Joan Baez - It's All Over Now, Baby Blue Lyrics

You must leave now, take what you need, you think will last.
But whatever you wish to keep, you better grab it fast.
Yonder stands your orphan with his gun,
Crying like a fire in the sun.
Look out the saints are comin' through
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

The highway is for gamblers, better use your sense.
Take what you have gathered from coincidence.
The empty-handed painter from your streets
Is drawing crazy patterns on your sheets.
This sky, too, is folding under you
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

All your seasick sailors, they are rowing home.
All your reindeer armies, are all going home.
The lover who just walked out your door
Has taken all his blankets from the floor.
The carpet, too, is moving under you
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

Leave your stepping stones behind you, something calls for you.
Forget the dead you've left, they will not follow you.
The vagabond who's rapping at your door
Is standing in the clothes that you once wore.
Strike another match, go start anew
And it's all over now, Baby Blue
Oh, it's all over now, Baby Blue.

  19. K.... P....

It's much prettier than Dylan's and he'd approve!

    K.... P....

she has made bob dylan she made him famous but she has a much beautiful Voice

    K.... P....

Its not she uses this anoying high voice its very bad.i like when she use her lower voice

  20. M.... K....

even though Joan did always do an amazing job at singing Dylan songs, and gave everything to make this world a better place, people still don't understand about understanding and respecting each other, or about the sense of life...

there's still waaay too much violence, hate and disrespecting of others on this planet.
seems like people will never change. Just look at the Ukraine, Israel and even ourselfs or the economy.
Maybe some things will change in the next decades, of my yet early point of life...
but it seems like things are turning more and more worse than good.
When will people ever understand that love is the answere...

  21. P.... L....

I don't believe Dylan could have written such words about anyone but himself ... I believe it's about a defining moment in a life, not a relationship breakdown ('the vagabond who's rapping at your door. is standing in the clothes that you once wore') ...

    P.... L....

Say what you want about Dylan, but self-introspection was never his strong quality.

It seems to be a song about heartake. In german we say "liebeskummer". Or something else that is ending.

i'm a guy and to be honest, he could have had me if he wanted to!

  24. d.... ....

Sorry, I don't! But thanks for the facts in your previous message. It's not my theory, I heard it on a radio show that stated it as a fact, but, what do they know.. Anyway, I never noticed that "go/let's start anew" thing! That's interesting. And as you said, it would be kind of nice if it was about them... Well anyway, a great song, and a great version.

  25. E.... D....

although maybe dylan's version is not about baez, maybe this version is indeed about dylan. as you said, it's a version of a song dylan wrote. it's about the ending of a relationship and maybe joan sings it about dylan because she says "let us start anew" while dylan says "go start anew." do you know who ended things officially between them? if dylan did, baez could be asking him back? who knows

  26. E.... D....

the album was released in march 1965 but according to wiki, dylan and baez's relationship fizzled out after dylan's tour of the u.k. in '65 - after bringing it all back home had been released.

but in the summer of '64, dylan and baez were staying at dylan's manager's house in woodstock, new york. during that time dylan was by his typewriter for hours, writing songs. maybe, during this time, he saw his and baez's relationship breaking down. maybe - and somehow it'd be nice if your theory is true

  27. J.... ....

    I totally agree!

  28. f.... ....

Yes, such an incredible voice! I remember being about 17 & hearing her for the first time (long ago now) & I just could not believe someone could sing like this....even to this day I am in awe. Imagine being born with a voice like this? You can study voice all you want & you can learn a lot; breath control, projection etc. but you are born with a voice that Joan Baez has. Her late sister Mimi also was a singer & very good & really talented but in a different way then Joan.

  29. a.... ....

Joan Baez at her best...forever young!

  30. d.... ....

I heard that he (Dylan) wrote this song about her (Baez) after they broke up, and that she made a cover of the song right after that, with the same lyrics. Don't know if that's true, but sounds cool.

  31. Z.... S....

    Thank U

  32. 1.... ....

I just cant get over how incredible her voice is!!!

  33. R.... W....

Better than Bob's, because she brings out the real meaning of the song.....with a woman's touch!
Bob brings out the rawness, but keeps the meaning well hidden.

    R.... W....

It's a song from Badfinger - Baby Blue

funny, I prefer it much more as much as I love Bobby's. He's great at saracasm and humor, but her twisting his stuff into tragic and sad always sticks with me longer. She exposes the PAIN inside his songs' characters (beneath the anger and wise-cracks) that he is too timid too actually express musically.
