John Mark McMillan - Bright Abyss Lyrics

We spark off
Glitter into the night
Hours before dawn's recurring light
So comes the abyss
But the abyss, she is bright
Whoever told you there was something wrong with you like you just weren't right
Whoever said that there was something missing deep down inside your life
Whoever told you that you needed something that you didn't have
Made you feel like you were fractured and your head was bad

We break off
Flicker into the dark
Dim on the rim of our story arc
Running to the abyss
But the abyss, she is ours
Didn't anyone ever tell you that you's a dream of god
And you live your whole life suspended in the great beyond
Even science says we were made from the dust of the dying stars
So does that mean when heaven dies that it comes to us

Over and over again
Ah, oh, oh, oh
Ah, oh, oh, over and over, my friend
Ah, oh, oh, oh
...

    Get it!

This is even better watching it on a big computer. Those jazz shoes are legit, man. Jazz feet. This is JOY! Made me bubble with laughter while making cheesy eggs for my daughter one morning. You're a joy to follow, JMM!

This song has grown on me

It literally has grown on me! It's freaky, especially in public places!

  6. J.... G....

It isn’t a bad song, but I definitely like The Road, The Rocks and The Weeds much more. The lack of structure makes it hard to get into. And the whole minute of “Ahhhh, ohhhh” just feels like filler without any relation to the rest of the song. If the song had a proper chorus, there might be more replay value.

    Not that my opinion matters.

what a graceful star! love it!

Wow. Oh my goodness. That is incredible songwriting; absolute truth in a poignant metaphor. Christianity needs more people who think like this.

Jacob Sargent I’m not quite sure that I understand the metaphor. Love the song, but what does he mean “so does that mean when heaven dies that it comes to us”?

    J.... S....

@Christian Reynolds The metaphor is of something higher than us coming down to meet us, instead of making us rise to attain it. So just as it can be said scientifically that we are made of the dust of dying stars, so it is spiritually true that the death of heaven (Christ's death in the past) brings heaven (the kingdom of God both present and future) into human experience.

Good song and I love that it was recorded at your house. I realized how much Jesse's drums added to your sound though in previous albums :(

Heavily influenced by Bon Iver's music videos and I love it! I know JMM is a big fan. It's great to see JMM jump out of his comfort zone to tell his story.

We will see you in April in San Antonio!

That's what I came here to say! Also, the outfit had me thinking he was wearing a straight jacket that he got loose from. I love JMM!

“Didn’t anyone ever tell you that you’re a dream of God, and you’ve spent your whole life suspended in the great beyond?” “Bright Abyss” is a phrase inspired by poet Christian Wiman and a message to my younger self. It’s a love letter to my children who are like me, and anyone who’s ever been terrorized by self doubt and the unknown. “Whoever told you there was something wrong with you, and you just weren’t right? Whoever told you there was something missing deep down inside your life?” My friend, don’t you know that you’re a miracle?
