Joan Baez - The Cherry Tree Carol Lyrics

When Joseph was an old man, an old man was he
He married Virgin Mary, the Queen of Galilee
He married Virgin Mary, the Queen of Galilee

Joseph and Mary walked through an orchard green
There were cherries and berries, as thick as might be seen
There were cherries and berries, as thick as might be seen

Mary said to Joseph, so meek and so mild:
Joseph, gather me some cherries, for I am with child
Joseph, gather me some cherries, for I am with child

Then Joseph flew in anger, in anger flew he
Let the father of the baby gather cherries for thee!
Let the father of the baby gather cherries for thee!

Then up spoke baby Jesus, from in Mary's womb:
Bend down the tallest branches, that my mother might have some
Bend down the tallest branches, that my mother might have some

And bend down the tallest branches, it touched Mary's hand
Cried she: Oh look thou Joseph, I have cherries by command
Oh look thou Joseph, I have cherries by command

One of my favorite Christmas songs and sung so beautifully from an album she had out in the 1960's.

The Cherry Tree Carol derives (in its infancy portion) from a story in the Infancy Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew (from chapter 20), a 7th-century pseudepigraphical work, but in the original the occasion is a pause during the flight to Egypt after Jesus' birth, rather than during Mary's pregnancy, and the original has a date-palm rather than a cherry tree.

How does Gwyneth Walker fit in all of this?

Actually there is a different history to the carol. http://www.biblicalarchaeology.org/daily/biblical-topics/post-biblical-period/the-origins-of-the-cherry-tree-carol/?mqsc=E3860904&utm_source=WhatCountsEmail&utm_medium=BHDDaily%20Newsletter&utm_campaign=E6BD05

Thank you so much for posting this and for the detailed description. I admire and adore Joan Baez (Judy Collins and Joni Mitchell, too).  This plaintive carol is unusual-- even haunting - and poignant.  It often brings me to tears as does this performance by Joan.

  18. M.... O....

i love this rendition she has such a pure voice and the theme has always interested me what must a conservative upper class older man have felt to discover his child bride already with child cos carpenters in that society were very esteemed

  19. b.... ....

Brings back childhood memories when my mom and dad played Joan's Christmas album during the holidays....loved her music then and now. She has the voice of an angel.

  21. N.... ....

I love Joan Baez, but the difinitive version of this song is by Canadian maritime singer Catherine McKinnon.

She sang with the Singalong Jubillee crowd in the late sixties. They have a Christmas album, yes vinyl ALBUM with her version. I can't upload at the moment, but when I can, you'll agree....SWEET!!!
