John, Elton - Birds Lyrics

There's some things I don't have now
Some things I don't talk about
These things are between myself and I
In my thick skull the joker hides

There's consequences I'm scared to taste
Cold hard truths I can't face
These days are different than the past
Reflections change in the looking glass

And everywhere I look there's something to learn
A sliver of truth from every bridge we burn
A hatful of quarters and a naked song
Don't answer the question of where we belong

How come birds
Don't fall from the sky when they die?
How come birds
Always look for a quiet place to hide
These words
Can't explain what I feel inside?
Like birds I need a quiet place to hide

These independent moves I make
This confidence I try to fake
You can hear the beating of my heart
But not a feather falling in the dark

And everything I hear never makes any sense
Another old prophet perched on the fence
A cupful of pencils and a self help guru
Don't answer the question of what I am to you

    "Birds"

    There's some things I don't have now
Some things I don't talk about
These things are between myself and I
In my thick skull the joker hides

There's consequences I'm scared to taste
Cold hard truths I can't face
These days are different than the past
Reflections change in the looking glass

And everywhere I look there's something to learn
A sliver of truth from every bridge we burn
A hatful of quarters and a naked song
Don't answer the question of where we belong

    How come birds
Don't fall from the sky when they die?
    How come birds
Always look for a quiet place to hide
    These words
Can't explain what I feel inside?
Like birds I need a quiet place to hide

    These independent moves I make
This confidence I try to fake
You can hear the beating of my heart
But not a feather falling in the dark

And everything I hear never makes any sense
Another old prophet perched on the fence
A cupful of pencils and a self help guru
Don't answer the question of what I am to you

SFTWC is top 3 Elton for me..
    .I love this album..
    fave line in this
"a cup full of pencils and a self help guru"
imagine the music "hole" had these two not been paired..... serendipity on steroids
EJs unmatched phrasing of BTs lyrical paintings..

.this entire album stands tall right along GYBR and MATW etc..my fave tune on this album.depends on my mood...but i love
Boy in the Red Shoes &. American Triangle a lot

  4. A.... M....

I read that this the actual demo and they decided to use it as is...why it has that raw feel maybe?

  5. C.... S....

fan archi fan Sir Elton j'adore depuis ses débuts

  6. T.... O....

Yes!  this  IS Elton '71 --upon hearing this I thought it was an old out take from that era that he never released--now listen to radio ---on second thought don't-- it will only depress you

  7. J.... G....

The most raw song on the album! Witty lyrics, too

  8. C.... R....

I play piano at church and my style is about like mixing Elton John/Billy Joel/Sara Barielles...I love this song, very metaphorical and symbolic.

  9. J.... R....

    great song

  10. a.... y....

this recording sounds like elton circa '71 --raw creativity and production--its too good for todays shit "music scene" God bless reg dwight

  11. M.... ....

@mrbluefields he was already the best in the mid-70's. The man doesnt need to prove anything.

  12. E.... P....

Songs from the West Coast compares favorably with his earliest, most original albums--each song a gem.

  13. c.... ....

great tune one of his best. and i mean best.

  14. P.... W....

    @kennygr8 Birds.

  15. P.... W....

    Wonder about the one dislike.

  16. J.... G....

I think it deals with being famous and just needing to become human once in a while, "like birds, I need a quiet place to hide". To me, it is in the lines right there.

  17. m.... ....

Then again, there are those birds that just fell out of the sky and died. Great song, great vocal, BTW

  18. j.... k....

The song is about the time elton and a couple of guys tried birds instead of gerbils. Quiet place to hide, what i feel inside...
