Joan Baez - Railroad Boy Lyrics
She went upstairs to make her bed
And not one word to her mother said.
Her mother she went upstairs too
Saying, "Daughter, oh daughter, what's troublin' you?":
"Oh mother, oh mother, I cannot tell
He courted me my life away
And now at home will no longer stay."
"There is a place in yonder town
Where my love goes and he sits him down.
And he takes that strange girl on his knee
And he tells to her what he won't tell me."
Her father he came home from work
Sayin', "Where is my daughter, she seems so hurt"
He went upstairs to give her hope
An' he found her hangin' by a rope.
And on her bosom these words he found:
"Go dig my grave both wide and deep,
Put a marble stone at my head and feet,
And on my breast, put a snow white dove
To warn the world that I died of love.

Joan Baez Railroad Boy Comments
What a sad, beautiful song. Reminds me of van Zandt
Amen to that. You get Sky Blue yet? FANTASTIC!
@marlene riggs nope, this was my artist-discovering song. I'll check it out! Plus you reminded me that I intended to learn the chords, so double thanks ^^
@marlene riggs oh I just realized Sky Blue is a van Zandt album x) but I'll check it out anyway cos I've only listened to a couple of the songs there haha
Brilliant vocal. Heartbreaking delivery.
Her voice is breathtaking~~♡
Shortest list in the world: Happy songs recorded by Joan Baez!
I was looking for this song so desperately... just got together with my brother and a few lads to form a band.
Now I find it sung by joan, which was referred to me, as a very good musician from "back then", by my dad.
Thank you for uploading.
♡
Blessings from Austria!
Somebody oughtta write a follow-up song where her parents take a shotgun to the bastard!
Nice Nazareth cover
Glad I heard this one. Thanks for sharing.
Ron
She has a nice voice but I'm glad this old timey high pitch type of singing went out of style
I disagree so much
love, light and peace shall be in the whole world

Joli partage !
J'ai encore ce "disque noir"... J'adore!
The Magnetic Fields' 'Railroad Boy' is sixty quadrillion times better.
you're wrong, was Joan Baez has a beautiful voice, wonderfully singing this song.
Supper !!
Isn't that the diamond best of vanguard years box sets cover?
Where did you get it, I couldn't find it on the internet or somewhere else.
I've no idea, but she drove me crazy with all that howling. Boom, boom!
"Warbling" would be a better word for Joan Baez's voice on this recording of "Railroad Boy." That said, there is a good duet version of the song with Baez and Bob Dylan, in Dylan's 1976 NBC television special "Hard Rain," filmed in Fort Collins, Colorado..
And you just haven't lived until you've heard Baez strip away all the soul from Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil's "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" (popularized by The Righteous Brothers' fantastic recording of the tune, produced by Phil Spector). Or, more simply put, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" is not meant to be sung by a soprano.
Σαν να τραγουδούν άγγελοι...

Magnificent!! Simple words - tragic story - perfect voice -amazing guitar skills, and so young... I love her, can you tell?...
For the French and the nostalgic, the melody was used for a nice song of Marie Laforêt 'Tu fais semblant' /watch?v=YyDLVzpxtsU
