John Lennon - I Know (I Know) Lyrics

The years have passed so quickly
One thing I've understood
I am only learning
To tell the trees from wood

I know what's coming down
And I know where it's coming from
And I know and I'm sorry (yes I am)
But I never could speak my mind

And I know just how you feel
And I know now what I have done
And I know and I'm guilty
But I never could speak my mind

I know what I was missing
But now my eyes can see
I put myself in your place
As you did for me

Today I love you more than yesterday
Right now I love you more right now

Now I know what's coming down
I can feel where it's coming from
And I know it's getting better all the time
As we share in each other's minds

Today, I love you more than yesterday
Right now, I love you more right now

Ooo, no more crying
Ooo, no more crying
Ooo, no more crying
Ooo, no more crying

Both Paul and Yoko had the marked habit of frequently appending their statements with "ya know?"Maybe Lennon is responding to both of them.

  5. R.... M....

This is a masterpiece of a song...:)

  6. K.... A....

Some compare this to 'I've got a feeling' but what's strange is that I heard a recording of John playing a song very similar to 'I've got a feeling' in demos from 1968. I wonder if Paul heard John playing that song.

  7. H.... C....

John  stole this song's beginning from Paul's (and John's) I've Got A Feeling.

  8. H.... ....

    A love song to Paul

  9. C.... H....

I’ve had this song stuck in my head for days now but couldn’t remember the name

  10. N.... P....

Another thought is that its about Yoko mostly but the Paul McCartney references lyrically and musically were to make an artistic statement that he was putting the Beatles behind him and focusing all his love on Yoko and he was comparing his artistic collaborator Yoko to his prior one Paul in the importance of their work together. It was probably also an answer to Let Me Roll in It which came out earlier in the year and was about Paul's feelings about John and mimicked his musical style. John mimicked the song on Beef Jerky a year later on Walls and Bridges.

    N.... P....

Some people are really invested in the JohnandYoko ballad. I'm sure that Yoko was never completely unpresent at this time, but I personally have no doubt the song is very, very, mainly to Paul. The I've Got A Feeling hook. The "Getting Better." "Yesterday." "I know, I know" is what John and Paul said to each other when they did one particular acid trip together, face to face, as they tried to read each others' minds. This song is like a direct message, not even coded. John was very conscious of his own lyrics (he fell for Allen Klein partly because Klein could quote them) and very conscious of Paul's songs as well, and the words are not coincidental. IMHO.

    N.... P....

@K B Im not invested in anything, you guys are reading too much into it. I think its about Yoko, Paul but more about the state of the whole counterculture movement. And lastly if you bothered to listen to the album rather than pirating I Know off You Tube you'd know that several songs off Mind Games were about her and in a couple he mentions her by name in a couple. And did you see of cover of Mind Games? Yoko's picture is on the cover in the distance like a mountain. So hell yeah she was in his thoughts and the separation was her idea not his. But it matured John and allowed him to become a proper husband and father. Lastly his songs were many times about more than one thing. I'm not talking about thus anymore you guys just play guessing games rather than researching the song or the histories and don't even listen to the whole album.

    N.... P....

Wow, some people are really invested making assumptions about what other people know or what they have in their brains, too! Awesome. Roger, over and out.

    N.... P....

@K B No I don't know all you know but you didn't seem to know the stuff about the album I mentioned before because if you did you'd know Yoko was at the forefront of John's thoughts in 73. Anyway I wasn't talking just about you. Most people that have commented on I Know don't seem to be familiar with Beatle and Lennon history by their comments. Anyway I'm done, think what you want. Over and out is right

Actually, over the time people have realized that this is such as great album with brilliant arrangements of the songs and beautiful solo guitar parts by Spinozza. Otherwise, very underrated album at the time were issued.

"I put myself in YOUR place." -- That is the Golden Rule, many tens of thousands of years old, as taught by Jesus and many before him. It works in your daily life, in all things. Try it. Try it in your consciousness, all day long. It works.
Jesus put the supreme introspection moral twist on it. It was not "do unto others as they DO unto you," but, rather,

"Do unto others as you would HAVE THEM do unto you!"

En éste LP Lennon lo hizo todo: Músicos de estudio y él sólo, sin un productor, y se nota. Podría haber sido un LP grandioso, pero pasó casi desaparcibido. Solo su genialidad hace que esas estupendas composiciones se salven.

Someone who notices the crazy bass line in this song? I mean, 2:35 is absolutely amazing.

    A.... A....

Axel Axelsson it's solid and to be honest, the bass throughout the whole song is so prominent and adds such a beauty to the song. Bass never gets the recognition it deserves in songs

    A.... A....

This is the only album in which Lennon employed the R&B bassist Gordon Edwards. The bass playing on the entire album is a highlight no doubt. Edwards also played on quite a bit of Yokos mid 70s stuff

My favorite Mclennon song. Take notice the riff at the beginning and throughout is intended to be "I've got a feeling", a Paul song.

The line of "I know what I was missing" is John's response to a lyric in Paul McCartney's, 'Dear Boy.' He believed that the line of, "I hope you never know, dear boy, how much you missed," was for him.

"Today, I love you more than yesterday," is a hint at the song, 'Yesterday.'

What really shows that John made this for Paul was an EXACT reference to another Paul song, which was, "And I know it's getting better (all the time)"

Which, if you couldn't tell was based from the song "Getting Better" (John has actually made another reference of Getting Better in Beautiful Boy.)

I suppose you could call this an apology or love song John made for Paul. They truly did love each other. I just had to debunk some of the lyrics, mostly to show how much Lennon loved McCartney.
My thoughts on it, is simply beautiful. So powerful agh

    u.... 0....

They both wrote Getting Better although Paul write the Getting Better all the time part but I see your point on the rest. However its mostly about Yoko like 90% of Lennon's songs were. The thing is John's songs are almost never about one thing.

    u.... 0....

I just listened to this song closer than I ever had and I realized something. I had originally thought it was about Yoko mostly and also a little about society in general like a lot of Lennon's lyrics. Then I believed what you said about there being a lot about Paul in it. Well after listening to it I think its mostly about John's optimism that the changes that he always wanted to happen were coming to fruition and they would continue into the future. Also he was saying that he was too quick to criticize others and wasn't looking behavior enough hence the line "I'm only learning to tell the trees from wood". It was also about how he relates to Yoko and he was making apply to his relationships with people in general. Lastly I think he was kind of talking about Paul in a way where in the past he was too quick to dismiss the Beatles and especially Paul's work with them as light and frivolous and Paul's solo stuff as well and was realizing he was harsh. Hence the riffs from I've got a Feeling. He also parodied I've got a Feeling because he was optimistic of the future like I said before. The Getting Better reference was also for his hope for the future and a nod to Paul. With the Yesterday and What I'm missing you may have been reading to much in it because those are pretty general terms but the Yesterday could've been a reference to How Do You Sleep off Imagine where he attacked Paul and it was a way of saying he was too harsh on him. I think together we may have solved but who knows, Lennon was very complicated.

    u.... 0....

    @Oledengamle
I read your comment, heard the song in my head, and have to say that you're almost right. However, it's not the verses but rather the choruses of "I Know" that sound like "Hey Jude".
    "Hey Jude/don't make it bad/
Take a sad song/and make it better"
    =
    "And I know/what's comin' down/
And I know where/it's comin' from"

    u.... 0....

    Other references -

Paul (When I'm 64): "When I get older, losing my hair, many years from now..."
John: "The years have passed so quickly."

John: "...I am only learning to tell the trees from the wood."
Paul (The Pound Is Sinking): "...it's evidently clear that you can't see the trees for the forest."

John: "...And I know just how you feel..."
Paul (Somebody Who Cares): "...and I know how you feel..."

Paul (What You're Doing): "Look what you're doing."
John: "...and I know now all I have done..."

John: "I put myself in your place as you did for me."
[This is a reference to John posing with a pig like Paul posed with a sheep, then Paul putting a pastoral scene on the cover of 'Wild Life' after John did the same for the cover of 'Plastic Ono Band'.]

    John: "Oooo, no more crying."
Paul (Try Not To Cry): "Try not to cry."

Yeah, and "I know, I know" is what they said to each other when they did the staring-into-each-others'-souls acid trip.

I love Mind Games & Walls and remember when they played the last part of MG side 2. MG, one of the best ex-Beatles albums. Totally unterrated. - I remember going downtown to the biggest shopping-center in Esbjerg, Denmark in 1973 with my mother. Mind Games always laid on the grammophone in a furniture store (which was a part of the center) for a year. Later the vinyl was replaced by "Walls & Bridges". regards, Peter Thomsen, Denmark.

    A.... ....

@uku 000 She's talking about John and Yoko's relationship as the album cover depicts an overwhelmingly large Yoko behind a minuscule John. Showing how the focus was on Yoko and John was controlled by him, I think...
