John, Elton - Sails Lyrics

I viewed in my presence
My hand on my forehead
And sighting the liners
Of mad merchant seamen
In search of the living
Or the spices of China

Lucy walked gently
Between the damp barrels
And shut out my eyes
With the width of her fingers
Said she'd guessed the number
Of bales in the back room

While the seagulls were screaming
Lucy was eating
Then we hauled up our colors
The way the mother had told us
And together we just watched the sails

Lucy I said
In a passage of cotton kegs
Can we hold hands
I'm sure that it's warmer
Then the gulls ate the crumbs
Of Lucy's sandwich

I was a tween growing up traveling with my family.... listening to music, it was our only diversion as kids because we moved around so much. While my sister was obsessed with Simon & Garfunkel, I was in love with Elton!

  6. t.... ....

This album is perfect, this is insane, I'm so glad I finally started to listen to Elton John!
Edit: Am I the only one who hears a bit of the Beatles' "Savoy Truffle" in it?

Along with Where To Now, Saint Peter this is the greatest EJ/Bernie Taupin song nobody ever talks about.  Priceless vocal, scintillating guitar and masterful lyrics.  Kudos!

Oh you're 17 too? I just discovered Elton's music last year and now I'm almost 18. I got to see him live last year and it was SO WORTH IT- I am sooo addicted to Elton. It hurts as well, I cry over him lol. I want a time machine so badly... the 1950s-1980s had the BEST music. I've got Elton's posters all over my room- I've got all his albums on vinyl and CD and cassette from Empty Sky to Wonderful Crazy Night. I'm so in love with him it aches deep inside. He is my idol; yes he's a 'teenage idol' lol!!

Please don't crucify me diehards....but can you believe I 've been a huge fan since 1970, and yet never heard this '69 classic lp until today, with the exeption of skyline pigeon, and lady samantha. Thank you for an incredible listening experiece!!!! Tim in Leamington, Canada.

Bernie's lyrics were never better (until Rock Of The Westies, anyway). Anyway this was a musically incredible first release...
