Joan Baez - The Lady Came From Baltimore Lyrics

The lady came from Baltimore
All she wore was lace
She didn't know that I was poor
She never saw my face

I was sent to steal her money
Take her rings and run
But I fell in love with the lady
Came away with none

The lady's name was Suzanne Moore
Her daddy read her law
She didn't know that I was poor
Livin' outside the law

I was sent to steal her money
Take her rings and run
But I fell in love with the lady
Came away with none

Her daddy said I was a thief
And didn't have her love [?]
But I [?] was Suzanne's true belief
I married her for love [?]

I was sent to steal her money
Take her rings and run
But I fell in love with the lady
Came away with none

The way she lived in?
To keep the robbers out
She never stop to think it all
That's what I'm about

I was sent to steal her money
Take her rings and run
But I fell in love with the lady
Came away with none

It is a man's song. She covered like paint . No coats against her love er Bob?

Terrible version. The original by Tim Hardin is where you want to be. This is absolutely horrible. No feeling but an awful attempt at turned a heartfelt song into a pretty ditty. Oh and that awful warbling !!

Preciosa canción de Tim Hardin, con la inigualable voz de la Baez, gracias

  4. M.... S....

The arrangement sounds like it's fighting the song....bad work really, not a patch on Tim.

  5. K.... ....

My favorite version of the song <3 I love Baez

Next after Joan´s wonderful voice is the incredible nice woodwinds´ arrangement. So wonderful written for them!

    🎆👏👏👏

I have always love this song and especially covered by Joan Baez... as it shows the power of conditional love. T. Harden writes some good tunes.

Heard it first by Johnny cash. I have this vinyl l.p. of Joan... most marvelous. Farewell mywistful Saigon bride.

charming - but I am mistaken, I thought the lady's name was Susan, not Suzanne - the latter wasn't as common back then. BTW, the name (either one of them) translates to "lily". But back to Joan - one of the greatest women of our time, in more than one way - not just her singing.

    J.... W....

Joanie always takes liberties with lyrics. Tim Hardin wrote about Susan Moore.

Joan Baez has one of the great voices (I have everything on Vanguard, but she doesn't do justice to this song.  Sorry Joan, but no way.

    b.... ....

Bland and middle of the road, this version removes all the passion and power from Tim Hardin's original version. The orchestration is irritating and totally disconnects the melody from the lyric! No, no!

I love how the line "The way she lived and had a wall" sounds like "The way she lived in Hanawa" and has me thinking Baltimore has a suburb called Hanawa that's rather safe and protected. So... she learned something about singing lyrics the Bob Dylan way. Ha ha ha ha. I love Joan Baez.

Joan did a $2 concert in Chicago, late 70s I think. Great show.  During the show she said she had been shopping at Saks. I guess that surprised the audience as Saks wasn't quite a folky hippesque store. After a few years as our political beliefs parted ways I fell into calling her 'Phoney Joni' like others did.
Anyway years have passed. I still remember how much I loved her music back then. I realized that different people are probably born to their politics even more than they are born to their religion. I also see that one or 2 sound bites don't describe politics very well.
I really don't know what she thinks or believes and by now I don't care. I can just listen to the old songs and remember those days. She was a force of her own, strong voice and personality.
and Hardin was a great writer too...Reason to Believe....anyone

@xkguy One thing I have never done is let a person's politics get in the way of appreciating their music. In addition no political view is infallible so we must keep an open mind and realize that while certain aspects of a political view may be bad in our eyes other aspects may have merit. Personally I have no single political bias but pick and choose the best of all of them to formulate my own opinions.

"Phony Joni". Of all things to accuse her of... Hate her politics, fine, but doubt her sincerity? That's loony.

Yes, Tim Harden was a great songwriter, from Oregon where I live.

--And the most wonderful arrangement (woodwinds) and also the fluently played electric bass. On top of all Joan´s golden voice. A long time ago we got a translation in swedish and played it in our group.

  15. r.... ....

I saw Tim sing this song back in 1970.  Wished he would have lived longer and made more beautiful songs.  Tim Harden R.I.P.

    r.... ....

    I saw him twice too....one at Woodstock...such a talent...a favorite of mine.

    r.... ....

@Mary Lynn Johnson-Kerker That Woodstock performance is the best I have heard from Tim, both 'Misty Roses' and 'If I were a Carpenter'. Cant find the whole set so your one of the lucky ones that actually has heard it entirely and you were there haha that's crazy!

+CHANCHOFACE  young and crazy...now I am just old and crazy...

  16. G.... C....

Very nice version of the  Tim Harden song

  17. P.... T....

The original version by the composer himself (Tim Hardin) is a masterpiece. You'll find it here on You Tube as well.
