Is it just cool to like this song? It's really bad. Sucks. Do you think it's "edgy"? It's an embarrassment for a guy that is so talented and should make you never want to get hooked on heroin. Wow does this suck. No disrepect to John who is a great musician/artist/chez factory owner.

It doesn't suck, it's just fucking weird and sometimes we don't understand this kind of stuff. Maybe some years from now you will listen to this song from a completely diferent perspective and like it. Art is subjective, and the only thing that makes it good is it coming from a pure raw deep feeling, and I think this song does, as everything that John does as indeed he is a great musician and artist.

actually it was released november 24th 1994, i still remember that day, 3 days before my birthday. that cd was ALL that I wanted, definitely not RHCP's One Hot Minute.

To set the record straight, according to wikipedia and several interviews, John was not addicted to heroin when this album was recorded. Niandra Lades was mostly recorded at John's home in 2001, before leaving the Chillis, his subsequent depression and addiction. This is one of my favorite albums, and one that I have listened to more than any other.

I think he was already going down a very desperate path during these recordings, even if he wasn't a day-in-day out addict. That's part of what makes this shit so raw.

John was an addict during his years as a chili pepper...he was a cocaine addict mostly. He was doing heroin in the chili peppers. Saturday night live is prime example, it says it in scar tissue. Scar tissue has a lot of cool things you can’t find on google about the peppers...I think John was slowly becoming more addicted to heroin and I think it helped him lead to quitting the band cause he had all that money. He says he hated Kurt Cobain and shit but John obviously idolized him, Kurt quit nirvana for a year just to do heroin. Kinda the same senario as John except John is a different breed of human being. I admire John for getting help and getting himself together but really in all honesty the man quit the band cause he didn’t want to stop doing heroin...period...u can read all you want about why he quit and shit but I’ve been through addiction myself and I know what it does to your head. You eventually quit everything that means the most in life

It wouldn’t surprise me if a lot of the songs John wrote for Niandra was high on something wether it be cocain or heroin or alcohol...people tend to forget that John is an alcoholic as well and would go on these crazy drinking binges of pounding gallons of wine down and smoking pot during his first tenure with the peppers...that can drive you even crazier than heroin will...

He does say in a q an a that he recorded the songs while making bssm with the peppers but in scar tissue Anthony says that John was always stoned off his ass and he had to separate himself and sleep on the other side of the house cause Anthony was fresh out of a 28 day rehab and was clean...Anthony says he felt so alone recording bssm cause everyone was drinking and partying and he was sober the whole time. Under the bridge is what describes Anthony during the recordings

@kahy94, You're wrong. This was recorded before the addiction and released after the addiction. All the tracks on Niandra were recorded simultaniously with Blood Sugar Sex Magik. The Usually Just a T-Shirt tracks were recorded after. I believe he recorded some overdubs while on heroin much later - hence the solo in Ten to Butter Blood Voodoo.
