John Grant - It Doesn't Matter To Him Lyrics

If I think about it, I am successful, as it were.
I get to sing for lovely people all over this lovely world.
And I am nowhere near as awkward as I was when I was younger.
I guess I'm one of those guys who gets better looking as they age.
And even though I have felt beaten down by constant doubt,
Depression, and confusion brought about by people's actions, death, and tax forms,
I keep getting up. And I am loved by all my friends and family;
Though, there have been lots of raised eyebrows
And concerned glances lately.

[Chorus]
It doesn't matter to him.
I could be anything,
But I could never win his heart again.
It doesn't matter to him.
He took away my AAA pass.
I am invisible to him.

And now I feel the soft, pink flesh of my heart hardening
To the countless possibilities contained within each day.
Vulnerability feels like a cold, wet concrete room lit with fluorescent light,
Which, as you know, makes everything look bad.
I still keep trying to figure out how I became irrelevant,
How I got myself evicted from his heart from one day to the next.
And the worst part is that, even if I got an answer right now,
It would not change anything because we have become two strangers.

[Chorus x2]
It doesn't matter to him.
I could be anything,
But I could never win his heart again.
It doesn't matter to him.
He took away my AAA pass.
I am invisible to him.

If I think about it I am successful as it were
I get to sing for lovely people all over this lovely world
And I am nowhere near as awkward as I was when I was younger
I guess I'm one of those guys who gets better looking as they age

    And concerned glances lately

    It doesn't matter to him
    I could be anything
But I could never win his heart again
    It doesn't matter to him
He took away my triple A pass
    I am invisible to him

And now I feel the softening flesh of my heart hardening

Vulnerability feels like a cold wet concrete room

Just when you thought to have heard every perspective in regard to heartache, along comes John Grant with his impeccable, creative songwriting. It's as if he's possessed by Sigmund Freud. The soothing music is therapeutic.

John's voice is like a warm embrace!

  14. J.... Z....

John Grant, the one, the only. Thanks for gettting me through it.

  15. S.... W....

Never knew about him until I saw 30 minutes of his set as a support to Elbow in Leeds 06/03/2018. Completely blown away, superb lyrics, amazing voice and production. Albums bought and looking forward to more live shows. The BEST SUPPORT ACT I'VE EVER SEEN.. well since 1975 anyway!

  16. K.... k....

    Es hermosa, simplemente perfecta!

  17. C.... F....

lovely song pity we don't hear more of Sinead

  18. T.... ....

    Brilliant...

  19. S.... H....

    tears in my porridge

    S.... H....

    Brilliant comment👍

  20. E.... s....

His Hemingway style is cool although a bit jarring,
but I love his music :)

  21. C.... L....

This song is great and the writing is excellent. But the irony of the ironies is to have Sinead O'Connor willing and available and relegate what could have been her awesome vocals to the background. A great song failed to become sublime.

  22. T.... C....

    so good chills perfect

  23. m.... p....

Absolute genius, superb writer, amazing voice.
I want Grant like friend of mine!

  24. f.... ....

...where the hell where you through my teenage years, mister Grant...

    f.... ....

he was 5 doors down from you.

  25. C.... M....

did anyone realize that the intro is identical the intro of unsatisfied by the replacements? I guess it is a kind of tribute!

  26. H.... 9....

I never realized that was Ms O'Connor in the background vocals! Beautiful!

  27. S.... R....

Can't stop listening to this. What I really like about lyrics is the lack of so called "poetry" most of performers bother to produce. Just everyday language we speak and hear around and that's its power.

    S.... R....

+Sebastian Rubin It's probably why he's so underappreciated. It's not "traditional" song with every two lines having a rhyme. One reviewer even labeled his lyrics "awkward". I think he's WAY WAY ahead of his time, is all.

    S.... R....

John Grant is a cunning and accomplished lyricist. The sign of his craft is that it's invisible.

  28. S.... T....

If only i had some self awareness this would be funny!

  29. G.... L....

Beautiful song. First saw him on Dave Letterman's show. Been a fan ever since.

  30. O.... W....

that song that you sing to yourself at any time of the day
    , genius

  31. C.... L....

when you've got a singer like sinead o'connor, it seems a crying shame not to have her singing anything more than slightly breathy backing on the chorus. and god, i hate hipster beards

    C.... L....

+Ceri Lloyd I guess you'll have to track her down and ask her why she wanted to sing on this track. Part of her reason may have been that she wasn't singing with anyone with a hipster beard. Are you completely clueless?

    C.... L....

    +Ceri Lloyd Moan Moan Moan

+Ceri Lloyd The art of subtltyyltlylt

    C.... L....

If you think about it, it's kind of incredibly appropriate. This isn't Sinead's song. Her vocals are fantastic in any amount. The fact that she stepped back and graced the song this way is amazing.

    C.... L....

Has Sinead got a beard now????
    😁😂🤣😃

  32. L.... H....

what an absolutely brilliant voice and album  ::::

  33. R.... ....

This song shoud be sung by a woman, isn't it ?

    R.... ....

    Why do you say that?

    R.... ....

+RL@VD Nope, it's gay as hell

    R.... ....

@Jay Palacio And I like it that way.

    R.... ....

@Vermillion 303 Agreed! The song is beautiful...

  34. C.... S....

can hear the pink floyd influence in the synth toward the end

  35. J.... B....

This kills me. I literally just died.

    J.... B....

come back jackie, we need you.

  36. K.... o....

one of many melodic gems by him.

  47. B.... F....

He writes such perfect melodies on the keyboard, great musician

  48. A.... E....

It's strangely ingeniously how he can write lovesong after lovesong without ever falling in the trap of being oversentimental or corny. It's right on. Perfect lovesongs (aka hatesongs sometimes).

  49. D.... C....

    no dislike <33
