John Denver - Poems, Prayers And Promises Lyrics

I've been lately thinking about my life's time, all the things I've done and how it's been.
And I can't help believing in my own mind, I know I'm gonna hate to see it end.
I've seen a lot of sunshine, slept out in the rain, spent a night or two all on my own.
I've known my lady's pleasures, had myself some friends, spent a time or two in my own home.

I have to say it now, it's been good life all in all, it's really fine to have a chance to hang around.
and lie there by the fire and watch the evening tire
while all my friends and my old lady sit and pass a pipe around.
And talk of poems and prayers and promises and things that we believe in.
How sweet it is to love someone, how right it is to care.
How long it's been since yesterday, what about tomorrow
and what about our dreams and all the memories we share?

Days they pass so quickly now, the nights are seldom long.
Time around me whispers when it's cold.
The changes somehow frightens me, still I have to smile. It turns me on to think of growing old.
For though my life's been good to me there's still so much to do.
So many things my mind has never known.
I'd like to raise a family, I'd like to sail away and dance across the mountains on the moon.

My older brother got married this past weekend and one of his best friends played guitar and sang this song at the beginning of the ceremony in honor of my mom. She used to play and sing this song to her five children when we were growing up, along with number of other John Denver songs. Of all the hundreds of guests, I don't think there was dry eye in the room.

  34. M.... E....

This is such a beautiful song

  35. L.... E....

People today can't imagine just how popular a singer John Denver was in the 1970s .
I think my sister owned every album he recorded back then

  36. h.... ....

This is a song that I have always wanted played at my funeral ever since I heard it when I was a child. I don't want to die anytime soon but this says it all. God do I miss John Denver.

  37. J.... E....

reading the cause of his death and listening to this music makes me want to cry.

  38. c.... z....

    "Pass the pipe around."

  39. O.... C....

John denver the best forever and ever .

  40. J.... T....

Such a beautiful song. Shall be the song played at my funeral

  41. J.... D....

I KNOW he committed suicide. As sad as I am about it. I feel it.

  42. w.... b....

Grew up 60s and 70s, mom bought me a guitar and I'd learned to play and sing Johns music for my gma, sis and mom. Always used the word "time" in place of "pipe" though. Then again, puff the magic dragon was also an innocent song for us back then too. How about one tin soldier, thanks to John for making a childhood less miserable, miss his live music.

  43. T.... L....

While all my friends and my ol lady sit and pass the pipe around. 👍

  44. H.... C....

People turn their noses up at John Denver and I can never understand why. I love this song and the album. Even his covers are like completely original songs when compared to the actual originals. Mr Bojangles... need I say anymore?

  45. J.... W....

John Denver's music makes me smile. My mom and I went to see him in a concert in the round- the only pop concert we ever saw together. His life was such a gift.

  46. H.... N....

When I was recently married we went to a John Denver concert at the Inglewood Forum. We had a great time. Many years later we saw him at the Hollywood Bowl with our then 10 and 8 year old daughters. Again we had a great time including the kids. Such illustrates the universality and agelessness of his music. His early death was a great loss.

  47. D.... S....

I love the simple message in his lyrics.........timeless....we need more music calling out the joys of life and living and loving one another.

  48. D.... S....

I remember listening to his music in the 70's and 80's, and I listen still and remember my younger life.....I hope he can serenade us all in Heaven some day!

  49. M.... R....

I never get tired of listening to John sing. You're missed John.

  50. H.... M....

    Such a beautiful voice.

  51. G.... G....

    *John's still the king* 🎤💓

  52. T.... O....

My dad listened to John Denver all the time growing up. His music is a big part of my life and reminds me of my dad who passed after battling Ahzheimers. Listening to John Denver automatically reconnects me with my dad. Really missing him these days.

  53. R.... W....

Beautiful song. I had copies of Greatest Hits, and Back Home Again growing up in the 1970s.

  54. J.... H....

Thank you John, for sharing your beautiful lyrics and melodies which capture the love my precious angel and I share. Your poems, and prayers and promises are forever ingrained in our hearts and souls.

  55. c.... ....

I miss him and Harry Chapin so much.

  56. A.... A....

    To poems & promises ❣️

  57. U.... m....

his voice much younger here, i like it,..

  58. m.... o....

"...and pass the pipe around.." nice!

  59. L.... S....

The only good memories are listening to John Denver and the wonderful effect his music had on me..Very BEAUTIFUL....We all miss John Denver may his legacy and memory be forever..

  60. D.... C....

It turns me on to growing old, it has been since I started listening to John in 1972, now that I am old it so cool exploring the trip. Peace.

  61. A.... D....

Watched him live in College Station over 45 years ago. The lyrics make this song timeless. I have a small rewrite:
“While all my friends and my old lady sit and watch the Sun go down..”. Hope you don’t mind John!

When I recite these lyrics to people of my age 70+, many tear up with me. I always do.

  62. R.... B....

I Remember getting my first ever cassette when I was 12 years old, it was John Denvers Greatest Hits Volume 1 simply my favourite. To me John was simply the greatest singer to ever walk this earth, greater than Elvis and the Beattles. God Bless John Denver

  63. a.... a....

    ciao John ......

  64. J.... S....

I really like John Denver's music, but even he broke his promises to his wife Annie, he broke his wedding vows to his wife Annie (that is how we got the song "Annie's Song"). The only One who has not broken His vows is God Almighty, so put your trust in God Almighty, and the Crucified and Risen Savior, who is the Son of God who came to take away the sins of the world, by dying on the cross as a substitute for our sins, and then rising from the grave triumphantly on the third day..

  65. J.... M....

My most favorite John Denver Album of all time. This one I play over and over again!

  66. T.... R....

HAVE 2 CASSETES OF HIM IF U GET DEPRESSED TRY KICKN BACK WITH ON HEADPHONES HIS SONGS OF INSPRIATION ARE AWESOME. EVEN TODAY ITS RELAXING OR MAYBE U JUST WANT TO FLOAT AWAY ON A WING IN A DREAM ITS AWESOME

  67. W.... B....

John denver is quite literally a God send, he was made to have the voice of an Angel and the most honest lyrics anyone can sing, i dont care who says what, john denver was the BEST country singer to EVER walk God's great earth

    W.... B....

I do enjoy John Denver's music, but even John Denver never consider himself to be a county singer . Do you yourself consider that John Denver is a typical country music singer?

  68. K.... C....

I first saw John in concert right after this album came out. It was such a special concert.

  69. g.... s....

    RIP ...We miss u Mr.Denver..

  70. A.... L....

Always seemed to me like John Denver was writing in anticipation of his own untimely death in some songs. That's not true, of course, but it's just the beautiful way of his music in that beauty is inherently transient.

    A.... L....

Listen to his singing of the song "Forest Lawn," I don't think he wrote that song, but nevertheless, it's very telling. The version of this song in his "Evening With John Denver" album is probably the best.

  73. J.... J....

My very first concert was seeing John Denver at the Midsouth Colisseum in Memphis Tenmessee in 1977. His high tenor voice and the Violins in the Orchestra sent a chill down my spine!! RIP John

  74. N.... A....

I want to curl around you like the alpha female 🤙🏻

  75. N.... A....

I will be watching this movie with my dad excellent 😊😁 👌 legs lol 😂 love you too babe

  76. N.... v....

  77. J.... N....

My wonderful brother sent me this song when he knew he was dying. Great attitude, even though he was so, so young. Jimbo, I will miss you for the rest of my life. The best brother and friend.....RIP. ❤

  78. A.... L....

John f#$cken Denver, I don't remember much about him, but the only song that describes my life is the Rocky MOUNTION HIGH..( song..)

  79. P.... N....

Beautiful word's from him and everyone on here to. R.I.P John

  80. J.... O....

I will be glad when I am gone. Have 2 jobs but never seem to have any money. Been divorced for almost 11 years. Don't have any one in my life. I guess I am lonely. Hope death comes soon.

    J.... O....

    Babe, don't be sad.

  81. J.... O....

This song fits me perfectly. All except for the pipe. Never done marijuana. Never will. Also have not had a beer for 34 years.

    J.... O....

I had a Coors an hour ago as I was picking Rocky Mountain High on my guitar.

  82. W.... M....

First time listening to these songs in 35 years. I weep, shot in the heart.

    Genius.

  83. D.... N....

The memories we share? Yes I saw John at the Corral. First live Concert I seen. Funny thing. I've seen tons since. His mannerism to an audience was so genuine. He was as beautiful as the music he wrote and played and sang . What a concept? I fear we've lost this kind of talent. Play a guitar and wrote a nice song. Not happening anymore

    D.... N....

    It does exist.
The only problem is that the humanity is confused and likes the crap from now.

I’m 15 years old and there is no good music nowadays.
Hope there will come someone who can change it somehow.

  84. m.... ....

a fkin legend . thats it

  85. A.... S....

Listened to you from 15 to 58. Still adore

  86. T.... ....

Literally one of the most wholesome men to live. He should be remembered in the same way people do Bob Ross, or Mister Rogers

    T.... ....

Dude ! That's an amazing comparison, three complete originals, one of a kind in their own way

    T.... ....

Well, yeah...except for the drunk driving and domestic violence. But other than that...sure, man.

    T.... ....

@Steve Smith And the serial philandering..an absolute hypocrite.. love the music though.

  87. S.... B....

Just got back to listening to John Denver again. I don't quite what it is, but when God made music, he gave us John to bring us closer to him. Just an amazing gift to us. Then God wanted him back to sing to him. God bless John denver and thank you God for sharing him with us .

  88. C.... ....

"It's turns me off to think of growing old" so sad that he didn't live long enough to fulfill that fantasy. Rest in peace John

    C.... ....

    "turns me ON" not off.

  89. k.... ....

    D, love you so

  90. P.... R....

Totally blessed to have seen him play live in concert five times.

  97. B.... S....

I guess there's someone who will never grow old , he'll always be young and happy in my heart and in my memories. But I missed you John , missing you sooo much.
