Joel, Billy - Two Thousand Years Lyrics

In the beginning
There was the cold and the night
Prophets and angels gave us the fire and the light
Man was triumphant
Armed with the faith and the will
THat even the darkest ages couldn't kill

Too many kingdoms
Too many flags on the field
So many battles, so many wounds to be healed
Time is relentless
Only true love perseveres
It's been a long time and now I'm with you
After two thousand years

This is our moment
Here at the crossroads of time
We hope our children carry our dreams down the line
They are the vintage
What kind of life will they live?
Is this a curse or a blessing that we give?

Sometimes I wonder
Why are we so blind to fate?
Without compassion, there can be no end to hate
No end to sorrow
Caused by the same endless fears
Why can't we learn from all we've been through
After two thousand years?

There will be miracles
After the last war is won
Science and poetry rule in the new world to come
Prophets and angels
Gave us the power to see
What an amazing future there will be

And in the evening
After the fire and the light
One thing is certain: Nothing can hold back the night
Time is relentless
And as the past disappears
We're on the verge of all things new
We are two thousand years

Billy Joel is an amazing artist. I am happy to have discovered his music. He is great inspiration for me. I hope there will be an European concert in 2020 and I will be able to see him live.

It's unfortunate that this video has only been viewed 137,731 times. and only "liked" 615 times.. It really reduces the value of the message intended by the song. Do these lyrics describe our future? Or have we lost our way? :(

  12. D.... D....

I have never heard this song until I read the book. l like it

The amount of thought out into this song is simply amazing. Nothing wrong with any part of this song. So powerful and moving thank you Billy Joel

love this song. i remembered when my dad got this CD. I listened until it wouldn't play anymore.

  21. M.... W....

It may sound some kinda stuped, but what instrument is the instrumental part? It's so fricking good...

    M.... W....

It sounds like a harpsichord or maybe some kind of electronic keyboard or organ set to mimic a harpsichord.

    M.... W....

That's a good guess, I always thought it was a concertina or something, but it sounds like an electronic/midi instrument. Still love this song, dad to hear he doesn't play it anymore

    M.... W....

I think it's an Irish accordion.

  22. M.... W....

you should still sing this song Sir.

    M.... W....

Too high for him these days.

    M.... W....

@amazed66 He never even played it much: I saw on Setlist.fm that he played it only 11 times; only ONCE during the _River of Dreams_ tour! He never thought highly of the song, how ironic! :(

I heard that Billy does not sing this song live anymore because the events of September 11th disillusioned him about the song which was supposed to be optimistic about what the future would be like as they celebrated the dawn of a new century. 9/11, he said, was a "wake up call" that the world would not change as much as he thought it would.

Humans will always be violent. I hope the good will always greatly outweigh the evil.

    o.... ....

    Dont loose faith

    o.... ....

Very understandable. There was a so much hope about the future in the late 90’s .....and things have gone in such a dark direction since 9/11

    o.... ....

He never even played it much; I've done some searches on Setlist.fm, and it was only played _11 times._ *_11 times._* Once in the 1994 tour! The rest was in the Millennium Tour. He never even thought much of it. I mean, I understand that you wanna play the hits, but would it kill people to play the full album?

    o.... ....

orbison he said that on his radio show, BJ the DJ(not making it up.)

  24. C.... O....

I just rediscovered this album, I have forgotten how much I loved it.

  25. E.... L....

    great album...beginning to end..

  26. J.... ....

quite an underrated song. very powerful and emotional, a fitting end to joel's pop career.

    J.... ....

うずまきパット様 Jones actually the most underrated if you ask me

    J.... ....

Actually, he made 2 more songs all my life and Christmas in Fallujah

  27. M.... V....

Very good song! It really makes you think.

  28. J.... S....

This song is just perfect. In this dark, bad world, it gives me hope that we can better.

  29. G.... L....

I'm so lucky to hear the song like this one. Thank you.

  30. a.... ....

    and the lige.

"Only true love perseveres."  Nuh-uh, it's called a grudge.

@alysdexia Yes. People die. Emotions are the result of chemicals. Those do not die, as every person and animal has them.

    a.... ....

    @Ezra Block
Molecules are alive when they're active, then are dead when they decay.

    a.... ....

@alysdexia Well I think I'm looking at this in an entirely different fashion. I apologize.

    a.... ....

@Ezra Block Emotions are the result of chemicals? Pretty sure you had some chemicals when making this statement.

    a.... ....

@Joel McNulty Emotions aren't the result of chemical reactions inside of your body?

  31. T.... P....

I think that I've discovered the perfect Billy Joel song, then I find another. They just keep coming!

    T.... P....

    my thoughts exactly

    T.... P....

    Two Pianos exactly!

    T.... P....

Welcome to the Billy Joel admirers. That's how we all feel.

    T.... P....

This is a song so deep but at the same time not...just of balance and existance.

  32. J.... M....

    "too many kingdoms"

that line could be interpreted 2000 ways

    ;)

    J.... M....

Yeah, but King doms are just losers who aren't ready to face who they really are... So we'll give them time to accept what's really in this wonderful earth reality they created.

  33. M.... W....

I absolutely love this song. So powerful.

  34. D.... M....

    Amazing song.

  35. N.... R....

    Wonderful !

  36. F.... M....

Music and songs are just not written like this anymore

    F.... M....

You got that right. Basically, it is really sad and hard to believe that Billy Joel has stopped recording new studio albums after the River Of Dreams was released in 1993. This song "Two Thousand Years" is one of those songs that Billy does not play live at his concerts anymore. I once heard from somewhere that Billy Joel has stopped playing this song live after the horrific events of 9/11 disillusioned him. The song was supposed to mean a lot of things and it was supposed to be optimistic about what the future would be like as everybody celebrated the dawn of a new century as well as our new millennium back in 2000. 9/11 was horrible but it was a wake up call that the world would not change as much as Billy Joel thought it would. After 9/11 happened, it would have been great to see Billy Joel record a new studio album with new songs of original materials that reflects a lot of things about his hometown of New York and the aftermath of 9/11 attacks. Even Bruce Springsteen wrote The Rising album after 9/11 and it sure has reflected a lot of changes in our American homeland. Every time I listen to Bruce Springsteen's The Rising album, I always think to myself how come Billy Joel didn't write something like that for a new studio album. On the other hand, I understand that Billy Joel stopped writing new pop songs of original materials since 1993's River Of Dreams. However, Billy Joel released a one off studio album called Fantasies & Delusions which became his only album of classical compositions. Otherwise, I agree with you that music and songs are not written like this anymore. We gotta have hope for everything.
