John Denver - Raven's Child Lyrics

Raven's child is chasing salvation, black beak turned white from the crack and the snow.
On the streets of despair the answer is simple, a spoonful of mercy can set free the soul.
The drug king sits on his arrogant throne, away and above and apart.
Even children are twisted to serve him and greed has corrupted what once was a heart.

Raven's child keeps vigil for freedom, trades for the arms that once made her strong.
With nuclear warheads and lasers in heaven, fear does the choosing between right and wrong.
The arms king sits on his arrogant throne, away and above and apart.
Bankers assure him that he needn't care and greed makes a stone of what once was a heart.

Raven's child is washing the water, all of her wing-feathers blackened with tar.
Prince William shoreline's an unwanted highway of asphalt and anger an elegant scar.
The oil king sits on his arrogant throne, away and above and apart.
Lawyers have warned him he mustn't speak and greed has made silent what once was a heart.
You know there are walls that come tumbling down for people who yearn to be free.
Still there are hearts that long to be opened and eyes that are longing to see.

Raven's child is our constant companion, sticks like a shadow to all that is done.
Try as we may we just can't escape him, the source of our sorrow and shame, we are one.
The true King sits on a heavenly throne, never away nor above nor apart.
With wisdom and mercy and constant compassion, he lives in the love that lives in our hearts.

John Denver Raven's Child Comments
  1. R.... ....

The world is really in a Catch-22. On one hand, we need oil and the defense mechanism against tyrannical maniacs. On the other, excess runs deep in our world. The truth is, greed will always be pervasive on our planet. Until man's heart is softened by the love of Christ, we will continue to experience greed, avarice, violence, and excess.

I watched this as a child, when my daughter is old enough to understand I’ll show it to her.

The Drug King is Big Pharma. Big Oil is the nazi Bush crime family who is also the war machine along with all their cronies, guilt by association.

It isn't only the Bush's, you buffoon. This problem runs deep in the heart of man. Man, at his core, is a depraved sinner. And the poor and needy suffer the result of greed, avarice, hatred, and excess.

I thought I was the only one hearing this song of late... I found some old cassettes that I just couldn't give or throw away when I moved far away and to a smaller place and I am so glad I kept "The Flower that Shattered the Stone". Sooo many good songs on it... "The Gift You Are" a real forever favorite. So glad the tape still plays... my only clock radio cassette player won't do rewind or fastforward but it can play and the speakers are like new so what a find.... and yes why John?..... I hear him say... " Don't be sad.. I lived a good life and did a lot and had few regrets...... so ...Take my legacy and make it a new voice, new every day....holding onto the best of all times gone and yet to come of our world and beliefs with kindness... love and compassion and mercy and caring and sharing.... Listen to what the song and the Raven King are saying.... my life does not end if you will do these things for ALL" .... Yeah I can hear him saying that!! Love you John and thanks!! We will keep your spirit alive in our hearts as long as possible!! Though like one of your song says... "Wish You were Here!" For sure my friend.. For sure...
