come to stand inside my pain?
And all the things I've begged you for
Eternity and evermore
Are hidden with me here beneath the rain
The Rain

So shall I plant sequoias
And revel in the soil
Of a crop I know I'll never live to reap?
Then sow my body to my Maker
And my heart unto my savior
And spread me on the road, the rocks, and the weeds
Spread me on the road

Thank you for this song. God spoke to me throughout this lyrics before my mom was diagnosed with cancer and now I listen to it as a reminder of His fatherly comforting hands! God bless

What's the meaning of "the heart of my Maker is spread out on the road, the rocks, and the weeds?" I don't get it but really want to!

    I.... M....

It reminds me of the Parable of the Sower in Matthew 13...

“A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. Whoever has ears, let them hear.”

I think it's meant to express that God is different from the other gods, like the Greek gods, who lived on Mount Olympus. With those gods you had to climb up to meet him. But the God of the Bible comes down, mingling with our everyday lives, sorrows, and reality. And this is expressed in the road, the rocks, and the weeds.

I last saw JMM in the fall of 2018 in Chicago at the Bottom Lounge w MM &TB and TM. JM looked tired and the tour had just started; it worried me. Here, JM seems to have found rest physically and spiritually. His craft is honest and there is no edge to it; no, it is even worshipful. Love this man.

This is a banger. Playing this song on repeat and praying that I might plant sequoias. What an incredible picture these lyrics paint

What does he mean by spread on the road, the rock and the weeds? Like his blood was spread?

    s.... ....

I believe that lyric is based on the Parable of the Sower and possibly the Parable of the Weeds. These are teachings of Jesus that can be read in Matthew 13.

The road, the rock, and the weeds represent our hearts and the variations of it. Particularly, hearts are at a hard place. Though the road, rocks, and weeds are not the best environment for the seeds to sprout, the farmer still sows. In the same way, Jesus gives his love to each of us even if our hearts are disbelieving, worrisome, and distracted. What a wonderful mystery to know that Jesus does not leave us in our weaknesses but joins us in our sufferings.

Just as Jesus loves us unconditionally, we too should plant seeds of His love in hard places.

Thank you JMM for being the vessel that pours into so many lives.

I love the depth of the lyrics, and the brokenness and humility of the message that manages to point to the supremacy of God.
"So shall I plant sequoias and revel in the soil of a crop I know I‘ll never live to reap? Then sow my body to my maker and my heart unto my Savior… and spread me on the road, the rocks, and weeds."
John Mark McMillan, there's such depth and wisdom in your art. I love how much of it appears to be hidden from people's first glances. The first listen catches my attention. It's the second, third, and subsequent listens, for me, is where the good stuff really shines.
Your art is worth an investment of time, to discover the deeper things hidden in it.
    I'm thankful for it.

We are obviously on the same journey! This spoke right to the very things I cried out to God about this past week. Thank you.

I am a Vicar sat at my computer working on a Eulogy for someone in my Parish who has died and this came to my attention. Your lyrics continue to be bold, honest and open recognising the wrestles we face, but the reality of a loving God thanks for all you do and for staying true to your calling!

So excited that you are releasing new work. You nailed all of it in these words. Loving the candid, simplistic beauty of this video and this young lady's personal spiritual expression: that is the most precious to God. God bless you, Brother.

"When I've got no answers, for hurt knees or cancers..." I was really touched by your lyrics man. I'm not a believer, but I really appreciate your art and the way that you communicate the idea that God could be suffering with us. So beautiful.

    G.... R....

That's a very good perspective Gilbert. I am a believer, but you helped me see something I hadn't noticed before. Thank you for that.

    Pls Read John 3:16..

Thanks Gilbert. I was struck by the image of Jesus being born a helpless baby. Slimey with placenta and blood. Having an umbilical cord to his mother. This Christmas it hit me hard. It's amazing actually

John is really good at presenting who Jesus really is. Chokes me up every time.
