Joan Baez - The Dangling Conversation Lyrics

It's a still life water color,
Of a now late afternoon,
As the sun shines through the curtained lace
And shadows wash the room.
And we sit and drink our coffee
Couched in our indifference,
Like shells upon the shore
You can hear the ocean roar
In the dangling conversation
And the superficial sighs,
The borders of our alliance.

And you read your Emily Dickinson,
And I my Robert Frost,
And we note our place with bookmarkers
That measure what we've lost.
Like a poem poorly written
We are verses out of rhythm,
Couplets out of rhyme,
In syncopated time
And the dangled conversation
And the superficial sighs,
Are the borders of our alliance.

Yes, we speak of things that matter,
With words that must be said,
"Can analysis be worthwhile?"
"Is the theater really dead?"
And how the room is softly faded
And I only kiss your shadow,
I cannot feel your hand,
You're a stranger now unto me
Lost in the dangling conversation.
And the superficial sighs,
In the borders of our alliance.

    It's a still life watercolor
    Of a now-late afternoon
As the sun shines through the curtained lace
    And shadows wash the room

And we sit and drink our coffee
Couched in our indifference, like shells upon the shore
You can hear the ocean roar

    In the dangling conversation
    And the superficial sighs
    The borders of our lives

And you read your Emily Dickinson
    And I my Robert Frost
And we note our place with book markers
    That measure what we've lost

    Like a poem poorly written
We are verses out of rhythm
    Couplets out of rhyme
    In syncopated time

    And the dangled conversation
    And the superficial sighs
Are the borders of our lives

Yes, we speak of things that matter
With words that must be said
    "Can analysis be worthwhile?"
    "Is the church really dead?"

And how the room is softly faded
And I only kiss your shadow, I cannot feel your hand
You're a stranger now unto me

    Lost in the dangling conversation
    And the superficial sighs
In the borders of our lives

Wonder why she changed the lyric from "is the theatre really dead?" to "Is the church really dead?"

I grew up in the 60s, enjoyed the great music from that era, including Joan's. I always found her very attractive too.

Re: comment by Gloiven Anderon - I can't find a reference anywhere on the net to a version on this song by Cat Stevens. Are you sure about this, as it doesn't appear to be on any of his albums or as a live version on YT .

Wonder if she related to this because of her thing with Dylan.

It's good, but too happy. It loses S&G original intent, I think.

There's no disputing that Baez has a great voice, and sings this song very well. But, what I think ruined this cover was that the accompaniment was upbeat and didn't match the serious tone of the lyrics. The Simon and Garfunkel version of this song does a very good job of using a somber guitar to set the mood. Also, her decision to change the lyrics from Paul Simon's original version was creative but didn't add anything to the song as a whole.
