Joan Baez - Jesse Lyrics
Jesse come home, there's a hole in the bed
Where we slept; now it's growing cold.
Jesse your face, in the place where we lay
By the hearth, all apart, it hangs on my heart
No I'm not scared; I wait for you
Hey Jesse, it's lonely, come home.
Jesse the stairs in the halls, recalling
Your step; and I remember too.
All the pictures are shaded and fading in grey
And I still set a place on the table at noon
And I'm leaving the light on the stairs
No I'm not scared; I wait for you
Jesse the spread on the bed,
It's like when you left, I kept it for you.
All the blues and the greens have been recently cleaned
And are seemingly new; hey Jess, me and you.
We'll swallow the light on the stairs
I'll fix up my hair, we'll sleep unawares
Hey Jesse, it's lonely, come home

Joan Baez is an amazing singer. I saw her, sitting on the floor at the University of Maryland. Jesse, come home is one of my favorites along with so many other songs she recorded.
Such a beautiful rendition of JESSE! When DIAMONDS and RUST was first released, I played this track over and over...My oral surgeon is named Jesse, today I asked if he was familiar with Joan Baez singing JESSE--he wasn't... I suggested he listen to it=hope he enjoys as much as I do.
Check out for Maria Daines version...my favourite. Though i love miss Baez voice since...ever.
Thank you! I only heard this song once and I've been searching for ages.
check out Shirley Bassey's version too
tempo too fast from original Janis Ian
POR SIEMPRE QUE MUJER /FOR EVR WHAT WOMEN
thank you! greetings from Ukraine))
My mom's favorite song....I LOVE YOU MOM.
❤❤❤
I love this song, and I have loved Joan Baez since I first heard her in 1963.
Personally, this song came out at the same time my first wife told me... "I've fallen out of love with you, and I'm leaving." It has a very poignant message to me. I still feel that loss thru this song as well as the "Diamonds and Rust" song. I've moved on and remarried a very special lady but this brings back memories. Thanx for putting this together Dan.
It reminds me of a magical weekend and is long. He was the love my life and I miss him.
This (Diamonds and rust) is one of the best album ever. All songs are gems.
over the years I have heard many times , often from very reliable sources , that Janis Ian wrote this song on behalf of a friend who lost her boyfriend in the Vietnam War
so sad, so sweet
Not a big fan of Joan Baez. Never was. I've heard Janis Ian's version, which is excellent. I've heard Roberta Flack's which is beautiful. Joan Baez quite frankly, blows them out of the water with a timeless perfection. No one sings it better. No one.
This is one of the great Joan Baez's songs that touch the heart. Ken
I love Janis Ian's lyrics, but I love Ms. Baez's version soooo much!
best song ever!
"Jesse"
Jesse come home, there's a hole in the bed

Hey Jesse, it's lonely, come home.

+jake b Yes, of Course!
Ms Baez is Ambulatory Breathing and Singing soooo Beautifully
Thank You Dan. I cannot tell anyone what this song means to me. I am now 74 years old and still cry
Maggie, Crying is healing. I cry to this song and really don't know why? I can't tell you why either. I think some songs are just like that. They just touch us down deep. Down deep is where we hold all our happiness and sorrow! Life serves us both and both are worth keeping! Maggie I think you must have a beautiful heart! Keep crying Maggie, Peace and Love, Skip Green
love you Maggie
Maggie, I am 75 and I still have a Jesse to haunt me.
30+ and crying, but more when I listen to the Janis Lan version
She sounds like an anguished, romantic Angel, it's no wonder and yes the lyrics as well. Simple and to the heart.
Joan, Quinn forever...
Thank You Dan for a beautiful song and for a possibility You give to listen to Joan Baez singing!
Vic in Moscow.
This song has very personal meaning for me. I first heard it from a juke-box as the B-side of Roberta's, "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". The gut-wrenching lyrics and incredibly poignant music tore me up but yet I was so drawn to it with an undying affinity. Later, I heard Janis's version and learned she wrote it. - Of course, she did. Who else writes like her? - Then I heard Joan sing it and cried all over again. All three of these beautiful singers give it the emotion it deserves. It is truly a forever lastingly, excruciatingly, beautiful romantic ballad granted that beingness by all three. I love them.
I don't share Erik's point of view. Joan sings it beautifully and music and text are marvellous.
I'm a big Baez fan, but she didn't sing this one from the heart. If you want to hear a version of this song that will at the very least give you goose bumps and no doubt a tear or two, listen to the Roberta Flack version.
Great singer
thank you joan...your sweet voice is perfect for this song...i'm not a huge fan of covers, but your version is far better than janis ian's original or roberta flack's cover and they're both great singers.
We were listening 40 years ago approximately. And the other songs like diamonds and rust. Thank you Joan Baez. Very sensitive as usual..
HOLE IN THE BED….POETRY!
