Seems like in those days, great bass players came to the fore (or maybe their treble-rich sound cut through the mix more). Bands like XTC, The Jam, The Stranglers and The Rezillos spring to mind. Graham Maby rocks.

Graham Maby is still around and still rocking. My brother plays in a project with him every December, and says he's a great guy.
