John, Elton - Blues For Baby And Me Lyrics
Your old man got mad when I told him we were leaving
He cursed and he raged and he swore at the ceiling
He called you his child, said honey get wise to his game
He'll get you in trouble I know it, those bums are all the same
There's a greyhound outside in the lane, it's waiting for us
And it's all over now
Don't you worry no more
Gonna go west to the sea
The greyhound is swaying
And the radio is playing
Some blues for baby and me
And the highway looks like it never did
Lord it looks so sweet and so free
Singing blues for baby and me
Saw your hands trembling, your eyes opened in surprise
It's ninety in the shade babe, and there ain't a cloud in the sky
I called you my child, said honey now this is our game
There's two of us to play it and I'm happy to be home again
There's a greyhound outside in the lane, it's waiting for us
So tell him goodbye, we gotta go west on that bus

Best song
To my mind this song soars above them all.
Edward Haughney it's my favourite too
saw him in Bangor Maine two years ago. that part of my bucket list is complete
Elton bought it home everytime.
My father use to go on a ride with this song on 8 tracks on his mustang 65 when I was 3 or 4 years old
What a great memory.
Such a gifted artist. Maybe the brightest star of the past 50 years.
Absolutely one of my Elton favorites. It’s extremely hard to even pick a favorite, he was just so one of a kind, the soundtrack of my life.
One of the best songs on the superb album, after the beautiful masterpieces High Flying Bird and Daniel, and on a level with Elderberry Wine
"Daniel" is on another level for me. Can't get enough of the song, no matter how many times I listened to it. #1 song for me from Elton has to be "Daniel." Then, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," and tie for #3 "Your Song and Skyline Pigeon (1972 version)."
Probably one of his best 10 songs!
Richard David LOVE IT!💕❤️
I really love this entire album so much! Saudades de Cascais!
Elton did a splendid job of taking Love's "Alone Again Or" from the Forever Changes LP and permuting the central riff from that tune into this classic.
This is my favourite song from *"Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only the Piano Player",* with only *"High Flying Bird"* coming at a dangerously close second.
Totally agree. 1970 to 1975 was Elton's classic period although he continued to make great music after that time.
@Vinylsearch2015 60 I agree. Every Elton John album has a song that I like. *"Don't Shoot Me"* has *"Blues For Baby and Me",* and *"High Flying Bird."* :)
My two favorites also...
Fell in love with Elton when I was 10 with this album....Never gets old and brings back so many memories and feelings...Love it
I was in high school when I fell in love with Elton and I still love listening to him today. He is one of the best!
fantastic song, with a killer chorus!!! Dee Murray a truly genius on the bass!!!
Listen to that Sitar
This is my favourite song from the *"Don't Shoot Me"* album/CD.
Mine, too. Got this album for my 11th birthday...
My favorite song in the album. It's bitter sweet for me. I remember listening to this song when my mom was alive. It's so sad when we listen to music & it reminds you of a great past.
sounds like my Dad on his death bed......I Know he saved my Life...and the Life of My Children
Beautiful song
My favourite song on the don't shoot me album. I love the orchestral arrangement, and the sitar brilliantly complements the eastern flavour of the melody during the verses. An EJ/BT classic!!
A great album. Elton and Bernie were at the top of their game. Never fail to realize how outstanding Elton's band members were.
The whole album is special to me. I was 9 years old. My babysiter used to play this for us and GAVE me the Cassette she had when she did that for my brother and I. I still have that Cassette she gave me back then. Its playable but a little rough. Its enough to hear and remember and what she did for us.
So classy for it's time. As much as we liked it back then we didn't really get it . So magical , so special. I miss those golden musical days. A time that will never return.
It was a magical and golden time. We were young then and so much, hell, everything seemed possible. Our hearts untried and unbroken, our dreams new and comforting.
But time rolled on, some dreams came to life, some were lost, hearts broken, then made whole, when the love we were meant to share, came along.
No, that time can never return-- this is true. But weren't we blessed to have had those times? And weren't we lucky that songs like this, were part of the soundtrack of our lives then and now?
Hadn't heard this song in YEARS, forgot how much I love it! Wonderfully touching ballad.

Dj M whats your top 10?
Just magnificence! This song has really grown on me over the years! I used to listen to this record as a kid in the 70's.
That it is!!
Monster talents. I think we kind of take it for granted; there are adults today who have grown up with this music as immersive as air, but the entire body of work is massive and brilliant through and through.
Great album, at their best peak.
This was one of my moms favorite songs when I was a kid she have been in heaven now for five years. I miss her ❤
I'm now 54
Lorraine Huntsman She definitely had a good taste
Lorraine Huntsman sorry for your loss
Who else has their own music video playing in their head? I see it in the style of the new Tiny Dancer Official Video...a road song, if you will.
Elton John and Bernie Taupin at their very best.
Absolutely brilliant !
Amen. One of, if not my my favorite Elton John song. This and Friends top the list.
it's all over now don't you worry no more
Love this song, Thanks again Ronnie...
My pleasure!
btw great pics thanks for posting
UR welcome - glad U enjoy!
one of my Favorite songs of E.J. it's so hard too pick just one! he sure was a big time partier back in the day so glad he pulled through & now is a Sir :)
the guy is a musical genius won't be another like him again ever.
you have to give Bernie Taupin some credit too
This is from the era where every song on the album was a treat.
How can there be 8 thumbs down??? Fantastic song!!
luf2u just amazing to me... some people just like to hate
luf2u No Taste???
It’s just the law of averages, just the percentages. There are always going to be a couple of wackos in the mix, people without the desire to express their true opinions when asked but just like to shake things up because of some psychological deficit and need to stand out.. That’s why nearly all polls have that few percent margin of error clause, it’s factoring in those very wackos.
love him..always
Brilliant. Only heard this album in full for first time yesterday. Wonderful
Masterful vocals by John. Great drumming. The sitar is very tasteful. Nice orchestrations to pull it all together.
Exactly, the instrumentation and subtle nuances with the sitar add that much more to the song, as do of course Elton's legendary piano, his voice, and the touching lyrics. Great song.
One of Elton John's most often played songs on FM radio in America from 1973 to 1976. Why? Because it's classic Elton John and Bernie Taupin.
Probably inspired by Paul Simon's America.
This song is so good I would need to write a book just about it. I will leave it at this it will always remain in my top forty Elton John songs!
The arrangement is gorgeous!

Claude, are you still alive? What happened to Jarred Price who wrote songs with you.....one was about a black wall (remember?)
I never heard this marvellous song on the radio and I was an adult living in D.C. at the time. It is fortunately over 5 min. and radio stations shun them. Cheers
