John, Elton - The Cage Lyrics

Have you ever lived in a cage
Where you live to be whipped and be tamed
For I've never loved in a cage
Or talked to a friend or just waved

Well I walk while they talk about virtue
Just raised on my back legs and snarled
Watched you kiss your old daddy with passion
And tell dirty jokes as he died

But I'm damned when I really care there
For the cellar's the room in your lives
Where you lace yourself with bad whiskey
And close the cage doors on your life

Well I pray while you bathe in bad water
Sing songs that I learnt as a boy
Then breaks all the bones in my body
On the bars you can never destroy

John, Elton The Cage Comments
  1. R.... B....

Elton's early stuff is still great.

  2. R.... S....

I forgot to mention the horns!

  3. R.... S....

This vintage song is priceless. From the funky weaving of piano and guitar in the intro and throughout to the great drums and vocals. Add serious yet funky lyrics for classic early Elton. Funky piano blues rock. This early vintage Elton remains hidden and underappreciated to many. This goes for Madman and Tumbleweed too.

As a kid in the early '70s who had grown up listening almost exclusively to country & western music, I enjoyed this song on a certain level but wasn't fully able to appreciate it until decades later when I had become a lot more familiar with the soul music of the '60s and early '70s. It's obvious that Elton had a great love for this genre of music. Now I'm wishing he had gone to Memphis or Muscle Shoals or New Orleans to cut a full album of soul music.

  5. M.... C....

    amazing album :)

  6. N.... ....

This song makes me realize that Elton John and Janis Joplin could be one of the greatest duo of those times

  7. M.... ....

This is so good! Why doesn't it have more views? I can't stop listening to it.

  8. T.... C....

Absolutely one of my favorite tunes of Elton's

  9. P.... T....

    Adoro esta música ;)

  10. i.... v....

    love love love

  11. H.... T....

mai suonata live, uno dei pezzi più belli di Sir Elton Hercules John!

  12. c.... ....

    Piss off 3 thumbs down!!

    c.... ....

It just freaking turned to four as I was listening! idiots he's a musical genius!

  13. C.... ....

What bass do we reckon that is?

    C.... ....

    Fender Jazz with flatwounds?

  14. B.... S....

1:32  Moog Synthesizer as performed by Diana Lewis.  In 1970, electronic music was still in its infancy.   Diana Lewis switched to the ARP synthesizer (the Moog's cousin) in 1971 for 'Madman Across the Water'.

    B.... S....

Yes; Paul Buckmaster confirmed that the "brass" section you refer to in "The Cage" is indeed a Moog synthesizer, in comments on "First Episode of Hienton" about 4 months ago. RIP Paul B. (gone too soon).

    B.... S....

Thanks for the info on Diana , wonder if she's still playing in a band somewhere. Didn't realise that she also played on the Madman album.

  15. T.... C....

Elton gas a million greats and thus could be his best! this may be my number 1!

  16. M.... D....

Somehow rough and ready but it does the trick..well done that knight!

  17. S.... ....

Any of you lived in a cage?

    S.... ....

No , too drafty for me

    S.... ....

no, but it turns out that my first boyfriend (unbeknowst to me at the time:1978) wants to.

    S.... ....

    Does jail count?

  18. R.... C....

This album, almost every track, defined my early Junior High experience 1970-71. Every day I'd play this vinyl over and over. One of my favorites on the record though almost every tune was strong--Your Song, Take Me to the Pilot, Border Song, etc. Thanks for posting.

    R.... C....

    @Ronnie Cohen Nicely put.

  19. B.... ....

This album is great from start to finish and this is one of the highlights.

  20. t.... ....

    Elton John = GOD !

  21. B.... E....

Definitely one of my favorite Elton John tunes.

  22. b.... ....

This is the album that kicked off Elton's classic period from 70-75. He still hadn't found his sound on his debut album 'Empty Sky' in '69, but on this album, his second, he found his sound, the writing with Bernie Taupin had matured, and 'Elton John' is a classic album.

  23. F.... ....

Please! stop saying "BEST SONG EVER!" lol It may be a good song, even a great song, but no song is the BEST SONG EVER, EVER! I could give you 100 songs that are great, but you'd be hard pressed to say one was the greatest.

    F.... ....

    Typical Zappa! ;)

  24. F.... ....

Just got this LP at lunch box records for cheap, so happy :D

  25. K.... ....

That album made me take up piano again after walking away from it for several years. I'm still a musician, a blues musician which is where Elton John started out. Thanks Elton.

  26. D.... R....

Everyone! Hide this! Keep it having no dislikes!

  27. m.... ....

Yeah, Elton is best known for many of his weak songs while lots of his masterpieces are hidden away. One of the best selling artists but grossly undervalued! Oh, i love the original Candle in the Wind, but the soppy Di version has undermined it

  28. w.... ....

Amazing that some people only know the Elton John that sang "Philadephia Freedom" or some other commercial song that came later than 1976. To me this is some of the best of Elton.

  29. K.... M....

@SuperRod88 i know, about a month ago i was talking about Elton John and my friend said "who's that?" i was like WHAT? 0_0

    K.... M....

    Blasphemer

  30. w.... ....

Well, this is not his first album....you knew that, right? This album is so good. It really is so superior to Empty Sky. Elton didn't take a ton of time to really start developing his musical ability....love this song!

  31. C.... S....

I agree, he had his whole young life to write this songs.

  32. M.... ....

Talk about a debut LP! This rocks!

    M.... ....

    Mr1969rastus it wasn’t

    M.... ....

It was only his debut album in the states. Empty Sky was his true debut album, but not released in the states until 1975..

  33. t.... ....

It's such a pity Elton is only famous for "Circle of Life" and "Candle in the Wind", really slushy songs, when he has an amazing back-catalogue before he was really famous. Is it irony when Elton is truly underrated?

  34. E.... S....

This album, and Madman across the water in my opinion are the bessst, and of course goodbye yellow brick road.

    E.... S....

    And tumbleweed connection

  35. L.... P....

Got to see him with Steely Dan (their only tour for decades) in the Cotton Bowl in '72....Second concert I ever went to.....They had released the Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting as a single shortly before that and the crowd went crazy for it. Still one of the top concerts I ever went to....Davy played that miniature guitar and it was greatness.

  36. n.... ....

I listened to all these songs and more.. the70's are so missed................
thank YOU for posting these in such great fidelity!!!!!!!!

  37. C.... B....

@SuperRod88. It has a catch that I never can forget. It's a great song.

  38. j.... ....

    LOVE ITT

  39. J.... F....

You have to be an Elton John fan from the early 70's to know and appreciate this album. I bought my first E J album about 1973 or 74 (Don't Shoot Me.........) and I have been hooked ever since

  40. s.... ....

The song in my head today. Can't get enough of it. Elton has made so fantastic and ass-kicking songs.

  41. D.... ....

    One Of My Faves

  42. S.... ....

C'mon people! This is one of Elton's best songs EVER! I can't believe there are still people who doesn't know this music.
