Joanna Newsom - Sprout And The Bean Lyrics
I slept all day
I woke with distaste
And I railed
And I raved
The sprout and the bean
It is a golden ring
It is a twisted string
And you can ask the counselor
And you can ask the king
And I'll say the same thing
And it's a funny thing
Should we go outside?
Should we break some bread?
Are you interested?
And as I said
I slept as though dead
Dreaming seamless dreams
Of lead
When you go away
I am big-boned and fey
In the dust of the day
In the dirt of the day
And danger, danger drawing near them was a white coat
And danger, danger drawing near them was a broad boat
And the water, water running clear beneath a white throat
And the hollow chatter of the talking of the tadpoles
Who know the outside?
Should we go outside?
Should we break some bread?
Are you interested?

Joanna Newsom Sprout And The Bean Comments
Joanna Newsom is a goddamn ANGEL
I would love to hear TONES AND I do a version of this song
To play the gorgeous overlapping melodies she does and then sing so effortlessly on top of it, how anyone could deny her talent is beyond my level of comprehension. Easily one of the most remarkable musicians alive today.
In tears so much today... Thank you for blessing us with your love and light Joanna ❤️ came here because I was reminded of this beauty thanks to the movie My Suicide
Sounds a bit like Duffy and awesome harp player I’m jelly of Andy samberg
Lisa Simpson
This makes me sad and happy at the same time
Not a fan of her voice. She sounds like a child. She plays the harp very well though.
I’m kinda sad she almost never had more music videos like this, I know Joanna could serve us some of the best visuals we’d ever see. But this one here embodies everything her music is, and it suits her so well.
*October 2019 anyone?*
Her voice is so beautiful... I could fall asleep to it <3
The "Milk-Eyed Mender" is an allegory to God.
Creepy but great
TALENTED WISH I CAN PLAY A HARP BEAUTIFUL MUSIC
If you KNX you KNX...
I slept all day
I woke with distaste
And I railed
And I raved
That the difference between
The sprout and the bean
It is a golden ring
It is a twisted string
You can ask the counselor;
And you can ask the king;
And they'll say the same thing;
And it's a funny thing:
Should we go outside?

Should we break some bread?

Should we go outside?
Do you know that side?
Should we go outside?
I think she is putting a spell on me
This song makes me want to play harp
I always come back to this
This Woman with Eyes
Make a Man speech less
Wanted to Compliment

Perfect moment

Saw her play this live just recently!
So much love for this song and artist
Sproot en teh broon
I have this downloaded.
Angel!!
Why isn't this on Spotify? :(
I wish this was on Spotify 😭
She and her harps are such partners. A perfect duet in every song.
I love this song ❤
Extremely interesting in many ways.
276 people woke with distaste.
What a bizzare young lady. Bizzare, yet very appealing.
This is one of my favorite places. Where this song sends your mind just brings peace and fantasy
Whats Your Story about Hip Hop
I love how we're all pretending in the comments that she doesn't have the worst singing voice in human history.
Originality is rare, but she has it clubs
This was the first Joanna Newsom song I'd ever heard. Thanks to Cassie Ainsworth's (Skins UK) Myspace page <3
I remember I kept listening to this song a year ago when I was getting evicted

Heard this song on 120 minutes, an afternight program on Mtv that aired really good lesser known songs. It is truly a blessing to come across with such beauty ! Love from Perú.
Because you were home
Some things last a long time
👏👏👏👏
Harp playing very pretty, but her singing is not my thing, it's like listening to Ariana grande, the pitch is too annoying it hurts my ears, but listening to her harp playing I can do that for hours, singing seriously horrible.
Her voice is worse than your average goregrind grunter
the strangers
Sadly she was responsible for literally a million girls singing like twats at open mic nights.
just the greatest thing ever
I am pretty sure she is an elf.
What does she mean by saying "and I railed"?
As a verb, rail can mean to complain violently against or about something
Very Talented Joanna
I love this Song Really really Dig it #TheStrangers
Is she deaf? She sounds like a muppet with a lisp.
Why are you here?!?
“And it’s a funny thing”.
The strangers confirmed.
It sucks that this is dated at 2012, when it was actually released in 2004. What a difference it makes in understanding the essence...
Foo it was published in 2012 there was no youtube in 2004
I remember hearing this in boarders over the intercom...what an alluring story she tells...a series of stories that make your imagination wonder...Joanne is as we are truly blessed to hear her...I love all of her wonderful music!😍😄
MIND SHOT...!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
we listened to this song after having emotionally intense sex and we drifted off into oblivion
@DJ Herzog how ironic... this song is about abortion.
Strangers
the harp looks awfully complicated
Legend <3
This is a masterpiece. The music, the clip, her. Just wow
I would like this song, but her voice is difficult for me to appreciate. I'm sorry, but I prefer less harsh sounding female singers.
Personally think Miss Joanna was influenced by the Great Alice Coltrane
Oh my God. This song is perfect.
Haunting
So this is what Samberg married
This song is creepy.
Heartbreak's go-to even if it has nothing to do with heartbreak
1:43 Is Tamra home?
Joanna embodies such an esoteric all knowing presence for me and her creative force is amazing. I feel sorry for the people who will never get her work. So lovely!
spozbucket her music is creepy you could imagine this playing in like an Insidious or Conjuring movie while the demon climbs out the closet
so beautiful it makes my spine tingle
My Sister just got a Harp, song looks easy enough.
HELLO 2019 :)
The color saturation in this reminds me of the white gold/blue black dress fiasco :x
Play this at my funeral
I heard this in the strangers and thought it was some old ass 50’s record like WTF I didn’t know people even still knew how to create music Ike this, so organic
Randy Kern same here, I thought it was something like 70s soft rock. I’m so happy people still have some originality and creativity when it comes to music 😊
I went back over that movie till I figured out the hook for this. Finally found it on YouTube. This been years back. But it still has a place n my soul that will never leave.
perfeição 💕🇧🇷
sooooo original...great!
This song and video while coming up on three tabs of acid was literally one of the most beautiful experiences I've ever had. I literally wept.
Heeeeeeyyyy! Cool seeing you here!
This song is me as a little boy playing in a window sill. Discovering books for the first time. Playing with insects in summer. Climbing a tree.
Atron 3000 you could also imagine this playing in like an Insidious or Conjuring movie while the demon climbs out the closet
🌱⚘
She was 22 at the time. She was born in 1982 and this song was released in 2004. 1982+22=2004.
No she was born in 1941 idiot
Dark Crystal, right
YOU FUCKING SUCK YOURE TRASH I HATE TGIS FUCKING SHIT FUCK YOU
My ears are bleeding she has a terrible voice
Joanna just sit on this lazy susan and we'll spin you and spin you, just pretend to be playing the harp. It'll look great. :) I saw this in hackers.
this video is so charmingly weird
One of the more beautiful songs I've heard in many years. I'll be buying the album.
My dad, when i lived with him as a twenty something but didn't quite connect, used to sing along to this when I'd play it... I remember him singing along outside my closed door where he sat in his living room, as a way to try to connect with me. Makes me miss him.
Absolutely love her music!!! I was 22 I was presented with this cd and I listened to it every day at the time. Now I’m 36 laying in my bed after a long day of work followed by a shower thinking to myself “I miss that voice and music, I wonder if she’s on YouTube because my cd is long gone. Now here I am with a smile on my face writing in the comment section. Beautiful music❤️
So beautiful
