John, Elton - Dirty Little Girl Lyrics

I've seen a lot of women who haven't had much luck
I've seen you looking like you've been run down by a truck
That ain't nice to say sometimes I guess I'm really hard
But I'm gonna put buckshots in your pants if you step into my yard

When I watch the police come by and move you on
Well I sometimes wonder what's beneath the mess you've become
Well you may have been a pioneer in the trade of women's wear
But all you got was a mop up job washing other people's stairs

I'm gonna tell the world, you're a dirty little girl
Someone grab that bitch by the ears
Rub her down scrub her back
And turn her inside out
`Cause I bet she hasn't had a bath in years

Here's my own belief about all the dirty girls
That you have to clean the oyster to find the pearl
And like rags that belong to you I belong to myself
So don't show up around here till your social worker's helped

John, Elton Dirty Little Girl Comments
  1. s.... b....

the illustration of this song on the album was inspired by a photo by Janis Joplin. Elton, I love you !!

  2. s.... ....

All women are depicted like this... only Elton and Bernie Taupin put this misogyny into words.

    s.... ....

This isn't tounge in cheek either, Bernie wrote a lot of songs like this. He got away with it because it was the 70s and hardly anyone cared. Those that did gave Elton a pass because he is gay and snowflakes aren't allowed to criticize gays.

    s.... ....

    @1369vmsmith Well said.

  3. D.... K....

    All around Damn good song!!!☯️

  4. G.... M....

Away at college and experiencing everything new. This double album had lyrics and drawings for each well crafted song. It was great seeing how the music made this come alive. Now some 45 years later, I am still rocking to it. So many layers of outstanding lyrics, music, harmony, and orchestration to support it all. Truly a masterpiece. Not a weak song on any side. I sing and play air guitar/piano/strings/drums to it. Thank you ET and band members.

  5. s.... p....

The songs on this album are an A+ or A or a B+ rating except for Bennie and the jets is a C+ rating for me! That's just my honest opinion, many A+ ratings for me, about 8 of them!

  6. W.... G....

this track is fantastic elton cuts loose on the vocals/love it nigel is with him the entire song

  7. J.... ....

In a world before political correctness. Best music ever.

    J.... ....

  8. S.... H....

Oh his voice in this song... *nosebleed* ..so freaking sexy.. The voice , rhythm, melody, the song as a whole is so damn awesome!

  9. K.... ....

This is a killer little tune.

  10. R.... P....

Nasty written Nasty played Brilliant production..... EJ off the map

  11. R.... D....

"Someone grab that bitch by the ears..."

I wonder if that line has anything to do with LBJ picking his beagles "Him" and "Her" up by the ears in front of the press in 1964?

  12. R.... Q....

This song comes directly before All The Young Girls Love Alice on the GBYBR album. I've always visualized this album in a movie. At this point Alice who didn't have the money for stylish clothes attends a party. Some jerk bully of a guy is singing this song humiliating her in front of the party goers. As the song fades, close up of her face showing hurt and a single tear as she walks away looking back over her shoulder. Fade into the next song where Alice finds solice and acceptance with older women until her body is found in the subway.

  13. L.... B....

This song came out when I was like 10? Loved Elton, but didn't get it- now I do!!! Still love Elton

  14. B.... ....

Easily the most underrated Elton song.

    B.... ....

    absolutely true.

  17. c.... ....

This album is a  roller coaster -sad one minute and rocking the next - love it ....

  18. R.... E....

Buta que es rico este tema wn.

  19. S.... G....

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Deep Purple Machine Head the Eagles Chicago Transit Authority Carole King Tapestry Blood Sweat and Tears I'm missing a couple that was my freshman year in high school all those albums those albums to this day are there very definition of music and rock and roll Elton John Billy Joel Billy Powell and the piano player for Bob Seger are the greatest piano players ever to sit behind a piano not organ piano there's a difference

  20. B.... C....

This song is so timeless. We've all known a dirty little girl. Either that or we've, at some stage in our lives, actually been one! We have no idea how blessed we were the day this man landed on this planet.

  21. P.... m....

One of the forgotten songs on these early Elton albums, like this one, easily buries the best material from his later albums.

  22. D.... M....

    Crazy good

  23. c.... p....

    The best album he had

  24. G.... C....

Not just one of the best albums ever, but one of the best bands ever. Davey Johnstone's guitar, Dee Murray's bass, Nigel Olsen's drums, & Ray Cooper on everything else but the kitchen sink!

  25. J.... r....

with songs like this elton would have the girls bowled over like a racoon that is if berni and elt were'nt well ... you know, thinkin mabye it was just a front

  26. M.... I....

His voice is one of the best EVER

  27. J.... F....

My favorite song from good bye yellow brick road
    Hey hey hey
    You know what I mean

  28. b.... h....

Elton John may be the greatest entertainer that ever lived !

  29. T.... L....

Listening to this makes meat loafs bat out of hell seem like a poor man's Elton John...a greatvalue if you will

  30. S.... I....

saw a documentary on the making of this album. Elton would just leave the studio and let Davie, Nigel, and Dee come up with the backing vocals. Absolutely brilliant and integral to what makes this and Captain Fantastic absolute masterpieces.

    S.... I....

Sunshine Inktown - GR8 documentary, especially when they went to record in Jamaica; “ bring out the (1) microphone. WTF? Normally we used 16 mics on the drums alone...” HAHAHAHA

  31. P.... W....

    Vocals are premo!!

  32. P.... W....

Why does the ride cymbal drop out at 1:24?

  33. P.... W....

You know, Im multi-levelled on how to interpret the lyrics of this song.

  34. S.... C....

"You have to clean the oyster to find the pearl" ;-)

  35. J.... W....

Best song ever. Amazing vocals by Sir Elton!

  36. S.... H....

This should of been a crazy single, such an overlooked song by Elton John!!!

    S.... H....

    I agree 100%

  37. T.... G....

    love  Dirty  Little  Girl

  38. L.... C....

LOVE me some ybr. If I were on a desert island. I want this album. :)

  39. L.... C....

    I'm dying here. This. is...my life. ;)

  40. J.... B....

    I LOVE THIS WHOLE ALBUM!!

  41. i.... c....

Tie between CF and GBYR. I also like MATW. Hard to judge his early work and what's better.

    i.... c....

Right, CF and GYBR are both among the very greatest albums of all time, I would rate Tumbleweed Connection as his #3.

  42. M.... C....

I'm currently forced to listen to this by a drunk dog

  43. B.... D....

it's not possible and beyond mans ability to create something of this magnitude and Elton seams to have done just that. How could someone in England who grew up poor in a housing project have so much positive influence on virtually everybody I hung out with during my teenage years here in the state of ks and still today as i listen to dirtyittle girl those same feelings prevail and I am equally impressed and steadfast in saying its beyond mans capabilities

  44. E.... B....

I've seen a lot of women who haven't had much luck
I've seen you looking like you've been run down by a truck
That ain't nice to say, sometimes I guess I'm really hard
But I'm gonna put buckshot in your pants if you step into my yard

When I watch the police come by and move you on
Well, I sometimes wonder what's beneath the mess you've become
Well, you may have been a pioneer in the trade of women's wear
But all you got was a mop-up job washing other people's stairs

How she do it, how she do it, how she do it, oh
I'm gonna tell the world, you're a dirty little girl
Someone grab that bitch by the ears
Rub her down, scrub her back
    Turn her inside out
'Cause I bet she, I bet she
    I bet she
Oh, I bet she hasn't had a bath in years

    E.... B....

    thank you

    E.... B....

The best FU song ever !

  45. i.... ....

happy birthday Elton John! Sunday March 25, 2018. Palm Sunday.

  46. M.... R....

I always have just loved this song!!!!!

  47. D.... W....

Best Keyboard, Guitar n' Bass Guitar sound ever! All accompanied by the Drums!

  48. L.... J....

Man, these lyrics would turn into a big problem for Mr. John nowadays.

  49. I.... ....

"someone grab that bitch by the ears!!! Rub her down!! Scrub her back, and turn her inside out....cause I bet she...I bet she...I bet she...Oh, I bet she...hasn't had a bath in a year!!!"

  50. D.... ....

Anyone know where to get the sheet music for this?

    D.... ....

no but somebody posted the lyrics here and if you google you can get the chord progression believe me its worth it , he uses minor progressions just like harrison mabye even more so ,his instrument progressions are so far advanced its sick, just always remember in hindsight that practicaly nobody ever gets close

  51. v.... a....

Someone grab that bitch by the hair

  52. O.... ....

American "women" are considered very disloyal, controlling, and promiscuous by the 67 other industrialized nations - and by many of the others. They're right...

  53. S.... G....

One of the greatest if not the greatest album ever made

  54. S.... L....

There are 10 masterpieces in music that are above "all others".  This "Yellow Brick Road" LP is one.  Sensational.  IMO

  55. J.... ....

Hard to believe gay men wrote this song.

    J.... ....

A straight man wrote the lyrics.

    J.... ....

after all these years i'm startin to think it was a publicity stunt, after all ,by his own admission he said bi so mabye he tried it once then everybody said queer and he just rode it, who knows who cares

  56. m.... ....

The weakest track on an otherwise excellent album .

    m.... ....

midtownjohn What, every track on this album was genius. I’d easily say this one of the most... astounding. It displays Elton’s ability to give a bite to his songs.

  57. M.... F....

imagine playing the song as a tribute to some woman

    M.... F....

    I LOVE THIS SONG!

    M.... F....

I think I will do that!!!!

  58. M.... B....

I'll bet she hadn't had a bath in a year......

  59. s.... ....

I could bet, Elton wrote and recorded that song with Alice Cooper in mind. Maybe even has written it for him, who knows? He was a huge fan of Alice back then (and vice versa), and Bernie Taupin links between them anyway. (All The Girls Love Alice was even played in the documentary Super Duper Alice Cooper)

  60. K.... H....

    the soundtrack of my youth

  61. C.... V....

One of the best rock and roll albums, ever.. And probably my very favorite.

  62. n.... ....

The keyboards are amazing in this. So are the guitars. So are the vocals. So is the bass. So is the drums. So is the production. So are the lyrics. Err.. have I left anything out?

    n.... ....

Elton's socks during the recording. ... I'm sure they were great as well. ;)

    n.... ....

    Ray Cooper on tambourine

    n.... ....

Fantastic music ! I am in heaven! What a great masterpiece of an album from start to finish!

  63. g.... ....

Always Wanted Phish to Cover this .

    g.... ....

It'd go a long way toward making me a Phish fan. ;)

  64. O.... S....

when EJ was the shit! a lot of people don't know is that Elton was the first white dude on Soul Train

    O.... S....

elton was first. he went on in may 1975 and bowie appeared on it in november of that year.

    O.... S....

Actually Dennis Coffey (Motown guitarist whose hit was "Scorpio") appeared on 1/8/72, and Gino Vannelli ("People Gotta Move") appeared on 2/22/75 before Elton's 5/24/75 appearance. So Elton is the "3rd white guy". Bowie (1/3/76) might be called 5th, since the Average White Band (11/22/75) snuck in ahead of him.

    O.... S....

He is my sisters fav singer ever, listen to this entire album throughout the 70s on the back porch with sister and my mom

    O.... S....

I think it was notable that Elton was on Soultrain. Also for David Bowie. Innovative multi talented performers with a lot of SOUL.
I remember seeing Sly & the Family Stone on ST 1974, and remembered how cool it was to see a white drummer and saxophonist in the band. (I was only 9 then)

    O.... S....

And I liked Mother's Finest Band had a white guitar player playing all that funk.

  65. J.... H....

I remember when I was in high school me and my friends swore the chorus was:
IM BAT SHIT OHHH IM BAT SHIT

  66. G.... N....

This song includes some of Elton's best vocal moments!

    G.... N....

    the whole album

  67. E.... ....

    I'M BEDSHADE! I HAVEN'T HAD A BATH IN A YEAR

  68. E.... ....

    I'M BATSHIT!

    E.... ....

    "Bet she...."

  69. u.... ....

Keep your cowbell...I gotta' have more Leslie piano!  Man was a child prodigy on keyboards and never disappoints instrumentally.

Tony Saunders - 350 Group Ltd thx I’m trying to find new good songs and that helped alot

    T.... S....

This is my favorite song from this album and the whole album is a masterpiece. These lyrics are just on fire. Bernie as just fine with being low key but it really should be more well known about how important he is to the whole Elton operation. He creates the story that Elton acts out. Im not knocking Elton at all. He is quite the performer. He is a legend but come on. You could go out on the street and ask people left and right who love Elton John if they know who Bernie is and the vast majority answer they have no clue.

    T.... S....

    Thank you for posting

    T.... S....

Thank You Tom for the lyrics! I thought he said some other things lol

    pure emotion....................

  72. B.... M....

I love this song...when I was young I thought it was about a....Dog !!....Now when I play it the Challenger goes faster.....go figure.....great album....a long attention span...listen

  73. M.... ....

In the days where everything didn't get buried in production. Best arrangement ever

  74. K.... K....

A song that may be considered contentious in these 'PC' days, taken from an album that deals with a murdered lesbian, a little mickey-taking in Jamaica, the sounds coming from a graveyard, lamenting a gangster and the fun or gloryfication of a puinch-up on a Saturday night!!  Some critics hit out at  Elton for taking the 'pop' star route after the 'Madman' and 'Tumbleweed' albums, but I simply cannot see too many pop stars of today dealing with song matter like those just mentioned.  Thanks Elton, Bernie and The Seventies for one of the greatest albums ever made!!

    K.... K....

+Kandelise Kandle You PERFECTLY nailed what this album is all about!

    K.... K....

this song along with Sweet Painted Lady and Jamaica Jerk Off....think about it ....Elton's sexual preference inspired these masterpieces

    K.... K....

so right you are, you just made me remember someone told me that way back in the seventies and i'd forgot but you deciphered it perfectly, you lyric guys have a real talent that many including me don't have the full insight to so we just take what we can get, it shows great sophistication and i'm not trying to be facetious

    K.... K....

one of the 10 greatest albums, Captain Fantastic maybe even better

  75. F.... P....

God, is there a song on this album that is bad !!!
I effin love this and tender young alice !
AND ALL the rest !!!!! Luv, Luv ,Luv !!!!

    F.... P....

    +Frankie Pitochelli TOTALLY AGREE !!

    F.... P....

NOT REALLY, ESPECIALLY FOR A DOUBLE ALBUM!

    F.... P....

No doubt, it's like an all-time greatest release, when it's only your regular release.

    F.... P....

Jamaica jerk-off. That is the only bad song on this album.

    F.... P....

the album has the greatest sequence of 5 tracks in musical history- Funeral for a Friend, Love Lies Bleeding, Candle in the Wind, Bennie and the Jets, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. I think the weakest track is Jamaica Jerk Off

  76. p.... l....

I forgot about this unusual, hard-hitting gem. Love the anger in his voice.

  77. T.... M....

    Killer bass by Dee Murray.

    T.... M....

+Tim McKeown R.I.P.  David Dee Murray was killer on bass guitar!

    T.... M....

My inspiration !!! I picked up a bass because of that guy! Cried so hard when he died.

  78. A.... G....

"Clean the OYSTER to find the Pearl"... Talking of double sense, ehm!

  79. T.... T....

yeah, there were bigger songs on this album (Bennie and the Jets) but this is arguably the best song on here........................just my opinion.

    T.... T....

The album is loaded with magnificence.

  80. y.... ....

Grab that bitch by that head!!!!  I remember this when I was 8!!!!!

    y.... ....

@yoshluv7 Even as a 5 year old child, I could swear he said "grab that bitch by the ass"

    y.... ....

+Pha Q Me too. Never occured to me to read the lyrics.

  81. J.... ....

Does anyone know the context behind this song, was this about a woman he (or Bernie) knew?

    J.... ....

+JammastaJ23 My educated guess is that Bernie had a knack for writing lyrics that sometimes had little to do with his direct experience.  Tiny Dancer is an exception...that was for a girlfriend named Maxine.  But 'Dirty Little Girl' I think falls into the Danny Bailey, Social Disease, Sweet Painted Lady category of Taupin having a unique gift for creating (or manufacturing) a scenario.  Sorry for my longish answer.  :)

  82. o.... ....

"I sometimes wonder whats beneath the mess you've become!"

    o.... ....

Does not get the radio play it deserves!!!!

  83. T.... ....

I'M gonna put Buck-Shot (in ur ass) if u step into my Yard! period

  84. r.... r....

it's almost like his coming out of the closet. no one really knew he was gay until around this time. unless of course you knew him personally

  85. r.... r....

great tune , too bad it was the beginning of his weird period. almost everything after this was too commercial

  86. D.... M....

number 57 of my top ej 100

  87. K.... H....

My moms fav song from this album. As many ppl have said, every sing a classic, from one of the top 50 greatest albums of all time

    K.... H....

my fave also.. never gets boring, just keeps getting better!

  88. T.... L....

I think everyone knows someone like this.

  89. E.... C....

low point of one of the greatest albums ever

    E.... C....

@***** HILARIOUS!! The Whole Album ROCKS!

  90. M.... M....

    This song rocks!

  91. R.... E....

Uno de mis temas favoritos de Elton John.

  92. R.... ....

Nice melody and Davey Johnstone is perfect on guitar. Elton should write songs just like this.

  93. C.... F....

Why is this so good? He probably never played it out because there is so much belting and vocal growling that it would have gotten in the way of the falsetto side of his voice. This is REALLY vocally demanding. Not that all the falsetto stuff wasn't. Not that a present day Elton show or album isn't as well. This piano sound was used again on Caribou either on Sick City or Cold Highway.

    C.... F....

@Chit Nasty I think that the piano was put through a Leslie Speaker.  When I was small, I thought that you could BUY a Leslie Piano!!  Yamaha do a good take of it on some of their instruments these days.  True about the vocals, but if your range suits this key it is good fun belting the song out .

  94. J.... B....

    You all are great.

  95. N.... R....

He is saying EARS. He is implying that she is only good for one thing.... TO FACE FUCK HER

    N.... R....

Um, WOW...NO. I don't think so. He means grab that bitch up and drag her over here to give her a good SCRUBBING...because she's dirty.
Where in the FUCK did you get THAT from besides your own perverted mind?!? Cuz that's REALLY reaching.

    N.... R....

The whole song is a double entendre ...

    N.... R....

    @Paula Eichler ...It is. :)

  96. N.... D....

She has not had a bath in a year? Get yo skanky but in the bath toob

  97. d.... b....

if there is a god please bless them  as simon &gar on 5th ave they are doing a service as a ex soldier i know

  98. D.... ....

    I haven't had a Batman in years.

  99. W.... ....

This reminds me of women that only bathe once or twice a week with dirty hair that smells like a skunk. Like the women who smoke and wear too much perfume because in their imagination it gets rid of their ode to transient barfly smell.

    W.... ....

    lol nice

    W.... ....

    EXACTLY!!!!!

  100. T.... ....

dirty dirty dirty little girl....sing it to me reg
