Joe Walsh - Indian Summer Lyrics

I was taken by surprise by the thunder
Sit and stared out at the rain
Taken back, I was younger
In a vacant lot day
And the fall brought an Indian summer
And plenty of places to play
I can still hear 'em calling (far away)
I can hear thunder (far away)
Well the summers are hot and the winters get cold
Not a lot smarter, but another year old

Sometimes I'm still at the fishing hole
And you never needed bait where we used to go
Just a safety pin hook on a bamboo pole
Take the big ones home; let the little ones go (far away)
And I can hear thunder
Walking down the alley
And it's not as easy as it used to be
Finding time to let my mind wander
I can still hear 'em calling
Indian summer

Kicking back at Nantasket Beach during the summer of 78 watching the trains on the Giant Coaster climb the lift hill. Forty one years later and the album still sounds great~

When songs told stories and meant something. Not today's crap

  7. T.... K....

I just tried this a coupleof weeks ago such a great deep cut had to kind of tricky because originally had that 12-string guitar but capo didn't even sang a little bit of it it was fun joke the long as usual like I do when I decide to upload something..couple of clubs and flies but what a great song you never see anybody really covering this..there's a couple up there along with mine on YouTube that came out while better than mine but I haven't seen it done for quite some time

  8. T.... H....

    The gem on this album.

  9. W.... ....

Love love this song!! One of my fav’s of his!

  10. T.... K....

now that I've been revisiting this CD since I bought it roll it down the highway delivering freight across the country there is so much great stuff on here after a few repeated listening to the songs really get into it..after a long. I've really come to enjoy the instrumental theme from boat weirdos and I think second hand store is a very underrated too and also..

  11. P.... s....

This is the story of my life ..... all good

  12. A.... D....

The one song that is so simple but, so complex. I'm 13 when I hear this.

  13. G.... O....

Fabulous song, I've always thought... My mom passed away a few weeks ago, put on this CD today, cuz it was there, I was bored with the one that was in already, this song came on, I lost it... The memories it speaks of, and brings back, of youth, time spent with my mom when I was going thru the terrible teens, ... I'll try not to lose it next time I play it, but that it has that power, says alot, Joe. Thanks!

  14. D.... P....

Takes me back to a better time and place, one that'll never be forgotten until the last of my generation is gone, and that'll be a shame! These kids nowadays don't know what music really is, and that's a bigger shame. If only some things could stay the same in perpetuity.........

  15. F.... M....

Sounds like what I used to do a lot of when I was a kid, and still do when l have time, I make sure I bring plenty of beers,food,etc... Frank misssssschief....thank you.

  16. J.... G....

Summer of '78. My God, the memories are so clear! What a song to immediately bring you back to carefree youth. I was so happy to be alive at that time. The only sad part about these memories for this ol' guy is thinking about friends of that time who shared those good times and their love of this music with me, and are no longer with us.

  17. d.... ....

use to listen to this all night long on 8 track

Toes in the sand at Huntington Beach, summer of '78.

  36. G.... U....

This reminds me of hanging out at Wallace Lake in Berea, Ohio - summer of '78. Joe Walsh's voice always gets me - kinda a Bob Dylan for the NE Ohio gang! Also reminds me of Kent, Ohio - where Joe spent some time.

    G.... U....

I grew up not far from Wallace lake Right off Rocky River Drive (Rt.237)! By Hopkins Airport😊, very cool place in the Cleveland Metroparks!💯😊

  60. r.... ....

(  yv wi ya hi go ge yi  )  = indian summer

  61. B.... H....

Safety pin hook on a bamboo pole.

    B.... H....

Love that line... reminds me of Merle Haggard's song 'The Way I Am' - 'Wish I was on some blue bayou, bamboo pole stuck in the sand...." takes me back to my childhood at the fishing hole.

  62. j.... ....

I am in awe of the musical talents amongst us who have the ability to combine such mesmerizing melodies and amazingly powerful lyricals so as to transport a person to a different time and place... "far away!"

  63. b.... ....

Many thanks to Joe Walsh and Joe Vitale, this brings back fond memories and some tears to my eyes.

    b.... ....

Don't know about the fond memories, but the tears still rain. Bless all of you, . . . & Joe.

    b.... ....

    Ain't that the truth...

  64. R.... L....

Joe had always Éagles'on  his albums. But  his drummer was Joe Vitale, thight as a knott .Joe should leave those 'birds', he's much better on his own.. ( i think)

  65. K.... G....

    Let the little ones go!!!!!

  66. s.... c....

Did he have any help as far as backup vocals from the Eagles? The Eagles sounded more like Joe to me.

  67. F.... ....

Definitely a West Coast vibe. One of many AOR songs that sticks in my head.

    F.... ....

For me, it's a Lake Erie vibe....

  68. R.... R....

    Own it Love it!

  69. H.... M....

Excellent album start to finish, tho the big hit "Life's Been Good" was the one  I felt didn't actually fit with the album's theme.  Still great anyway.

    H.... M....

    I agree!

  70. G.... M....

Bought this album as a 15-year-old because I loved Life's Been Good, but after repeated listens found myself gravitating to Side Two more often, and this song in particular...listening to it in the dark...imagining being at the fishing hole with the safety pin hook and a bamboo pole.  Love the music...and the lyrics.

    G.... M....

This, along with the other unknown songs are awesome. I went thru about the same thing as you describe.

    G.... M....

This album is awesome. Never get sick of it.

  71. W.... F....

For my father and my Barbra Rose (both in Heaven). Memories and a love that will never die. A million thanks, Joe Walsh and Joe Vitale.

  72. W.... F....

Thanks, Joe W. and Joe Vitale (percussion). You can go home again with this one.

  73. l.... ....

My first album as a kid and I bought many more after this but nothing comes close....like it was yesterday

  74. x.... m....

days of the week stone temple pilots same riff guitar

  75. B.... M....

I absolutely agree. The Doors were a big part of my soundtrack to life in LA in the 60s and especially the 70s after JM passed. I saw Ray Manzerek at the Whiskey A Go Go in '73. It was very sullen because of JM and now even more so with Ray's recent passing.

  76. d.... ....

Harvey: I would say MOST of Joe Walsh's tunes are like that -- I think the "obscure" ones are generally far better than the popular radio hits. His albums are just superb all around, no question. It's not hard to see why Pete Townshend, brilliant songwriter that he is himself, has always held Joe in such high regard. In terms of musicianship and creativity, they are absolutely peers and rivals.

  77. M.... M....

have to love this song.......takes you back.....childhood...safe beautiful time of life..relate

  78. B.... M....

Amen Brother. My best friend passed away from a drowning accident at 22 right when this came out. It makes me hurt as well. This whole album does me in.

  79. J.... M....

This song is so beautiful that it actually hurts to listen to it, because it makes me long for my childhood.

  80. J.... F....

i might be 17, but ik good music. This is good music.

    J.... F....

  83. B.... C....

    Joe "Is" The Man!

  84. W.... F....

Countless thanks. I hope my lady Barbra can hear this tune from Heaven. At least my Barbra Rose is at peace -- a place where it's summer forever. Barbra was my sole reason for existing in this cosmic nut house. God knows how much I still miss her. Like I mentioned before -- I love her beyond Time. I hope to be with her very very soon. Best to you.

  85. C.... G....

I feel for you brother. My condolences. What a loving tribute to your lady.

  86. e.... ....

Bit of a chill up my spine, this song is simply melodic and beautiful.

  87. m.... ....

OMG Does this album bring back many memories. This song is classic.

  88. W.... F....

Goodbye Summer 2012. For us, Barbra Rose. I pray and hope you can hear this great tune from your mansion and rose garden in Heaven. I miss you beyond words. I love you beyond Time.

  92. W.... F....

"I can still hear them calling -- far awaaaaaay" So can I, Joe. This one goes out to my Pop (Blaine) and to my Eternal True Love (Barbra Rose). I hope you two can hear this from your home in Heaven. I miss you both more than words can convey. I love you both beyond Time!

  93. j.... ....

Joe was a musical genius, awesome interweaving melodies... such amazing talent. Love it.

  94. w.... ....

A late and lost 3:30(ish) A.M. sometime in the late 80's... played this on vinyl for a good friend of mine.... but she STILL wouldn't sleep with me !

Oh well, next time I'll hire Joe to hide under the bed and play it live.

    I need a loan....

  95. W.... F....

Today, April 2, 2012, I become another year older. This tune makes me feel grateful that I am afflicted by The Peter Pan Syndrome. I might grow older, but I'll never truly grow up. This song is for the kid in all of us. Hang onto your youth for as long as you can. Go fishing with your kids or build them a treehouse (and spend time with them in it). A million thanks to Joe Walsh and company. This song will figure prominently in my book: North Coast Memoirs.

    W.... F....
