Joan Baez - Fountain Of Sorrow Lyrics

I was looking through some photographs I found inside a drawer
I was taken by a photograph of you
There were one or two I know that you would have liked a little more
But they didn't show your spirit quite as true

You were turning 'round to see who was behind you
And I took your childish laughter by surprise
And at the moment that my camera happened to find you
There was just a trace of sorrow in your eyes

Now the things that I remember seem so distant and so small
Though it hasn't really been that long a time
What I was seeing wasn't really happening at all
Although for a while, our path did seem to climb
But when you see through love's illusions, there lies the danger
And your perfect lover just looks like a perfect fool
So you go running off in search of a perfect stranger
While the loneliness seems to spring from your life
Like a fountain from a pool

Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light
You've known that hollow sound of your own steps in flight
You've had to hide sometimes, but now you're all right
And it's good to see your smiling face tonight

Now for you and me it may not be that hard to reach our dreams
But that magic feeling never seems to last
And while the future's there for anyone to change, still you know it's seems
It would be easier sometimes to change the past
I'm just one or two years and a couple of changes behind you
In my lessons at love's pain and heartache school
Where if you feel too free and you need something to remind you
There's this loneliness springing up from your life
Like a fountain from a pool

Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light
You've known that hollow sound of your own steps in flight
You've had to hide sometimes but now you're all right
And it's good to see your smiling face tonight

Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light
You've known that hollow sound of your own steps in flight
You've had to struggle, you've had to fight
To keep understanding and compassion in sight
You could be laughing at me, you've got the right
But you go on smiling so clear and so bright

Joan knows a great song when she hears it...Late for the Sky by Jackson Browne is full of them and this one suits her very well.

This takes me back 40 years. Thanks for posting. I had several Baez albums in my 20's. Used to play many of her songs (or Dylan's, or Jackson Browne)...Diamonds and Rust I did the best.

  12. L.... R....

Thank you for posting the album version...much prefered by myself. This takes me back...and also love this story and to listen to Jackson Browne's version also. I love Joan's voice. And it was her music that filled my early life. Part of me. Thanks for touching off my memories Maxim.

When I bought this album and heard this song, I noticed the piano immediately and thought it sure sounded a lot like Jackson Brown. It should, he wrote the song and does his own version. I like hers better for some reason. More relatable....maybe.

    T.... W....

I actually prefer this version too, which is funny because I love Jackson Browne. But I agree, it does seem more relatable.

  14. M.... H....

Joan Baez introduced herself to me and my group an invited us to her Hotel in Cleveland Ohio We declined because my "Fiance" had to take his Nurses exam...he married someone

    M.... H....

of course.....why would we love this so much if we didn't feel the pain..lol

  15. M.... L....

    Thanks for presenting this...

How relevent. I sent a couple of photos to a friend from school I had not heard from in years. We never dated but did have some attraction going but my cousin got him. They didn't marry. He married somebody else and so did I. since he email me the whole high school album I asked if he could just do a couple of photos from when I was in Seebea
equipment operator school. He emailed the photo but wants to keep the original. Fine but why? Because you were beautiful like I remember you. No I was not. Keep the photo and here is the song that goes with it. I sent the Jackson Brown version but I love Joan Baez. May she stay forever young.

One or Two Years and a Couple of Changes behind Truths. Ponce de Leons, have you found the fountains that will give back to All of Us at least some of Our Youth?
No? Then turn around to see who is behind You and trace the tracks of our tears... and then, maybe You will Find Your Smiling Face... this time.

    Amazing song! Love this. <3 <3 :)

"When you see through love's illusion, there lies the danger

Aren't we all too often searching for the strange and different, when what we have is perfectly fine? And when we seek it out, and find it, that fountain springs up...

    K.... M....

    that only comes with wisdom...lol

    Excellent song.

A golden oldie from the great Jackson Browne. Sadly, no one seems capable of writing lyrics of this caliber anymore. Or if they do, that type of music gets bumped for the inferior products of today's market.

@Edie Warwick I too first knew this song from Joan's album but it was written by Jackson Browne and first released as the second single from his 1974 album, Late for the Sky. It was the longest song by Browne, and is generally assumed to have been inspired by his brief relationship with Joni Mitchell. "D&R" is one of my all-time favorites.

    N.... B....

Jackson's single best song, from his best album.

    N.... B....

Very true and well said, since "Mediocrity will always cover Mediocrity" in the market. Our society as whole has witnessed many changes in that we would now rarely be able to listen to lyrics of this caliber. I suppose one of the reasons is that many youngsters cannot spell well.

    N.... B....

+gsw88888  Inability to spell is one deficiency. Short attention span and lack of focus seem to be other symptoms, but there are also many distractions that destroy someone's ability to stay on one thing.

    N.... B....

Well, there's a reason that Jackson Browne is a legend and you've seemed to put your finger on it.  There have been exceptional lyricists I can recall in his era and before... Dylan, CSNY, Marvin Gaye, Joni Mitchell, kris Kristofferson, willie nelson, tom petty, stevie nicks, and before that there was Cole Porter, the great ira Gershwin, rogers and hart, irving berlin.  There will always be the exceptionally talented and those will endure.
