Joanna Newsom - Divers Lyrics

A diver is my love
(and I am his, if I am not deceived),
who takes one breath above, for every hour below the sea;
who gave to me a jewel
worth twice this woman's life (but would cost her less
than laying at low tide,
to see her true love phosphoresce).

And in an infinite regress:
Tell me, why is the pain of birth
lighter borne than the pain of death?
I ain't saying that I loved you first,
but I loved you best.

I know we must abide
each by the rules that bind us here:
the divers, and the sailors, and the women on the pier.
But how do you choose your form?
How do you choose your name? How do you choose your life?
How do you choose the time you must exhale,
and kick, and rise?

And in an infinite capsize:
Like a bull tearing down the coast,
double hulls bearing double masts–
I don't know if you loved me most, but you loved me last.

Recall the word you gave:
to count your way across the depths of this arid world,
where you would yoke the waves,
and lay a bed of shining pearls!
I dream it every night:
the ringing of the pail,
the motes of sand dislodged,
the shucking, quick and bright;
the twinned and cast-off shell reveal a single heart of white.

And in an infinite backslide:
Ancient border, sink past the West,
like a sword at the bearer's fall.
I can't claim that I knew you best,
but did you know me at all?

A woman is alive!
A woman is alive;
you do not take her for a sign in nacre on a stone,
alone, unfaceted and fine.
And never will I wed.
I'll hunt the pearl of death to the bottom of my life,
and ever hold my breath,
till I may be the diver's wife.

See how the infinite divides:
and the divers are not to blame
for the rift, spanning distant shores.
You don't know my name,
but I know yours.

If I was a rapper and I heard joanna Newsom's lyrics, I would just quit. She is the best lyricist I've ever heard.

Been listening to Joanna since Milk-Eyed Mender and never thought an album would beat that but this might be her best work. The songs don't quite have the length that the songs in her previous two albums have but the diversity and eclecticism in this album is staggering and just awesome. Thanks Joanna!

listening with rain the background is soooo relaxing. The music wanders with your thoughts...I love it

Our lives come easy and our lives come hard
And we carry them like a pack of cards
Some we don't use, but we don't discard
But keep for a rainy day

Playing "Last Ninja" on the C64 in the 1980s brought me here ;) Listen to song 'divers' haha.

I am so humbled by her existence... I have listened to everything she has ever created hundreds of times, and yet, here I am. Returning to her again. I guess time truly does move in a circle.

Sociopathic Trump really loves to thank himself. I may get a kick out of it if it didn't pain me so much to hear his BS. :(

  19. M.... ....

    Best artist alive.

  20. C.... O....

Have any of you noticed how the very last word on this album "trans", and the very first "sending", make transcending, creating a thematic, lyrical and sonic infinite-circular-beginning-meets-end loop, which plays into the themes of time, cycles and transcendence at the core of this albums narrative?

    C.... O....

Céin O'Brien I love you. Thank you.

She's a goddess of poetry and music... wow.

    C.... O....

It's also the cause that they died for

  21. S.... ....

Tried to give this a listen to see if her voice has improved, but no, she's still got that irritating mewl. I have no idea what people see in her work. Her random, meandering tunes are characteristic of pompous songwriters who can't come up with a decent melody to save their life, and who try to cover up their lack of compositional ability by claiming that it's all 'art.'

    S.... ....

I have zero use for drugs and look down on morons who indulge.

    S.... ....

@SWOTBWOT Ah. I was with you until you proudly stated you're a condescending cunt. BTW, that's almost every single person on the planet.

    S.... ....

Took me a bit to get it. But now everyone else sounds like they are singing wrong.
I suspect the same thing happened when somebody put six strings on their guitar: "Are you crazy? One string is enough!"

    S.... ....

@SWOTBWOT dear lord you are a pussy

    S.... ....

This is music for people who aren't content with motherfuckers sticking a guitar in their butts for 2 months and go 'round thinking they're masters of music. Like, why would you listen to this if anything that transcends phenomena triggers your musical frills?

  22. k.... ....

This and Ys are the two greatest albums ever made

  24. A.... D....

I can’t even string together the proper words for how beautiful this album is and how grateful I am to finally be in a headspace as positive as she must’ve been when she wrote this. I truly do not feel the need to thank another human for their contributions more than Joanna.

  25. A.... W....

Deep sea banjo-toting knight in rusted armor debaucherous ethereal acid trip

  26. D.... A....

White star, white ship, Nightjar transmit trans-

  27. L.... D....

My favorite moment of the album:

    Rushing, tearing, speeding home
Bound to a wheel that is not my own
But 'round every bend, I long to see
    Temporal infidelity

    L.... D....

Definitely one of the best. The last two minutes of Goose Eggs just give me goosebumps and amazement everytime.

  28. B.... R....

I don't know what should I call her,
    Angel or goddess
Just want to listen to her songs for rest of my life

    Thank you.

  30. P.... C....

Beyond the anarchies, Joanna denounced the apparent order and the paradoxes of an insensible world. Spiritual, humorous and rebellious, this poet for once not so cursed, reveals secret impostures, explores serene enjoyments, a world of rekindled dreams !

  31. A.... C....

holy crap. leaving the city is fucking awesome. tho so far sapokanikan is my fav...

  32. C.... P....

this has become one of my favorite albums

I always feel that I am looking into the eyes of my lord and savior when Joanna looks at the camera with tearful eyes in that scene at the end of the video for 'Sapokanikan'.

  34. D.... ....

Reminds me a little of Kate Bush's first album The Kick Inside, though Bush is more densely produced and less folkish

  35. b.... ....

I cry every time I listen to this album. It's not only just so beautiful, but so full of meaning, so many references and cross-references, the stylistic figures... Joanna is one of the most creative and intelligent songwriters I know.

  36. H.... M....

Homegirl is like a modern age Mozart or Bach, I'm so absolutely stunned by her creations, words escape me

    H.... M....

Heloisa Mourao I would describe her music as musical stories from ancient times...I feel like a character in her story experiencing adventures through a dream in her music.🙄

    H.... M....

Don’t insult her by comparing her to Mozart

    H.... M....

Sometimes it saddens me that there could be as many brilliant composers as any time last millennium right now, but we could also cherish the ones we do have

  37. c.... l....

    Divers...joy!

  38. T.... W....

I can't stand this voice. Sorry.

    T.... W....

Try Have one on me it's less zany I think

    T.... W....

    dont worry. you are forgiven.

  39. H.... S....

Goose Eggs has such vivid and relatable lyrics. Divers is some of her best work.

  40. B.... A....

    Grande album!!!! genial

  41. c.... ....

9:18 to 11:30 I don't know for sure what just happened but I think my spirit has left my body

Joanna definitely freaked out when she realized Ozymandian rhymes with Sapokanikan

  44. D.... O....

Time, As a Symptom > my life's accomplishments so far

  45. V.... ....

I've not chosen to monetize these videos personally, I've recived copyright claims on all 3 of my album uploads (completely legit since they own the music) by Drag city. And they are the ones who have added ads to the videos. So all the add revenue goes directly to the licensing company in this case.

    V.... ....

Yeah, but I mean it’s not like YouTube is any more profitable. It’s only less practical.

    V.... ....

Having them cut tunes off is a dick move on their part though - they could at least work it out between songs!

    V.... ....

    Thanks for uploading though

    V.... ....

not sure i believe that this is a thing

    V.... ....

@Gusto Formula well my guess is that some guy uploading the videos for free seems less problematic to them than a company that routinely profits by exploiting artists

  46. h.... ....

take the ads off of this. you don't own the music. it ruins the experience. thanks

    h.... ....

The person who uploaded it didn't put the ads on, it was the company that owns the music. If you don't have a copyright to the music then you don't get to choose if your videos have ads on them or not unfortunately

  47. A.... D....

I don't want to offense anybody, but I would like to have your thoughts on my impression of Joanna Newsom :

1st impression : Wow! This is the best thing I've heard in years (I'm a fan of Sigur Rós, Kate Bush, Björk, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Talk Talk... and I always search the web for new musical discoveries, but keep being disappointed.)

2nd impression : listening to her more... I would like her to sing just a bit less... let more silence in her music... I feel she wants to get away from verses-chorus pattern... but I see a clear pattern in most of her songs, which is : sing, sing, sing, sing, gorgeous instrumental ending!

What do you think?... please, don't nail me on a cross for this!

I still believe her music is great and she seems to have a beautiful personnality too! Not to mention her beauty and her modesty!

    A.... D....

can we still nail you on the cross?

    A.... D....

Actually I see a different pattern on several songs, especially the titular song « Diver », « A Pin Light Bent » and « Time, as a Symptom ». It’s more like: gorgeous instrumental, followed by sing, sing, sing.

    A.... D....

Try this, get lyric sheets for the whole album and read the lyrics while you listen from beginning to end...then repeat this about a hundred times or so...should help resolve your issue.

    A.... D....

IF YOU LOVE SIMPLE MODESTY, HEAR the singer Vashti.

    A.... D....

FOR SIMPLE MODESTY TRY CASH TO BUNYAN.

  48. M.... D....

    Remarkable, I'm speechless.

call me selfish but I prefer that those 3,842,240,567 listen to something else. This is a true gem :)

  53. R.... P....

I missed you Joanna. No one writes songs like you

  56. W.... N....

3:18 through 4:47 is the greatest sound I've ever heard.

    W.... N....

Will Neill nice profile pic my dude, love me some OTC

  57. E.... ....

What the fuck is going on? Did I just ascend?

  58. w.... ....

The title track to this album took my actual breath away.

I know I might be in the minority but I think this ranks above "milk eyed mender" and even "Ys". "Have one on me" is still my favorite but this album is seriously incredible.

    w.... ....

That's exactly where it should be ranked

    w.... ....

    I wept.

    w.... ....

We are talking about four releases which veer from the very good to the mind blowing. To my mind Ys is her masterpiece and one of the greatest albums of the last 20 years. While I liked the Milk-Eyed Mender on release it is one of those debuts which was then utterly surpassed in scope, ambition and realisation by its successor. I love "Have one on me" but was rather underwhelmed by "Divers" initially. More fool me.

    w.... ....

Agreed! Have One On Me was one of the most transformative and unique albums I've ever heard. Milk-Eyed Mender and Ys are also very unique, but HOOM is so powerful.

  59. C.... O....

Greatest album of all time, just sayin'!

    C.... O....

    Céin O'Brien Easily.

  60. j.... ....

Seriously, if you dislike this you are lost for music and I have nothing left for you.

    j.... ....

someone on a bad day, joanna's nemesis, parkinson, flat earthers... the list goes on.

and dont sell yourself short. you always have something.

  61. L.... Y....

This album is incredible! Having been a fan from the first time I heard Joanna's voice on Milk-Eyed Mender, I'm delighted to hear her growth and refinement of the creation process. I read in an interview that they spent 4 years recording this album and 4 months mixing it. It shows! This is the most cohesive sounding album she's released, in my opinion. Inspiring and otherworldly! Thank you:) I'm gonna go buy this beautiful album now❤️

  62. s.... i....

thank you for post the album

  66. P.... F....

Joanna, your previous albums felt much more personal. And I loved the combination of your harp and your voice and your lyrics. This is still good stuff, I just prefer the old stuff.

    P.... F....

Pedro Felis I'll let her know

    P.... F....

perhaps all those combinations are still there and your music taste just moved on to other things?

  67. l.... ....

Ever so slightly Kate Bush I'm thinking.

    l.... ....

    Sigh.........................

    l.... ....

    The Kick Inside

    l.... ....

Not so slight I'm afraid. Really rips off tons of things from Kate. But I'm still not complaining because I still want to hear it.

    l.... ....

Kate Bush minus the David Bowie

    l.... ....

@XxDanSoloxX This good? She does. But they have a different sound than this, OBVIOUSLY. She has aged and is a different person than Joanna.

  68. s.... o....

joanna is going to be in my all time favourites . she is amongst good company on my music list

  69. C.... M....

"Pin Light Bent"...could be her best song.

    C.... M....

Only skin from YS is the most beautiful piece of music I have ever heard

    C.... M....

Yes, Talk about Kate Bush sound.

    C.... M....

Kate Bush has nothing on Joanna Newsom. The songs on « Have One on Me » alone trump Bush’s entire discography. Let’s not talk about Joanna’s lyrical prowess. Bush doesn’t even come anywhere close to Joanna’s talent. Hate it when people lump them together. Bush hasn’t been relevant for years

    C.... M....

    @008Invisibleman Um..... No.

  75. F.... A....

Has a Regina Spektor/Lena Lovichish (say "Lovichish" fast five times and then get a backbone 'cause man you'll do anything someone says, what a pushover!)---has an off kilter kinda weirdness that always grabs my gonads. These are the girls no one warned you about, 'cause like angels and demons they just appear, like Mona Demarkov.

    F.... A....

You mean Lena Lovich?  Early 80's, kooky, "New Toy", "Lucky Number" Lena Lovich?  love her!

    F.... A....

The poseurs be plentiful, but the truly quirky are rare, and the super-talented, super-quirky rarer than a rational thought in Die Trumpet's cranium. These ones be treasures without measure, and maybe the only reason not to don that full metal jacket.

    F.... A....

I too will engage in this dialogue of Who Is Quirkier

  76. I.... T....

I don't know if this album tops Ys or Have One On Me but it is still perfection! Haha, Anecdotes, Sapokanikan and Time, As A Symptom are my favorites.

I never gave your music a serious listen when I was younger, and I regret it so much after the past couple of months digging into your discography. I feel like Have One on Me is changing my personal writing and I’m just so so into everything and thank you so much. I wanted to write you a letter or something, but here’s this YouTube comment.
