You're right. For me, the slightly out of tune piano gives it a nice nostalgic feel. I can't describe it. Just like out of tune versions of Chopin give me the creeps and add to the intensity. Doesn't work with every piece of course...😂

Lennon had his next three albums already planned when he was killed from what I read. He had a whole bag of songs he'd been filling up prior to going back to the studio. Very well could have been included, we'll never know, but considering the numerous takes and iterations he made of this in his last years you'd think it would have been used. All I know is the Threatles butchered it

Absolutely spot on!! I was just listening to this and said to my wife that this song never got past the demo stage. Which is tragic, but also beautiful. Like the whistle at the end of sittin on a dock of a bay. It's in completion as it's most beautiful. If you don't know what I'm on about, google it. Tragic for both songwriters, but still just lovely.

The intro to this piece is Pseudo-classical, giving the piece a timeless feel. The piano chords then just provide rythm so you can focus on what he says. This changes when he says "seems like all I really was doing" which is followed by an ascending progression which acts as a build up after which he switches to a gospel motif. GOSPEL! The effect this gives is to imbue his next line with a sense of divine revelation when he says that his whole life, all he'd been doing, was waiting for her, waiting for love. It's a really inspired songwriting trick that makes this song really something special. I write songs yet I've never seen anything like it.
