John, Elton - Oceans Away Lyrics
I hung out with the old folks
In the hope that I'd get wise
I was trying to bridge the gap
Between the great divide
In the theater of their eyes
Picking up on this and that
In the few that still survived
Call 'em up, n' dust 'em off, let 'em shine
The ones who hold onto the the ones
They had to leave behind
Those that flew and those that fell
The ones that had to stay
Beneath a little wooden cross oceans away
They bend like trees in winter
These shuffling old grey lions
Those snow-white stars still gather
Like the belt around Orion
Just to touch the faded lightning
Of their powerful design
Of a generation gathering
For maybe the last time
Call 'em up, n' dust 'em off, let 'em shine
The ones who hold onto the the ones
They had to leave behind
Those that flew and those that fell
The ones that had to stay
Beneath a little wooden cross oceans away
Oceans away
Where the green grass sways
And the cool wind blows
Across the shadow of their graves.
Shoulder to shoulder back in the day
Sleeping bones to rest in earth, oceans away
Call 'em up, n' dust 'em off, let 'em shine
The ones who hold onto the the ones
They had to leave behind
Those that flew and those that fell
The ones that had to stay
Beneath a little wooden cross oceans away

John, Elton Oceans Away Comments
Dear Bernie and Elton, Thank you for continuing to SHARE . Wonderful, wonderful song.
2019
Are the lyrics in Elton's songs in his new albums still written by Bernie Taupin? Anyone? Thanks!
Pretty song but I have no idea what it means.
Almost sounds like old style church music. Different. Lyrics feel different also.
I wish people respected the older generation more like they did in the older days.

Today marks the 75th anniversary of D-Day (June 6, 1944) where Canadian, American, French and English allied forces came together as one shoulder to shoulder against the Germans on the beaches of Normandie (France). This became a crucial moment in history of the Second World War. Elton and Bernie wrote this poignant and heartfelt song to honor those who couldn't come back to their families because of the ultimate sacrifice and now rest in peace under little wooden crosses, oceans away.
Знаком с Вашими песнями с детства , очень мне нравится Ваш приятный тембр (успокаивает) слушаю вас практически каждый день после работы(спасибо, здоровья,счастья и благополучия .ПРИВЕТ ИЗ РОССИИ

Nice but extremely wordy
Just Elton and a piano 🎹
It's great to hear great lyrics and a beautiful tune!
That song makes me feel so blessed happy and about to make me cry it reminds me the old folks back then when I was younger and remind me of my grandma and granddad R. I. P. and also my old C. B. S. Worker Mr Bunn
belo elton john uma lenda viva pura poesia em suas veias!
Thank you, Bernie, for the words that mean so much to do many. Thank you, Elton, for once again inexplicably matching a haunting, powerul melody to thos great words! I will stand every time I hear this song, and pray for peace on this earth. On this, the 100th Anniversary of the end of the War to end all Wars: Thank you!
So sad that the once great writer and vocalist has now departed. The x factor that was his and his alone gone. A tired rendition of a very predictable melody and a vocal with no charm. I so miss the 70's Elton.
Bernie T and Elton J are as good as music gets: this is Ryan A collaboration with Ron B..i wrote this, each and every lyric on the album
One of his best ballads in the past 30 years! The modern Talking old soldiers, and for me, it's equal! Classic Elton!
This guy is simply one of the greatest composers of all time. And anyone who thinks less than that does not understand anything about music.
A touching tribute to the greatest generation❤️
Wow, Beautiful.................Thank You..
Wonderfully done Sir Elton....love it !!!
I don't have issues with Elton's personal life, it's all good, but this song is insulting to people 10-15 years older than he is. I'd like to polish off and dust off several friends, but they all died, we grieved, we recovered (most of us, at least). And of all of Elton's songs, this is the most tortured melody, the lyrics don't fit, and it just smells like it's money in the bank, there's no integrity here. It doesn't fit the circumstance.
+generalxanos Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics and it fits his uncle, I think, about the D Day landings and the war vets.
Elton John doesn't write lyrics, he writes music. He has a partner who writes the lyrics.
Its a tribute to vets. I dont get why you feel it is insulting to anyone.
It seems there's always one who doesn't get it. See Bernie Taupin's interview about his father.
A gentle disagreement here: this seems completely honorable and heartfelt to me -- not to mention inspired and well-crafted -- but the remarkable and ineffable thing about music of a certain standard, of whatever era, is that it evokes such divergent reactions, feelings and opinions. I suspect the lyrics are what may trouble you more than the music, which to my ear is a simple ballad. Taupin does say "let 'em shine..." after all. So I don't think there's anything demeaning or dismissive about it.
elton should work with patrick leonard again...sound wise leonard's work on songs from the west coast far surpasses the sounds t bone burnett gets....burnett is the wrong producer for elton...
+George Martin Mojo review of new upbeat album Wonderful Crazy Night: "if you love pop music, you really must hear it" Rolling Stone: "one of his finest". I think T Bone has done a good job on it, and The Union and The Driving Board were very good albums, i.m.o. Patrick Leonard did a fine job on SFTWC of course.
wow what a great song thanks Elton

To my kids who are so far away from me I love you ever so much and miss you so very much Love always dad
After more than 40 years of listening to Elton, he still moves me.
The perfect ballad for this very special 70th anniversary of the D-Day Normandy Invasions....Let us all remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice to turn the tide for freedom on those beaches 70 years ago and the few that are still around to thank. Let us remember the greatest generation who struggled through the Great Depression in their childhood, delivered us from tyranny in World War II, and the veterans who came back to build this country into what it is. Now into their 90s, perhaps they are gathering the last time at today's ceremonies, but their lessons can live on in our hearts.
I could layer 1000 superlatives on this song and they would still amount to understatement. I am stunned. Thank you, Sir Elton; thank you, Bernie.
Now THAT'S some poetry right there.
what an awesome song! Thank you Elton!

Beautiful song! I have this cd. It's the best cd he's recorded since The Captain and the Kid.
