Joe Cocker - Dear Landlord Lyrics

Dear landlord
Please don't put a price on my soul
My burden is heavy
My dreams are beyond control
When that steamboat whistle blows
I'm gonna give you all I got to give
And I do hope you receive it well
Depending on the way you feel that you live.

Dear landlord
Please heed these words that I speak
I know you've suffered much
But in this you are not so unique
All of us, at times we might work too hard
To have it too fast and too much
And anyone can fill his life up
With things he can see but he just cannot touch.

Dear landlord
Please don't dismiss my case
I'm not about to argue
I'm not about to move to no other place
Now, each of us has his own special gift
And you know this was meant to be true
And if you don't underestimate me
I won't underestimate you.

This has been one of my favourite songs for years now. I love the weaving between ( I guess ) Chris Stainton's piano and Clarence White's guitar and Sneaky Pete Kleinow's pedal steel guitar, with Joe's super soulful voice layered over the top of it all. To think that Keef Richards knows something about weaving! lol Here's a very young Joe showing us just how good he was going to be, by showing us just how good he already was. As Paul McCartney said of Joe - "He was a loovely northern lad". I agree completely.

great version....also listen to janis joplin's version, excellent

I did...for once Janis has been outshined. Joe Cocker was at his peak here and his band was tight and powerful and could move it. In his prime, Joe was a top 10 UK singer ever....maybe 8.....Plant, Marriot, Stewart, McCartney, Mercury, Rodgers...ummm, top 7. lol

When I was in college, this song was my girlfriend's and my "anthem". we had a landlord who ripped us off for our security deposit. We even took the asshole to small claims court to try to get our deposit back, but he won. Some kids had broken into the apartment after we had moved out, and painted shit all over the walls. Ahhh- college days. This song brings back memories!

This was his first release, around 1968 when I was 15 barely out of childhood. Now I'm 60 & getting into adult diapers but for Joe Cocker I still get up & dance wildly around the room.

I love this song. When I was young, I didn't realize it was promoting class warfare but I love it anyway. Don't spread my wealth, spread my work ethic.
