Joan Baez - Who Murdered The Minutes Lyrics
Who murdered the minutes
The bright, golden minutes
The minutes of youth?
I, said the soldier, dressed in his red coat
I murdered the minutes
I took the minutes and what good I did
For see how the black men kneel, he said
Who killed the hours
The gay purple hours
The hours of faith?
I, said the parson, in his black cloak
I with my book and my bell and my pen
I killed the hours
As my holy right
And see how the people kneel at night
Who slew the years
The sweet precious years
The years of truth?
I, said the lover, in her gay gown
I with my lips, and my breasts and my eyes
I slew the years
I slew the years
My silly talk
And see how you kneel to me in love

Joan Baez Who Murdered The Minutes Comments
'Baptism' is an enchanting album ; and it's great to be reminded what a talented poet Henry Treece was.
manthasagittarius1, I believe "Noel" was done with Schickele. Not sure about what other one might be..
YOU ARE RIGHT, JOAN CHOSE POEMS OF MANY DIFFERENT MOODS AND SUBJECT MATTERS. YOU ARE ALSO RIGHT ABOUT, “MAGIC WOOD” BY HENRY TREECE, IT IS SO MYSTICALLY CHARMING AND HAUNTING, BUT SHE ALSO DID TWO OTHER “TREECE” POEMS IN “BAPTISM”. “OH LITTLE CHILD” AND ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAV JOAN SONGS, “OLD WELSH SONG”. I DIDN’T REALIZE THAT WHEN THEY REISSUED, “BAPTIZISM”, “NOEL” & “JOAN”, THAT THEY INCLUDED SOME MATERIAL NOT ORIGINALLY RELEASED. I WOULD NEVER HAD KNOWN THIS IF IT WASN’T FOR YOU
I ACTUALLY THOUGHT PETER SCHICKELE, AT THAT TIME, WAS TWO DIFFERENT PEOPLE. THE SATIRIC CLASSICAL COMPOSER AND THE SERIOUS CLASSICAL ARRANGER OF THE THREE JOAN ALBUMS AND OTHER NOTED CLASSICAL CONDUCTING EFFORTS. I FOUND A YOUNG LADY TODAY ON YT WHO HAS POSTED SEVERAL OF HER OWN VIDEOS, MANY EARLY JOAN BAEZ RECORDINGS. IF YOU GET A CHANCE AND CAN FIND THEM-“Lindschaldwell”, “LOCH LOMAN”, “MAGIC WOOD”, “OLD WELSH SONG” AND OTHERS…MAYBE YOU CAN TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK
How strange . . . I knew about them, though I didn't own them. I was into some other music at that time. I don't think I realized they were Schickele's arrangements, which is weird because I knew his PDQ Bach stuff very well. But when Baptism came out, that was different. It was amazing.
THREE JOANIE ALBUMS ORCHESTRATRATED, ARRANGED AND CONDUCTED BY PETER:
1) “NOEL” – 1966. 2) “JOAN” – 1967. 3) “BAPTISM” – 1968.
I) “NOEL” – 1966: 1. "O come, O come, Emmanuel". 2. "Coventry Carol" 3. "Good King Wenceslas". 4. "The Little Drummer Boy". 5. "I Wonder As I Wander". 6. "Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella" 7. "Down in Yon Forrest". 8. "The Carol of the Birds". 9. "Angels We Have Heard on High". 10. "Ave Maria". 11. "Mary's Wandering". 12."Deck the Halls". 13. "Away in a Manger". 14. "Adeste Fideles. 15. "Cantique de Noël. 16. "What Child Is This". 17."Silent Night".
(II) “JOAN” – 1967: 1. "Be Not Too Hard". 2. "Eleanor Rigby". 3. "Turquoise". 4. "La Colombe". 5. "The Dangling Conversation". 6. "The Lady Came from Baltimore". 7. "North". 8. "Children of Darkness". 9. "The Greenwood Side". 10. "If You Were a Carpenter". 11. "Annabel Lee". 12. "Saigon Bride".
What other two albums with Schickele? I thought this was the only one. The reception in its time was so uneven, but I thought it was brilliant. Such a strange, wonderful selection of verse! The other piece with Henry Treece's poetry ("The wood is full of shining eyes") is incredible.
@Baez971 BAPTISM IS HOLY. SO WAS HER OTHER TWO ALBUMS WITH PETER
Very somber but beautiful music
I have this album in a closet. It's not her best, but it contains a lot of truth - this song, especially.
I had this album, still have the cover, but sadly not the vinyl. It was and still is one of my favorites! Thank you for this posting. You have helped me recover a lost treasure...
Oh I do love this song taken from her very original album Baptism, which is for me one of her best album! Thnk you for posting! And this song means so much for me nowadays! Thanks!
