John Denver - The Eagle And The Hawk Lyrics

I am the eagle, I live in high country in rocky cathedrals that reach to the sky.
I am the hawk, and there's blood on my feathers.
But time is still turning, they soon will be dry.
And all those who see me, and all who believe in me
share in the freedom I feel when I fly.

Come dance with the west wind and touch on the mountain tops.
Sail o'er the canyons and up to the stars.
And reach for the heavens and hope for the future
and all that we can be, and not what we are.

John Denver The Eagle And The Hawk Comments
  1. J.... W....

I have this album and am a devoted fan of John Denver; I will always mourn his death.

  2. P.... S....

When I was an infant my mother would carry me with this song and dance.

  3. D.... P....

    Not really, but pretty good.

  4. D.... P....

The best song I've ever heard!

  5. s.... ....

This song is one of my top 5 songs of all times. It’s so amazing to listen to it with headphones on. Still can bring me to tears.

  6. M.... O....

I love this song and have since I first heard it in the 1970's. Such a pity he died. At least he died doing something he loved... flying.

  7. M.... B....

If you heart does not soar when listening this song..... then you just don't get it! J.C.P.

  8. A.... B....

I believe the eagle screams the same concern that freedom has.

  9. K.... B....

My fav John Denver song. Love it!

  10. S.... C....

This song is criminally short. My favorite patriotic song of all time...critical but aspirational and inspirational at the same time.

  11. M.... G....

Soar on, John. Your music will live on forever.

  12. M.... A....

Josh Kiszka lead me here and I like it

“ I am the hawk and I have blood on my feathers”

  14. C.... X....

It’s amazing that after all these years with people being gone you still know their story by what they do and what they’ve given. Miss you Denver

  15. B.... S....

It still amazes me how after all these decades this single song effects me just as it did when first released. An anthem to freedom of spirit no matter what form it may have taken. John Denver hooked my heart back into its true-ness then and now. ❤️

  16. B.... C....

John Denver was the truest form of the modern Natural American Spirit wanting to reinvent himself to be more than he could be... soaring with the Eagles and into Natures Grand Places.. Happy to be Free and to inspire all to fly with him while he joyfully sang his songs of connection, concern and love..

    B.... C....

    He was the Original Environmentalist.

  17. S.... H....

Fuck all you thumbs down idiots.

  18. B.... ....

What a great artist. Didn't have to sing about sex, violence, drugs or hate. Just plain ole great music.

  19. A.... K....

My brother and I played this song so much it skipped. I still "hear" the skips when I listen to it here :)

  20. A.... S....

    ถึงเขาจะจากไปนานแล้วแต่ จอห์น เด็นเวอร์ จะอยู่ในความทรงจำของผมตลอดไป

  21. t.... m....

Had a phase as a kid where I was obsessed with John Denver, and this is my absolute favorite song by him. So strong and it hits hard

  22. C.... S....

For a very short song, the power carries through. That's talent! Love this song! We miss you, John. <3

  23. H.... v....

Probably my favorite of his entire discography. He’s a wizard at illustrating setting.

  24. B.... M....

This almost sounded like flower power in the beginning

  29. J.... K....

One of the most awesome inspiring songs....

  30. E.... B....

    I absolutely love this song.

  32. H.... ....

    West.....by .....G......WV...

  33. Y.... S....

Fantastic vocals. There is so much life in this song. His live version on (A Evening with John Denver) is just as good as his studio recording .Just far out.

  34. C.... T....

"And reach for the heavens and hope for the future and all that we can be, not what we are." One of my favorite lyric of all time, of any song.

  35. T.... ....

This song doesn't deserve to be this good. I love it so much. One of my favorite songs I've heard from him.

  36. J.... C....

Walking along the ocean near Monterey Ca I came upon a boulder with a plaque to mark where He died in the plane crash. His voice and talent beautiful like the ocean where it ended. Truly one of kind .

  37. J.... W....

I grew up listening and loving John Denver's music. The Eagle and The Hawk is one that makes me feel glad to be alive. I can't think of 2 of the world's most awesome birds, the eagle and hawk and John composing this tribute to honor them. His words, melody, 12-string acoustics, voice of total truth and belief in what he loved and saw in God's creation...this song w/the symphony and cadence embodies John to a T. I get emotional every time I hear it. It's too wonderdul. John's passion comes through loud and clear. I'm glad he followed his passion for music because he gave my life and the world many songs to make us feel happy and feel good inside. John loved nature and animals. His songs were poetry. He was a 💎 gem. God bless Henry John Deutchendorf, Jr.

  38. J.... H....

The pilot on this flight (see youtube link) was John Denver's father...

    https://youtu.be/0jN6hx0LCfA

  39. A.... F....

This song makes me want to go see the bird show.

  40. S.... W....

you just had to get that second hand screw ball plane.

  41. A.... ....

I think of this whenever I am floating in my pool. Love you, JD! Wish you hadn't left us so early.

  42. B.... B....

D TheBassman. I saw John 16 times over the years. I never found him arrogant. There were two main reasons he did not sign autographs. First, he found them to be superficial and not as meaningful as being with someone and talking with them. He was always happy to have his picture taken with us. Second, he found that signing lots of autographs could cramp his hand up. He happily signed my copy of his autobiography, as that is what you do on a book signing tour.

  43. J.... D....

one of the most beautiful songs john Denver ever created. I live in the rockys in Alberta Canada. to actually see eagles and hawks soar over the Athabasca river is a gift to behold

  44. D.... D....

One of John's very best songs

  45. R.... F....

Throwback to the 1970's .... I was at the University of Arizona when John Denver came out with this song - it's been over 40 years since I've heard The Eagle and The Hawk ... now that I'm on the verge of retirement, the song gives me chills when I think of the freedom I'll enjoy ... just like the eagle when she's flying high in her domain over the American West !!!

  46. B.... D....

    great stuff

  47. H.... ....

    2:16 of pure bliss!

  48. G.... G....

after 40+ years this song still gives me goosebumps

  49. R.... R....

Love this song with all it's crescendo's!

  50. M.... A....

He is the greatest singer I have seen

  51. K.... P....

The POWER and passion that he sings with in this song gets to me every time! I love this song!!

  52. B.... B....

had to check this song out after reading about it in Kristen Ashley's book Wild and Free. great song, love Bob
    Denver RIP

  53. K.... G....

My cousin and I went out to the woods with a boom box and played this song and sang to it at the top of our lungs! It was deer hunting season and we could hear the guns. We scared all the Deer away from the hunters.

    K.... G....

Somehow I think John would have approved of you scaring the deer away from the hunters. :-) Sounds like a magical experience.

  54. E.... S....

As a profound and dedicated protector of all birds of prey...this song is organically and simply stunning! John Denver was taken from us way too soon! Loved all of his music....

  55. T.... S....

All that we can be, and not what we are!

  56. E.... Z....

Love this song so so good

  57. J.... a....

    Before he sucked.

  58. D.... ....

This is my favorite John Denver song. I have seen both an eagle and hawk fly but even if I had not I could picture it with this song. Close your eyes and let this song bring the words to pictures.

  59. j.... e....

JD is one of my fav singers of all time, and this song is top 3 for me. I still get chills and so many memories! 8th grade, impromptu school assembly me and my bff, Karen Bell, were asked to perform, and we did this one first. She played guitar and flute, and I sang and strummed my guitar:) Karen taught me how to do the bar frets for the intro. Whew, that was hard. But when I started singing, something magical happened. Everything faded away, and I soared. I grew up to become a skydiver, and this is my anthem.

  60. D.... L....

John's spirit is aloft with The Eagle And The Hawk :-)

  61. N.... ....

    Take your hat off.

  62. A.... a....

Those who dislike clearly do not "reach for the heavens and hope for the future and all that we can be, not what we are."

  63. K.... Y....

People who didn't appreciate this song and talent, must 🎶 live underground!😢 I can visualize everything John sings about and it's. Do beautiful!😊 my husband and I 💘 loved all his music 🎶 even went to one of his concerts with our daughter Colleen many years ago in Indianapolis, Indiana!😄 Loved him!😊

    K.... Y....

My first date with my husband 38yrs ago was to see him. Still enjoy his glorious music today!

  64. T.... ....

Breathtaking! Reminds me of looking up at the peaks of the Tetons in the Grand Targhee National Forest.

  65. M.... ....

    Should be America's new Anthem.

  66. M.... H....

Used to have this album ...great song. John Denver was so gifted. His music soars.

  67. B.... ....

This would be in my all time top ten favorites. THIS made be buy someone's music.  For the first time ever, I wanted something someone had sang or played. And it was JOHN!.  THIS SONG made me feel that way.  There's just nothing like this anymore.   Thank you John. You were one of the people who made music so special to me, and made me want to play it.  (btw, this song was not long enough!!!!  see ya soon bro)

  68. J.... O....

This song comes from the most high father in heaven. JD was a prophet I kid you not.

    J.... O....

I don't think that is accurate.

  69. T.... B....

this is some of the best music there is it just don,t get any better then John Denver strong voice just makes you feel so good about your self but most important no foul words

  70. A.... L....

I first heard Annie's song on a commercial, it was a beautiful one. I fell in love with his music then.

  71. M.... ....

John is amazing, ever since I started listening to who his wonderful songs all I've ever wanted was to see the Rockies, dance with the winds, and see all that I can. This is a beautiful world and my heart soars at the thought of one day getting to see those great mountains.

  72. N.... B....

    good stuff

  73. T.... D....

An amazing song!! Today's music is garbage.

  74. R.... M....

    One of his best songs!

  75. P.... R....

For some reason, I feel Pearl Jam should do a cover out of this MASTERPIECE. John Denver's music just takes me out of the material world into another dimension.

  76. S.... K....

Even JDenver is dead i am impressed of his handy work... I bet he'll be a cool guy if he were still alive

  77. N.... K....

    Truly Metaphoric

  78. T.... G....

    Love this song. Incredible.

  79. f.... ....

    Stupenda, Amazing.

  80. g.... d....

First time I heard this song, it was sung acappella by a young woman at the local coffee house. She was amazing. Have no clue what here name was. This was in an old church building in the north hills of pittsburgh. Some nutjob burnt the building down. Anyway, Hope her music career went well.

  81. l.... w....

I heard this when I was little from my preschool teacher who was a bird person-- great song / memories

  82. T.... W....

    Miss you Myles.

  83. A.... ....

This song should be the anthem of wilderness and freedom.

    A.... ....

One for the land and one for the seas

    A.... ....

    John was good at those.

    A.... ....

Makes me want to cry every time I hear it. So beautiful.

    A.... ....

    agreed agreed

    A.... ....

    Merica!

  84. l.... t....

Every time I play this it has to be 3 or 4 times. Just majestic, like the Eagle and the Hawk. Powerful song and singer.

  85. E.... I....

One of the most beautiful songs EVER written. It inspired me to write and play and sing songs for my entire life.
Every time I play, I hope to get the feeling that this song gives me.
Thank you Mom for introducing me to music; it was the greatest gift you could have ever given me.

    E.... I....

Same here man!! This song literally made me go out and buy someone's music and want to try to play it!! God bless Evil 1 !!! hahaha

    E.... I....

Something tells me, if you like this song, you might not be all that evil. (i won't tell anyone ;))

  86. J.... R....

This song is about AMERICA..The Hawk is the military...The Eagle is what we can be....

    J.... R....

That is a great analogy. I never thought about it that way, but now I cannot get it out of my head:

I am the eagle, I live in high country
In rocky cathedrals that reach to the sky
I am the hawk and there's blood on my feathers
But time is still turning they soon will be dry
And all of those who see me, AND ALL WHO BELIEVE IN ME
Share in the freedom I feel when I fly

Come dance with the west wind and touch on the mountain tops
Sail o'er the canyons and up to the stars
And reach for the heavens and hope for the future
AND ALL THAT WE CAN BE, NOT WHAT WE ARE

    J.... R....

No not really it's about how he wants to fly and How he would feel

    J.... R....

and all those who see me, and all who believe in me, share in the freedom I feel when I flyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy....

    J.... R....

I highly doubt the Hawk represents the military. John also wrote this and it is an anti war/military song. https://youtu.be/1OXzigSimKg

    J.... R....

The best songs have deep meaning on many levels open for interpretation. I believe it's about eagles and hawks.

  87. K.... H....

I actually have this record, but unfortunately my stereo is out of commission
    sigh... time to fix it

  88. E.... M....

    ,,,,,,,,music can be very stimulating

  89. T.... D....

    Thanks Geoff!

  90. R.... A....

man jd is cool. it beats the talentless drivel that the media dickheads try to brainwash other talentless dickheads into purchasing.

  91. D.... T....

I saw J D in concert three times, twice in Seattle and once in San Diego. I met him briefly at his second concert in Seattle. He's a very good song writer and an adequate rhythm guitarist, but his arrogant personality sours him. His "country boy" persona is just that. My opinion of him is very low. When he spoke (with no cameras or microphones around) he was an arrogant jerk. A "big" fan of his asked him to autograph his (fan's) John Denver song book. Denver's response was "I don't sign autographs" in a very spirited tone of voice.

  92. b.... ....

    That voice though..

  93. B.... d....

Eddie vedder needs to do this song.. He would knock this deep

    B.... d....

No, no actually, he doesn't. And no, no actually, he wouldn't. Not even almost. Tool bag.

    B.... d....

Brian donnelly I can totally hear this.

    B.... d....

@bionicbigfoot I know...only John for me. He wrote and sang what he was passionate about and rang true. Anyone else trying to do it would fall flat and be nothing...just fake....I grew up in the 60's and 70's....all the classic music being made. John Denver and Gordon Lightfoot were two of my favorite folk artists and still are.

  94. C.... D....

    JD you da man.

  95. S.... ....

    Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
I am the Eagle I live in high country in rocky cathedrals that reach to the sky I am the hawk and there's blood on my feathers but time is still turning they soon will be dry and all goes to see me and all who believe me share in the freedom I feel when I fly
Come Dance with the west wind and touch all the mountain tops
sail over the Canyons and up to the stars
and reach for the Heavens and hope for the future and all
that we can be and not what we are.

    S.... ....

    Absolutely!

    S.... ....

"And all those who see me"

    S.... ....

My God I miss him. :(

    S.... ....

    Awesome song.

  96. P.... M....

it boggles my mind how some people can actually give this masterpiece a thumbs down.I'm so grateful I don't live in their world.

    P.... M....

I was just thinking the same thing. If this song doesn't fill you with joy, you are dead

    P.... M....

I have one theory, that perhaps it's that goofy looking image of John the poster decided to use. Of all the pictures one could have chosen...

    P.... M....

Just FYI: When most people give a "thumbs down" it's their way of telling YouTube NOT to show them more of the same type of video. That's how YouTube determines each person's selections. So, it may not be personal. They just don't care for this kind of music. There's no accounting for taste.

    P.... M....

@Don White -- that "goofy looking picture" was the cover of the album. I always liked it. It seemed to capture his whole personna.

    P.... M....

@Marige OBrien I know every album cover John every did. This is not high on the list. Rocky Mountain High or Windsong seem dignified enough to suit his overall message. I'm not saying John didn't do the silly from time to time, but I don't see the one you chose as representative of the man's career.

  97. J.... B....

    Oh, thank you.

  98. J.... D....

I am moved by this song. How beautiful it is!
