John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band - Tough All Over Lyrics
Well, she's waiting for the bus
Down on the boulevard
Pretty little working girl
She ain't got no fancy clothes
Don't drive no fancy car
At the bar and grill
She's on her own now
He left and went away
He really broke her heart
It just worked out that way
[Chorus:]
Well, all over and all over
Things are tough all over
Things, things are tough all over
Well, he's drinking at the bar
Down by the old boat yard
He sits and he talks to strangers
The factory laid him off
And life's been getting hard
It's enough to make a good man bad
He's got that look in his eye
There's just no words to say
It's tough to swallow your pride
Each and every day
[Chorus]
Heres one for the broken hearted
It's tough just to get things started
All over again, all over again
He's got that look in his eye
There's just no words to say
It's tough to swallow your pride
Each and every day
[Chorus]
Things are tough all over
Things are tough all over
Things are tough all over
Things are tough all over...

John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band Tough All Over Comments
Some 34 years later, I just recalled this chorus in my head tonight so I finally looked it up on Youtube....and here it is. Welcome back, old friend.
Still one of my favorite albums ever.
For the longest time I always sung 01:22 as "The factory later won't forget it, like spaghetti's hard, took some milk to make a good man bad."
Ahahahah!!!!
Sounds like Tommy and Gina, except Tommy dumped her when they were half-way there.
Over the years, this song has held its place - it does not seem cheesy or cliche - it has a lot heart though may be a simple song. I like it now more than ever. It is of one of my favorite 80s songs....and I typically listen to more "enlightened" or perhaps more complex pop music such as Tears for Fears or Depeche Mode....so I think that says something special about this song.
Those times wont come back just remember them
7th grade year in jr high great times.
One of the first cassette tapes I ever stole back in the 80s. This song made it well worth the money...
I love this 1985 John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band hit, which peaked @ #22 on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart!!!
Bravo, John Cafferty & Co.!!! :-) <3
This shit is hot to death!
Such a cool album cover ... some good friends enjoying a good laugh.
awesome !

Crazy how fast the years go by. Always loved this song.
Guts song
Very Jackson Brown-ish
Yes. But even more Bruce Springsteen-ish.
La musique du génial "ping pong summer" j'adore ce film
Great Hit!! Great Band from back in the great days-1980's
Things are tough all over for the crybaby leftist adult children called demonazicrats
One of my favourite bands ever!
Was this song popular in 1985? I never heard it until my teens (around 2004) but if it wasn't, it should've been! One of those overlooked 80s hits, it's so catchy and the best blue collar song Springsteen never wrote!
Went to #22 on Billboard. Probably the inspiration for "Livin' On A Prayer" a year later.
People couldn't get past the whole Eddie and The cruisers BS. They are a great band in their own right. But at the time Bruce had just released Born in the USA and was starting a monster tour so people saw him as a Bruce Clone which was very unfortunate. Both great artist. Another time and place thing may have gone differently for them.
These cats are from my home State (Rhode Island).....cold beer in hand, night time at the beach. Good times.
CUE THE MONTAGE!
Wow John Cafferty the master of the 80s.
What’s John Cafferty up to nowadays?
your music takes me places l never been before. thank u john
Wow, I haven't heard this song since the 80's. Great song! Rock On!
For you, MWV.
Ping-Pong Summer!!!
WOW MAN LOVE JOHN CAFFERTY & THE BEAVER BROWN BAND SINCE THEY CAME OUT. MY EX COULD NEVER GET THAT TOUGH, WHILE I COULDN'T GET ENOUGH OF THEM
The factory laid him off , well now there is no factory in the post Thinks are tough all over
I still love this song
I miss the 80's-the best music
70's 80's the best decades
Springsteen wishes he was this guy
I highly doubt it. Springsteen is a multi millionaire
Mr.underrated.

Things were tough all over - and they still are
That is a fact . Best of luck to President Trump in the Korean summit .
you are doing something wrong if all these years no change
John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band are playing a very intimate show at Johnny D's in Somerville, MA on Friday, January 29th from 6-9PM, with special guest support from Charlie Farren of the Joe Perry Project and Farrenheit! The club is closing in March so they've got some amazing shows booked to help wrap things up!
Saw them on campus regularly at UMASS during my 78-82 studies.
Things are tough all over.
Whoa! Sounds like Survivor with Jackson Browne on lead vocal.
you know yer right! never put my finger on that.
"Survivor " by Jackson Browne that's another song I haven't heard in a month of Sundays . Thanks for reminding me .
OP meant this song is like if Jackson Browne sang for the 80s pop rock band Survivor (I never made that connection but I can totally see it too, lol)
With The Big Man on sax.
Yeah, the keyboard riff channels "High On You"
Very Springsteen-ish.
Very . I doubt if the boss is jealous though .
The songwriting totally is, but I feel like Cafferty had his own style. This song is a little more chilled out but also has more synthpop than Bruce did
Actually, John Cafferty and The Beaver Brown Band were from Narragansett, Rhode Island. They formed as a band in 1972, but it took them 12 years before they scored their first major hit, a top ten song from 1984 called "On The Dark Side" - from the motion picture "Eddie & The Cruisers".
Bravo, John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band!!!
@motorcityquig No, Cafferty is from Rhode Island
Bleb Han I stand corrected. Up until now, I thought the Cowsills were the only band from Rhode Island.
love the saxophone in this
Man, I miss saxophone in pop music!
Im here cause of Ping Pong Summer!
Eddy and the Cruisers!!! Hoooaaahhh!!!
Jersey Shore baby.
I remember this band from my youth, growing up in the 80s. Took some memory jogging, though. I had to hear this song recently in the movie Ping Pong Summer (great little movie that's all heart, you all should check it out) and, for a second, was ashamed I'd forgotten all about John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band. But only for a second, as I soon was too awash in awesome 80s nostalgia for unhappiness or guilt...plus the song still holds up today musically and lyrically. I see someone mentioned Bruce...can definitely hear that in the lyrics. Always thought "On the Darkside" sounded like Bruce vocally, too.
Ya but these guys did NJ before Springsteen. He copied them.
If so,,, play this song
In someway or another, we ALL been there.
If something ever happened to Bruce
Vice springsteen? He's a heartbeat away from the e street band😄
Cafferty had a much better voice live than Bruce and still does. Bruce puts on a great show but vocals not his strong point.
Ain't it the truth!
Neil Rice great song !
Great song, great times. Thanks for posting, sounds as great as it did when I first heard it in 1986 on Stereo Soul 89.9
Makes me smell old car fresheners. In a good way.
This so much sounds like a Bruce Springsteen song.
I remember hearing this on my car radio in the summer of '85 while driving to my girlfriends house after work and CRANKING IT ALL THE WAY UP!
Geez, this still sounds so darn good. It was half a lifetime ago when this song got played occasionally on one of the local LA rock stations, and I haven't heard it more than a few times since. Back then, in my late 20's, i understood from the outside as best I could and was sympathetic to the message in the lyrics. But now, even though I don't want to I am living it. "There's just no words to say, it's tough to swallow your pride, each and every day." Yet this music makes me feel hopeful.
