John Hiatt - Buffalo River Home Lyrics

I've been taking off and landing
But this airport's closed
And how much thicker this fog is gonna get
God only knows
Just when you think that you've got a grip
Reality sneaks off, it gives you the slip
As if you ever knew what it was
Takin' you down the lime

Tearing through the cotton fields and bus shelters
Of the South runnin' helter skelter
Down through the Mississippi Delta
With no place to call your own
Mixing up drinks with mixed feeling
All along the paint was peeling
Down to an Indian blanket on a pony
With no rider in the flesh and bone
Lookin' for his buffalo river home

I've been circling the wagons
Down at Time Square
Trying to fill up this hole in my soul
But nothing fits there
Just when you think you can let it rip
You're pounding the pavement in your daddy's wingtips
As if you had someplace else to go
Or a better way to get there

Tearing through the cotton fields and bus shelters
Of the South runnin' helter skelter
Down through the Mississippi Delta
With no place to call your own
Mixing up drinks with mixed feeling
All along the paint was peeling
Down to an Indian blanket on a pony
With no rider in the flesh and bone
Lookin' for his buffalo river home

Now there's only two things in life
But I forget what they are
It seems we're either hangin' on a moonbeam's coattails
Or wishing on stars
Just when you think that you've been gyped
The bearded lady comes and does a double back flip
And you run off and join the circus
Yeah you just let that pony ride

Tearing through the cotton fields and bus shelters
Of the South runnin' helter skelter
Down through the Mississippi Delta
With no place to call your own
Mixing up drinks with mixed feeling
All along the paint was peeling
Down to an Indian blanket on a pony
With no rider in the flesh and bone
Lookin' for his buffalo river home
Lookin' for his buffalo river home

I like the sound they get but his voice is not that good but it does match the sound he's getting

  2. L.... M....

This video was filmed in 1994 and I'm actually in it for a few seconds at 3:24 the girl on the left in the white sweater. I was 24 at the time and I so miss these times!

  3. P.... D....

Saw the man in Manchester UK, 20ish years ago. Great gig.

Put this on my walkman 20 yrs ago to listen to on holiday with my kids, they still love the tracks from Perfectly good guitar , to this day ,now that's education

I heard this song Live four (count 'em, *four!* ) times on the Perfectly Good Guitar tour, with Mike Ward on guitar. As much as I love Ry Cooder and Sonny Landreth and David Immergluck and some of the other great folks who have played with John over the years, it was one hell of a band he had here, known as The Guilty Dogs ("I did it!) on that tour. This song was fantastic live, and Mike Ward's slide guitar break and solo on "Thank You Girl" was one of the most insane over-the-top phenomenal slide guitar moments I've ever heard. (I have it on tape, as one of the show's was broadcast on local radio and a friend taped it for me). I took my new girlfriend to the 3rd (and fourth) show I attended on that tour, and I think she fell in love with John Hiatt at the same approximate time she was falling in love with me! She has been a huge fan ever since. She tried to get tickets *today* for the upcoming tour of John Hiatt and Lyle Lovett, but all the good seats at the closest theater were already sold out, except for the seats in the nosebleed section. Our old eyes don't work that well at a distance, and anyway the timing would be problematic for her work schedule , so I guess we won't be able to see him this time around. Bummer!

  30. A.... B....

    Let that pony ride.

  31. T.... H....

    This song is SO phillosphical...

  32. W.... C....

My mom's family survived the Great Depression on 40 acres in northeastern Arkansas next to Buffalo slough. Every time I hear this song it takes me there and it's 1933, now that's Americana.  Grandpa built the house on the 40 acres himself.  All that from a 4 minute, 35 second song, all of his music is like that.

  33. W.... J....

    2 people with no taste.

  34. j.... c....

    I have found it :-)

  35. A.... D....

From "perfectly good guitar" 1983. Superb!!! marvellous!!!

    A.... D....

Right!!! I'll repair the mistake immediately

    A.... D....

    fantastic song writer

  36. A.... K....

In a subtle and humble manner, he's the antithesis of the Hollyweird. He's a bard for the ages.

  37. C.... C....

God, I love visiting Hiatt's videos. No vitriol, just love.

  38. m.... v....

We play this track as part of our set and the good people of the UK love it. The melody is evocative and the beat is beguiling so even folks who have never heard it, love this track - best wishes, Mike from The Hicksville Band

  39. O.... G....

this is some of the best music in current times

    B.... ....

  47. R.... S....

For what it's worth now, this song has been out there all along on the underrated "Perfectly Good Guitar" album. Just one more absolute gem from Hiatt that never got enough notice. Great to find it here.

  48. J.... C....

I can't believe I found this song on here...thank-you so much for putting it up. I absolutely LOVE this song and can never find it and no one seems to know it. Buffalo River Home...I have always felt a connection to the girl he is singing about; I think I am that girl! (But what girl doesn't, right?)

  49. B.... G....

I looked for this song from the mid 90s. At one point one person told me it must be Bob Dylan. What a joke.

  50. t.... ....

    @Kulardenu My sentiments exactly

  51. s.... ....

I have ALWAYS loved this song!!!! Thanks for the vid :-)

  52. S.... E....

@ShortiSnappin Good for you! Stand your ground....you are the one who should be laughing at them. This music will stand the test of time, theirs will be forgotten.

  53. K.... ....

One of the few songs in the world & can listen to over & over. Hands down John Hiatt is America's greatest songwriter!

    K.... ....

    AMEN!!! And Nashville agrees!

  54. p.... ....

John Hiatt is such a great musician. He's amazing!

  56. A.... ....

Man, i'm 52 years old and just recentlly discovered this guy. I think iI missed alot.
    His music is great!

  57. M.... P....

How could two idiots dislike this!? HOW!?!

    M.... P....

Who does not like this song, along with the rest of his huge catalogue have no taste, and aren't intelligent enough to understanding it!
He's our hometown jewel here in Nashville.

  58. J.... ....

@realnmakebeileve no it doesnt get any better than this
this lyric has stuck in my head since the firdt time i ever heard
    it

that ' dub bul bac flip' each syllable on the beat

if i had a dollar for every john hiatt 'moment' in songs the guy's done
i dont know where the guy comes up w/ not just the lyric but the nuances
    in performing them

it's audio artwork tho no doubt

  59. T.... ....

mixing up drinks with mixed feelings

    T.... ....

One of my favorite lines too. I hope you get to see him live...it further proves what a genius he is.

  60. a.... ....

@orsiorsi186 This video came out in 1993, the child would be much older now.

  61. a.... ....

I remember seeing this in fairly heavy rotation on CMT back when it came out. Yes, CMT used to play more than the same 20 songs (not to mention non-musical programming. What's up with that?). Getting bought out by MTV was the WORST thing to ever happen to CMT.

  62. E.... S....

that kid must have been crying frome the sheer epicness of John Hiat in person

  63. B.... G....

An Indian blanket on a pony, with no rider in the flesh and bone. I've seen it in this Land of Enchantment.

  64. B.... G....

An Indian blanket on a pony, with no rider in the flesh and bone. I've seen it in thie Land of Enchantment.

  65. d.... ....

@dbciii i am right there with you on that dbcii.

  66. B.... ....

    @ShortiSnappin

You have really exceptional taste. Hey, I'm 33 and I was about your age when I got into John Hiatt too.

Don't worry. John Hiatt and Stever Earle will still be highly regarded long after Kanye West and Rhianna are gone.

    B.... ....

    YESSSSS!!!

  67. p.... ....

@ShortiSnappin Kid, you are our hope for the future.

  68. A.... C....

@ShortiSnappin Hiatt's a recipient of the AMA's Lifetime Achievment Award in songwriting. Your parents are wise. Quality endures.

  69. I.... ....

just floated the Buffalo river yesterday and we did see some pretty sweet old homes, front porches, horses.

  70. e.... ....

@ShortiSnappin Your parents have very good taste, but you need to listen to Delbert McClinton and Robert Cray too.

  71. m.... c....

    Bobby George without the bling.
    Great song though.

  72. J.... ....

    Just let that pony ride!

  73. J.... ....

My God! One of my 5 favourite Hiatt tunes of all time! I never knew this one was released as a single. It's incredible that songs like these don't sell a million/billion times. But it's great to see that at least it is much appreciated by his fans. John is one of the best!

  74. a.... ....

Having owned the cassette (ask your parents) since it was released, I can testify that it IS "mixing up drinks, with mixed feelings". The repetition is intentional, when done right (as it is here) it enhances the meaning. When done wrong (as it so often is) it just sounds clunky.

  75. J.... T....

Reminds me a little of Tom waits. Love it!

  76. t.... ....

mr. hiatt's best songs, and there are several, stand alone

  77. S.... ....

    here on youtube..

  78. e.... ....

anyone have or know where i can see tenessee plates?

    e.... ....

right here on you tube, just got done listening to it, a little faster than the version that I like tho.

  79. e.... ....

as mobetta56 sd, i am pretty sure it is mixing up drinks with mixed feelings

  80. R.... H....

John Hiatt Rocks. So to speak

  81. J.... F....

Rock on, John. Very few people paint a picture with words as well as John Hiatt.

  82. m.... c....

I love the music but the video is shocking

  83. M.... S....

We're mixing up drinks with mixed feelings. . .god, I love John Hiatt! This is one of my favorite Hiatt songs. How could you not love "there's only two things in life, but I forget what they are"?

  84. C.... ....

Our man John is a special talent with an amazing ability to paint a picture with words in a way that only a few can.

And he adds cool music too. ;)

    Long live John!

  85. A.... S....

Well the last couple people who say that their peers don't get their taste in music... Our parents are cool and they listen to wicked music! We went to see Hiatt as a family when I was like 14. (The Mandy Moore thing is painful)

  86. 1.... ....

I'm 26 and feel that most of my peers have abysmal taste in music. Good to see other people around here who agree: John Hiatt, Steve Earle, John Prine...simply three of the best ever.

    1.... ....

Your taste in music is beyond EXCELLENT!!!

    1.... ....

steve earle ??  you lost your mind ??

    1.... ....

25, right there with you. So many more. Lyle Lovett is great if you haven’t checked him out.

  87. H.... ....

My favorite Hiatt song. Love this song......

  88. c.... ....

Man, is he good or what?

  89. h.... ....

I've seen quite a few performers on stage. John is among the very, very best of them all. There is no better singer and no better songwriter on the planet. Unfortunately I have seen him live only once, as he doesn't come to Germany too often. I'd love to see him again.

  90. m.... ....

cool melody. he's a genius amongst songwriters.

  91. s.... ....

This guy is a great singer. I can't imagine why he isn't more famous than he is. I had the CD "Perfectly Good Guitar", but my kids tore it up. BAD KIDS!

  92. L.... L....

super! never knew there was a video of this song

  93. s.... ....

you're right. i've just seen the video now after listening to the song for years and it is nothing like i've imagined it all this time i.e. a road video.

  94. B.... L....

Saw him live once, great performer.
His album 'perfectly good guitar' could be a Greatest Hits record.
    Wonderful.

  95. C.... ....

    Hiatt is the coolest ever!!!

  96. P.... ....

This is good but can you find an unplugged version or a video of Feels Like Rain?

  97. p.... l....

great music, nice man, JOHN HIATT!!
